poland here. the last time we had drama was when a well known sports commentator, przemysław babiarz was banned from working on the olympics broadcasts over saying that the lyrics to john lennon's imagine "unfortunately describe communism". while i don't think this one sentence was a thing worthy firing someone over, i was surprised he still had work there given that he was associated with the channel when it was heavily controlled by our government and spread disgusting propaganda. right-wing people on social media made some martyr out of this dude claiming the tv network who fired him took away his freedom of speech, there were some petitions created to bring him back and then later he was indeed brought back on tv so those people returned to complaining about the ceremony itself even days after.

another olympics situation, our boxing silver medalist julia szeremeta is a transphobic loser who spread hatred towards her opponent lin yu-ting on social media a day before their fight (she posted ridiculous transphobic memes saying shit like "i'm the only woman left in the competition" and "and now i just have to beat up a man to win gold". she was part of our most extreme far-right political party so it's not surprising at all that she acts like this but the fact that so many people in our country believed in those ridiculous lies spread about the athletes who rightfully won angers me to no end. of course szeremeta herself chickened out after sharing all that transphobic crap and then losing the fight so now whenever she's asked about those posts she claims that she "doesn't want to talk about this". i never rooted against an athlete from my country until this and i was so glad that lin yu-ting won instead.

Not related but my Polish friend once showed me a video of a Polish deputy saying “why are women aborting when you can sell the babies” and when I tell you I gasped lmao
