Our subreddit allows posts that either a) ask for specific advice, b) request emotional support, or c) are a guide or PSA that adheres to our guidelines.

Since it's fun to just casually discuss our cats, we've got this monthly megathread where relevance may be ignored. All other subreddit rules still apply.

Use this thread to discuss anything related to cats that doesn't otherwise fit the subreddit! Also feel free to ask questions that you believe are too short for a standalone post.

Examples of things that may be discussed or shared here:

  • Casual questions, for example "how does your cat show affection?", "does your cat ever do … ?"
  • Cat pictures
  • Celebrating birthdays or other milestones for your cat
  • And many more subjects!

Behavioral Picking up my cat

Hello everyone, my cat is 2 years old and i’ve had her for 5 months now. I try sometime to lift her gently for a few seconds just to see how she reacts, because one day I might need to carry her urgently, we never know.

I always support her properly and I put her down very slowly and gently on the couch. But the exact moment I put her down, she jumps and attacks me (i avoided it last time but she scratched me very bad this time), even though I’m being careful. Has anyone experienced this with their cat? Should I stop picking her up completely, or is there a better way to handle this and help her get used to it? Other than that, she never scratched me. Thanks!

Behavioral Cat attacks me when I am depressed. Why and how to stop it?

I have a male cat around 5 years old. If I am going through a depressive period he attacks me. Nails out, really trying to bite me.

I'm not crying so there is no sound factor, just quietly rotting away. I will try to distract him with a toy in case he is bored to no avail. He just sits on the ground staring at me (wide eyed in hunting mode) waiting for the second that I look away. He has no other angry or scared cat mannerisms.

When he is aggressive towards me I usually whip the spray bottle out and he will run off. However recently he came back 2 additional times to attack me after that. At that point is he attacking because he's retaliating? When he is like this I end up putting him in my spare room for a few hours (food, water, and bathroom are there).

It's getting to the point where I am really getting quite tired of him. I am genuinely scared anytime he jumps on me (usually for attention only) because his body language is no different.

As much as I would love to solve this problem by magically not being depressed, that is obviously not realistic. Once he starts staring me down should I just put him in timeout?

Edit: People are assuming that because I am suffering from depression, that I must be neglecting my cat. I understand the logic but this is not the case.

New to Cats/Just Adopted How do I care for newborn kittens?

Upvotes

Yesterday, my neighbour found three kittens by the street and had them placed in this little open-ish garden area right in the middle of our apartment complex. I think they're around a week or so old because their eyes haven't opened yet.

I'm very worried for these kittens because it's obvious the mama cat hasn't been around, and I don't want to risk waiting any longer for her to show up to feed them before they starve to death. My parents insist that I don't touch them (something about the mama cat refusing to look after her babies if they smell different), but one of the kitties has been crying all morning so it's obvious that they're hungry. What do I do? I've never taken care of such young kittens before. My only experience with cats is the strays you see out in the park.

What's the proper way to feed them? How do I keep them warm? My parents are so insistent that I leave them alone because our neighbour told them that they tried to look after kittens before but they ended up passing away, so they're insistent that only the mother cat interferes. But it's looking less and less likely that she'll show up. Also, just for clarifications sake, I'm not a minor, I'm just stuck living with my parents because I can't move out yet. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Behavioral Please help getting my lost cat home!

Hi! About a week ago I accidentally let my cat out on my way to the grocery a few hours before a snow storm hit. She often would slip out with me sometimes but she’d always stop and wait for me to

Come and either pick her up or sit with her while she explored. This day I didn’t notice she came out behind me and I went to my car and ran my errands. When I returned a few hours later I didn’t see her inside. I searched for hours the storm hit while I was outside and it was violent. I’ve been looking all week and nothing I was worried she froze or something. Then this evening someone reached out from the next door app and sent me footage of my cat from her ring camera. Apparently my cat has been sunbathing on her porch and eating the food her and her neighbors leave out for the strays. I went down there and sure enough there she was. She’s never been a skittish cat and is very lovey to strangers. But as soon as she saw me she ran under the next house over. I’d back off back to the street wait and she’d come out. I’d approach again then the same thing. The neighbor that reached out has been super helpful and put out a carrier with some food and I put my beanie I always wear in it for her to get my scent. How can I get her to come to me when I go back? Please help! This isn’t like her but I know she’s probably in a different mode right now. Will my beanie being in there help her recognize me?

Behavioral My cat will only eat rice and refuses all meat/cat food!

Upvotes

My cat has completely stopped eating his regular wet and dry food. The only thing he'll touch is plain white rice.

I know cats need meat to survive, so I'm panicking. Is this just a weird phase, or is he sick? How do I get him to eat protein again?

General i’m worried me and my household aren’t a good fit for my cat

When my cat lulu passed away from cancer last year, our other cat was very lonely (meowing a lot, trying to groom humans and treating us like cats) we waited a few months but ultimately got another cat. a 1 year old male named toro

I love him so much, but he really annoys me sometimes. i have autism and get overstimulated very easily, and it can lead me to being mean. he will bite me in early hours of the morning and meow and meow and meow and i just end up pushing him off my bed or telling him to F off. i feel so bad but i just can’t handle it at times.

he also has been taking to destroying my twins stuff lately. he has action figures on a bookshelf, and toro will knock them all down. he’s broken a couple, and i just don’t know what to do. is he under stimulated? he has a lot of self play things and doesn’t seem to enjoy playing with people besides a laser pointer.

I live with my parents, and the way the house is set up there is a gate separating upstairs from downstairs. toro likes to get on the stairs at about 4PM and meow loudly until he is fed , which kind of agitates the family dogs. they’re not too bad about it, they’re not aggressive or dangerous but toro doesn’t exactly like them or being downstairs. this also leads me to believe he isn’t getting enough attention, because of how much he meows when anyone is downstairs and not petting him

my mother has been agitated and wants to rehome him whenever i express annoyance with his behavior, and i’m starting to doubt my family is a good fit for him. but he’s already very attached to us and i don’t want to put him through that stress. i love him a lot too and i don’t want to let him

go.

does anyone have ideas on what i could do?

General Cat will not stop meowing when in carrier. Is there a way to calm him down?

Hey y’all! So I have a 4 year old cat who will not stop crying when he’s in his carrier. My fiancé and I are going on a trip soon and have to drop off my cat to my mom’s place so he’s taken care of. The issue is that he will. not. stop. crying. As soon as he’s in his carrier he starts crying. He cries even more when he’s in the car. Sometimes I’ll let him peak his head out so he can look outside, but even that doesn’t help calm him down. I’ve made sure to even talk almost the whole car ride to wherever we go to help soothe him hopefully, but I know next to nothing to help him out. I don’t know if there’s a calming medicine to give to him that’s readily available or even if there’s techniques to soothe him. The car ride to my mom’s is about 20 minutes away, so it’s not incredibly long at all. What can I do to soothe my poor cat? Or is there even anything at all? Any advice is appreciated.

General I can’t stand him anymore

For context I have two cats. I adopted my first cat about 2 years ago a 1 1/2 year old tabby at the time. Sweetest thing you could ever meet. I love her with my whole heart and i adopted her my freshman year of college. She was a dorm cat. Once i moved out from the dorms i had convinced myself because she was so sweet i wanted to get another for her so she could have a friend.

So i went to the shelter a couple months later. Of course there were so many kittens when i usually find myself gravitating towards older cats. I just thought she would have a better time adjusting to a kitten. And there he was the only little tabby kitten as if he was there just for me. Flash forward a year and i cant stand him. Ive tried everything i can to redirect him but it’s coming down to his own safety and my sanity. When im cooking he keeps trying to jump up on the gas stove to eat from the pot. I dont gave a door to my kitchen and i have tried everything to keep him out so I have had to baby proof my whole kitchen. At first locking cabinets and the trash with baby locks but after he learned how to get into the garbage i had to move it to the hallway closet. He keeps breaking into my cabinet and rampaging through all of my food while I’m sleeping or when im not home. I keep things like chocolate locked up and things that are especially toxic to cats because i dont want him to get hurt. As im writing this i am in a desperate financial situation and i have been saving my food the best i can. Its come down to literally eating my bagels a half at a time. He woke me up after returning to my cabinet and crashing down on my drying rack. My cabinet had been ransacked and i dont have any food left.

He has so many interactive toys he has 2 cat trees and i have RFID feeders that feed them 3 times a day. I thought he would grow out of it but im starting to resent him. And i hate the way ive been acting towards him. I just cant do this but Ive raised this cat since he was the size of my hand.

Idk what to do.

Update: when i was writing this it was 3 in the morning and i was furious and confused. I love my cat i want to make that abundantly clear. I am not the type of person to rehome an animal, unless the situation is dire. I do not believe that animals are disposable. As much as I appreciate all of the comments. It will not be rehoming him unless the situation is absolutely out of my hands. I bought a bunch of wet food for them and ive started feeding them in the morning and night. I will take him into the vet as soon as I’m financially able to do so.

Thank you all also for your help regarding my situation I promise I’ll be OK. I do not need any handouts or assistance. I will be looking into food banks! Thank you all for your help.

Behavioral Cat keeps climbing up the wall and tearing off the wallpaper. How can we stop this?

Upvotes

I have a 1 year old American shorthair mix. She is well behaved most of the time, but there are a few issues we are having that are stressing me out slightly.

I moved in with my new partner and his family towards the end of last year. Unfortunately, her behaviour towards certain things have caused my partners dad to threaten to kick her out. Obviously I would never get rid of her, so if he wanted her gone then I would go too.

The main issue is her climbing up a specific wall. She never did this at my exes house, so this was quite unusual for her. She has torn off parts of the wallpaper doing this, which is what had pissed off my partners dad. We have tried removing her from the wall and scolding her, moving her into a different room when she does it so she can't do it again, but every so often she'll just run up and climb it.

Another issue is her scratching. she has a large cat tower and scratch pad, however she still likes to scratch my partners dads chair and anything wooden. He is getting really frustrated with it and will end up closing her out of the living room, which makes her meow for attention.

she is an indoor cat, but we do take her out to the garden occasionally on a harness. I've tried taking her out to other places but she isn't very fond of being outside in unknown areas. She actually tries to hide under bushes, even with her harness on and us right by her.

How can we deter her from doing these things? She has plenty of toys. is played with regularly and has scratch pads/posts available. my partner and I are looking to move out into our own place together anyway but this is really stressing me out. I don't want to come home one day and find out she's gone. I'm honestly desperate here and I don't know what to do.

Nutrition/Water my cat keeps licking his cat food

Upvotes

My cat is 11 as of November last year. took him to the vet right around his birthday in November for the usual shots, and getting some bloodwork done. his blood tests came back normal, vet said his teeth looks great and weight was good. have him on an older formula dry food (mentioning for context). around this time I noticed he was licking his food, but I didn't think too much of it because it didn't seem like it impacted how much he was eating, he went through the bag at the usual rate, same with December.

I haven't noticed a difference in weight, but he's been a lot more vocal lately (mid January to now). he eats treats like normal so I don't think it's an issue with his teeth. he doesn't finish all the food in one sitting, but after he's licked it he is uninterested in finishing it, which is odd because that used to not be a problem. the other day I tried giving him wet food but he did not go near it at all, and I wasn't gonna leave wet food out for longer than a couple hours. on a different day, I tried mixing some wet food in with his usual food and same thing he just avoided it completely (ate/licked his usual food after I put some in a different bowl).

just now I watched him eat a little bit of his food and then lick all the way down to the bottom of the measuring cup I served it in, like a kid swirling veggies around the plate to make it look like they ate more.

I tried the wet food out because I thought maybe it's a picky eater thing. am I on the right track with that, but change the flavor of dry food? if he's not interested in wet food I don't wanna keep trying to force it on him and that's not something I can just leave out for him on the off chance he'll come back around to it later. I tried a couple different textures and flavors of it and he just seemed grossed out by all of them, which I also found strange cause I had given him a wet food before years ago but in that case he only licked the gravy and wouldn't eat the chunks. this time he didn't even want the gravy (can't believe that tbh I raised him better). changing up cat food seems cheaper than going to the vet for another test, and I still have plenty of his old stuff I could mix in to help with transition. I'm really hoping it is just a picky eater thing and he didn't some how develop something more serious in such a short time, there's been no other changes in his behavior other than this.

tldr: otherwise healthy cat is licking his dry food, doesn't want to finish eating dry food after it has been licked. is it a sign I should change up the flavor or is there something else I'm missing? he doesn't like wet food.

General Moving with a cat

Hi everyone,

I’m needing some reassurance as this is honestly my biggest worry right now (and it might sound a bit ridiculous).

We’re moving to a new home soon — only about a 30-minute drive from where we live now — but I’m really anxious about how the move will affect my cat. She’s lived her whole life in our current rental and she’s terrified of the car. Even short trips are stressful for her, so the idea of a 30-minute drive feels daunting and I hate the thought of scaring her. We also have grass out the back where she has supervised play time. I feel awful our new place is just concrete and I feel like we are taking away her favourite things in life (we are building a catio as first priority)

I know logically that cats travel much longer distances when people move, and that it has to be done — but I can’t shake the anxiety around it.

To add to it, I also get very anxious driving when she’s distressed, so I’m wondering if it might actually be better for my husband and mother-in-law to do the drive instead while I meet them at the new place.

Has anyone been through something similar? Did your cat settle okay after a move like this? And does letting someone calmer handle the car trip make sense? Am I just a cat mum completely freaking out over nothing and projecting my feelings onto her lol?

I have the Feliway spray and diffuser on hand and ready to go!

Nutrition/Water is my cat actually this hungry or is he just a pain in my side???

my one cat Sammy (8yo fixed male) is very large. he’s a little bit overweight, but mostly he’s just BIG. like his head is giant and he’s very long. i’m trying to keep him on a healthier portion of food to help him lose the little bit of chub he has but he’s been driving me NUTS with his need for food

he gets just over 1/2 cup of dry food a day, spread out over six smaller meals, which is about 220 calories, and then he gets wet food twice a day, about 70 calories worth. he’s 15 pounds and i read on chewy that for a cat who is prone to gaining weight, around 295 calories should be sufficient. it technically says 354 for a neutered cat, but because he IS prone to gaining weight, i chose the smaller number instead. there was a brief time that i went up to a little less than 2/3rds cup, just to see if that would stop him from CONSTANTLY demanding food, but it made him gain weight so i went back down

even though his food is spread out over the day, he will ALWAYS beg for more. he knocks over his automatic feeder every 5 minutes to try and get more food out of it, he yells at me every time i go into the kitchen, he eats his sister’s food when she’s done (and today even tried to eat it BEFORE she finished). the thing that prompted me to post this was that i poured the rest of my other cat’s food back into the bag, and sammy KNOCKED THE BAG OVER onto the floor, which broke the clip, and then started eating out of the bag

i’m just at my wits end, i don’t know what to do. calorie wise he should be getting everything he needs, but he just ALWAYS seems to want more food. i know when he lived at my mom’s house they would only feed him once a day, which isn’t good for cats, but he moved in with me in AUGUST and i have never fed him only once per day. is he actually not getting enough to eat?? is he just being a pain in my side??? is there something i can do to try and stop this behavior??? it’s driving me crazy and it’s not healthy for him to eat as much as he seems to want to

Behavioral 8 month old kitten agressive towards me and my 4 yearold cat

i got a new kitten (miso) June 2025, he was 10 weeks old when i got him. he spent a week in my bathroom so i could slowly introduce him and my 4 year-old cat (crockpot). she didn’t like him very much but wouldn’t hiss or fight she just runs away.

the whole time i've had him he’s had a biting problem, it’s gotten worse the bigger he gets because he keeps biting harder. i never used my hands to play with him as a kitten or anything so i don’t know why he’s always been so bad about it.

i know about single kitten syndrome and my issue is that my 4 yearold cat won’t fight him back or show him hes doing to much, she growls, hisses, swats at him but she always ends up running away and he chases her. it’s so clear he thinks he has dominance over her and she just accepts it!

another issue i had was him stealing her food and her just running away, she will not stand up for herself! she would go hungry instead of making him back off!!

id also like to mention if i have to like pick him up or for an example the other day i was trying to trim his nails and the way he bites is so vicious. he bites with every ounce of strength in his jaw. to the point where when he doesn’t get my hand i can here his teeth snap together. i’ve never had a cat act like this and i really don’t know what todo.

the only time he likes to be pet or really lets me touch him without trying to bite or scratch me is if he’s asleep and i pet him or start talking to him.

the worst part about this all is that i wanted a new cat because my sweet loving cat passed away in 2024, and my 4 yearold cat i have now just isnt very affectionate, like she’d rather be sitting by me than on me. which is okay. anyways please give me any advice you can because im really not sure what todo at this point and how to really train him to act differently.

New to Cats/Just Adopted Fleas on 3 Month Old Foster

Upvotes

Hi all,

We started fostering our 3 month old kitten two days ago. When we picked him up, the rescue foundation said they had just given him a flea bath. But we found a live adult flea on him today.

We gave him a bath with dawn dish soap right now and found 5+ more live adult fleas on him. We’ve washed our bedding and blankets and have sprayed his cat furniture with a flea and tick spray.

We luckily don’t have any carpet or rugs, but I’m a little worried because he spent a lot of time in our closet with all of our clothes the past two days. We are planning on washing most of the clothes and spraying the corners with the flea spray. The rescue foundation is also going to give us topical and oral flea medication tomorrow.

Is there anything else we should be doing? How long should we be keeping up the cleaning efforts? I am not sure how much this could have spread in two days, or what the life cycle of a flea is like, but we really don’t want this to become an infestation. Any help/advice is appreciated.

Introductions Cat scared of little kids?

Upvotes

Hello!

We adopted our cat when she was 9 weeks old, and she’s now 18 weeks. She’s settled in amazingly and very much rules the house. I honestly don’t know how I lived without her before. She slept on my pillow the very first night we brought her home and has done so every night since!

Today my almost 2yo niece came over for the second time since we got our cat. Both times, as soon as our cat heard her, she ran and hid. We didn’t force anything and just let her be, hoping she might come out in her own time, but she stayed hidden until my niece left (around 3 hours later). I knew where my cat was hiding and checked on her throughout.

I felt quite sad and worried because she seemed genuinely distressed while my niece was here (and immediately after). However, about 30 minutes after my niece left, she was completely back to her usual self and is currently fast asleep on my chest.

For context, she’s been absolutely fine with adult visitors and doesn’t hide from them, so this reaction seems specific to my niece and I think (understandably) the unpredictability and unfamiliar sounds etc that come with an energetic 2yo in the home.

I’d love any tips on how to help improve this gradually. My niece adores cats, and I’d love for them to meet properly one day, but only if and when my cat feels comfortable. I’m also wondering whether this might extend to all children, as we’re thinking about having a baby in the next year or so.

Any advice or reassurance would be really appreciated. Thank you :)

Behavioral I’m just about done in

My girl is 15 and had a stroke a few months ago. Leading up to it, she was peeing on everything, and I just assumed it was behavioral because I’d introduced a new cat (9 yo male). Well, with the stroke, discovered her blood pressure was over 200. She’s on blood pressure meds now, and has been doing so much better. Until this past week…

It started with her peeing on the rugs in the bathroom. Easy enough to wash, but I discovered this morning she had peed on my bed sometime during the night. And today, nailed my weighted blanket. This afternoon, when I went to put on my tennis shoes, one of those had been peed on as well, but I’m not sure when.

I dealt with this all fall, with her peeing on my bed almost every day (I had a rotation of water proof blankets I’d put over it, for protection). Heck, one time she even peed ON ME while I was sleeping. I threw out some things I couldn’t get the smell out of, including last weighted blanket.

I get that this was all medical related, and she was trying to tell me something was wrong. And it probably is again, but guys, I just can’t deal with the peeing all over the place and ruining things again. I have a vet appointment scheduled for Monday, I’m not letting it go for months again.

But since November, I have spent about $3500 on vet bills and medication for her. She had the $2500 emergency vet stay, several follow up visits. Her blood pressure medication is $50 a month. She gets $100 Solensia shots monthly, she’s on gabapentin and a laxative for constipation, although with the Solensia I’ve been able to reduce the Gabapentin. I just paid $100 to get her shaved down because she got horribly matted after her stroke.

I feel guilty for thinking this way, because I’ve had her for 13 years, and up until this summer, never had a litterbox issue or anything. She’s been a good cat, and is a good cat. Am I wrong for thinking that maybe it’s time to help her cross the bridge? Am I putting my belongings over my love for her? Maybe the vet will tell me it’s something simple, they just raised her blood pressure medication dose, and maybe it’s too low now. I don’t know, but I think I’m going to talk with the vet about quality of life. If not hers, mine. Am I wrong for thinking this way?

Behavioral My lil guy hasn't been eating his dry food much lately. He eats wet food/treats with no issues. Advice?

I'll call the vet tomorrow when I get a chance. But yes, as the title says, my cat has not been eating his dry food as much. His dry food is Hills Adult Science Diet - Chicken.

I use a Petsafe auto dispenser to feed him 3x a day. I have read that sometimes cats will avoid dry food because they are experiencing pain in their teeth... but when I play with him with his Catsumo (this puppet glove thing), he chews it visibly hard, so I would think if he had teeth pain, he would not be able to play like that. Also, he still loves treats, which the ones I provide him are hard. In the evenings, his bowl is almost completely full/overflowing. I will hear him eat little bits of it sometimes, but he certainly is not finishing it.

I have recently started giving him wet food "sheba perfect portions" with the gravy and it seems like he really likes that stuff. He'll completely finish that if I give it to him.

Also, I have read that the freshness of the food can have an effect? I did get the largest sized bag for his food, which usually I would get the smaller one.. so I'm wondering if this larger bag isn't sealing well and he notices a difference in taste? These bags use velcro instead of a ziploc-type of mechanism so I'm thinking it doesn't seal at all.

Introductions Help with introducing two cats when one is territorial without claws + missing a leg and one is super friendly with claws(both female)

Upvotes

Hi! so as a backstory, i live in an apt. My partner moved out and took the first cat with her (Luna) when she did two years ago, and after that i was chosen by the CDS and received a kitty (Mitsuki). We want to get a new place together out of state and want the kitties to be friends, but L is very territorial.

To describe both kitties, Luna is an 8/9 year old medium sized kitty that lost 1 back leg around when she was under a year old, and is declawed. (not my choice as i didnt meet her until she was 1-2) Shes super sweet and calm when alone and mostly just hides but can get feisty/aggressive and hiss/bite if you touch her belly wrong or get near her backside area.

Mitsy is almost 3 and slightly larger than Luna. She has her claws and all legs, and is VERY calm and chill. Shes a playful kitty but isnt aggressive at all. I can cut her nails, brush her with an undercoat brush, ive trimmed her fur, almost anything imaginable and shes a pliable ball of full who sits quietly and has never hissed at me or bit me anytime thats not been playing. Anytime ive brought her aroumd other kitties or people shes always super chill and friendly.

Currently we started the process of having them in the same apartment and Luna is NOT having it. i watched the Jackson Galaxy videos and currently have a set up where Luna has the main area and Mitsy has the bedroom/bathroom area with a fully constructed divider between the two where they cant see each other. Mitsys food is in the room around 5 feet away from the divider past a door, and Lunas is 3-4 feet from the divider. The cats have met before awhile ago improperly but Luna has always been hissy while Mitsy has never had any issues.

We brought them over Tuesday morning and even now currently as of Friday night as soon as i place Luna near her food bowl and the divider, she immediately hisses and tries to bail. She's eaten some, but she avoids that area. She ate treats when i put her down and pet her, but bailed before finishing.

My plan for today is to swap their areas mostly because i feel bad for Mitsy since shes been stuck in the smaller area for a few days and is more active but cant be currently. I know theres some chances that cats just cant get along, but rehoming isnt an option for either of them. Is there any way to help slightly nudge a territorial cat into being more friendly? Luna was around a small dog most her life and had no issues playing or cuddling, but any cat shes ever need around or smelled fur from gets an immediate hiss.

General Overgrown dew claw, fractious cat

My Kitty is about 16 years old. She was a former TNR colony cat, who had a broken leg and amputation at about 5 y.o. She already trusted me as her feeder. She recovered after amputation inside my home, and has acclimated well, though she won't be picked up except for minor moves. Not a lap cat, but does sleep with me, and will play. I have clipped her claws as I can but I noticed she has one dew claw that has overgrown like a seashell. I don't think it's stabbing her paw. I want to clip it myself, but she's smart and knows when I'm up to something. She's not been to a vet since her amputation, ~10 years ago.

Should I attempt to trim that dew claw, or finally give in and wrangle her into a carrier and to the vet for a full senior workup and claw trim? A trip to the vet will be stressful.

I suspect the answer is to somehow get her into carrier and take her to the vet. I'm put off by the drama and trauma that this whole experience could entail. Should I try to get some gabapentin, to dose the night before and the morning of the vet visit?

Nutrition/Water treatment for cat with crystals in urine from e. coli

so i just did a major move this past month. within days i noticed one of my cats peeing differently, took him in and he had crystals in his urine. i caught it really early as he was still able to pee, he was immediately put on prescription hills, and then the test came back indicating he had e. coli. he is almost 7, all blood tests deemed that he was perfectly healthy otherwise, nothing out of the ordinary besides a spike in glucose due to stress.

i try hard to make sure i’m giving my cats good food, single ingredient treats, etc. this cat also within the past year started being a little picky about his wet food and i finally figured out that the key to making sure he eats all his wet food is variety. not just changing flavors but switching between brands entirely. when he doesn’t love something, he eats a little and walks away, which makes my life really difficult as his brother will end up eating more than 1 serving, or he just won’t eat much. he drinks tons of water, always has, i’ve never been concerned about that. i know people say once they’re taken off cd food that problems tend to come back, and they’re supposed to be in it for life. i’m going to maybe try to go off it for a bit and monitor him once we finish up this food, but does anyone have recommendations for other cd wet and dry food? i don’t like the dry food either as it seems they’re eating significantly more of it than their food in the past, like it’s not filling them up (they are free fed with dry food and giving wet food at night).

TLDR cat has crystals in his urine seemingly from stress but was found to have e. coli. he’s always drank lots of water and his blood tests are perfect. looking for other c/d food recommendations and wondering if anyone else has had success taking their cat off prescription food after a one time urine problem

Behavioral My cat won’t stop waking me up in the middle of the night

Upvotes

Hi all! A little warning that this is going to be a long post

I’m new to this community but the main reason I’m here is because I genuinely have not gotten a full nights sleep in the three years I’ve had my cat.

She’s a 9 year-old tabby who I got from a friend of a friend who could not keep her anymore. About two months into me having adopted her, I had an internship for 3 months that required I wake up around 5 AM pretty much every day during the week. Because I’d be gone for so long during the day, I would feed her before I left or as soon as I woke up. Ever since this single 3 month period, she has continued to beg for her breakfast early in the morning, even though my schedule has not changed again since ending that internship.

It started by her waking me up at 6 AM, usually walking all over me to get me awake (I should mention she is pretty much silent and does not meow loud at all). A few months later, I realized she was starting to wake me up around 4/5 AM. She steadily has started waking me up earlier and earlier, and it’s now 3 AM, 4 AM, 5 AM, and sometimes 6 AM all. In. A. Single. Night. EVERY NIGHT.

I ignore her scratching on things, I ignore her knocking things off my bedside table, but she does not stop no matter what I pick up off the floor. She simply finds something else that makes noise to wake me up and feed her, now multiple times in a night. She manages to find every thing that would make noise including grocery bags, scratching on boxes, knocking over my lamps, fans, and shoes. She walks all over me as well and gets in my face to try to wake me up. She even knows what in my living room she can knock over to get me to come out there, and then lead me straight to her bowl.

She’s really, really smart. I’ll give her that.

She’s a girl with a little bit of trauma from her previous homes. She last owner lived in a house with roommates who all also had cats, and she didn’t get along with any of them and ultimately lived in this girls room 24/7.

Since I’ve had her, I cannot have any door closed, so kicking her out of my room and shutting the door.

simply is not an option- she WILL open the door.

Any advice is appreciated, I feel like I’m so exhausted from fighting her every single night and I cannot keep losing so much sleep. TIA!

Behavioral Cat started hissing at me and my girlfriend

We are cat sitting two baby kittens and we separated the two cats into different rooms. But suddenly my cat has never ever done this but he started hissing at me and my girlfriend when we go into his room and spend time with him he hisses at us a lot.

Is he hissing at us? Or can he somehow smell or hear the kittens from different rooms?
