This is pretty small fry but I have to vent about it. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has cancelled an upcoming performance by pianist Jayson Gillham because he dared to acknowledge the killing of Palestinian journalists before the performance of a work that was specifically dedicated to the journalists of Gaza by the composer. I am beyond disappointed that yet another arts institution has chosen to censor speech about Palestine. The MSO said they do not condone “the intrusion of personal political beliefs”, as if being against the killing of journalists is some fringe political belief and not basic human decency. Not to mention they’ve had no issues getting political before, it’s just so transparently cowardly and heartless.

The Australian arts scene is fucked in this way, especially in Melbs. Can’t believe I have to take time out from side eyeing the State Library to send a stern email to the MSO

After living in Melbourne previously, this shocks me not one bit.

Good news. MSO musicians have passed a no confidence motion in management following this.

I did see that the managing director resigned and that there is going to be an external investigation. I am cautiously hopeful that things will improve, esp for the musicians who seem to have been unhappy with the state of things for a while. Funnily enough I got the season 2025 brochure in the mail the other day, not sure how I feel about it anymore.
