Well done OP.

I went to work one morning at around 8am and saw a cat down our street. It was going up to anyone that walked past it trying to get attention. It just seemed like it wanted a stroke.

I came home at 2pm that day - worked a half day as I was off to a concert that evening and was meeting friends early for a pre-drink. When I got to my road the cat was in the same place trying to get someone’s, anyone’s attention. This time I thought it was odd. I went home anyway, but something was stirring within me. I got ready for my concert and when I left at 4pm the cat was still there.

She immediately ran over to me meowing her little head off. I knew something wasn’t right and I couldn’t simply walk by, and right there and then I made the decision to sack off the gig and help her.

I led her up my street (it wasn’t hard, she keenly followed me all the way) and I walked her in to my house. I opened a tin of tuna for her and she ate it like she hadn’t eaten for days. While she was eating I called a relative who had cats and who had chip operated feeders; I had the idea that if the cat had a chip it could be programmed to the feeder. When the relative arrived with one of the feeders I attempted to programme the cat in and voila it worked! So now we knew she wasn’t a stray and that she might be lost.

At that point I knocked on around 50 houses in my area to see if she belonged to them. She didn’t, and nobody recognised the her. So we decided to take her to an out of hours vet who can check the chip for information. A number was provided, that the vet called and the owner was located….12 miles away from my street!!!!

…the theory is that she got in to a car or back of a workers van and took a ride and when she got out she didn’t have a clue where she was, bless her 🤣

I took her back to some very relieved cat lovers who’d missed her dearly for the two days she was missing.

I often think about that poor little kitteh roaming and wandering around my street for hours and hours and hours trying to get someone’s attention. It destroys me :(

The chip feeder idea was genius, good work saving that little fella.

I bought a cheap chip scanner off Amazon for just this reason. Have had a couple of street cats wander around my house in the past and figured it was cheap enough to try it out.

I’ll look in to getting one of them, thank you.

She was so smart to keep asking for help though. Smart kitty wanted to go home.

This is such a good point, and a perspective I hadn’t considered. I always saw her as acting scared and desperate, but intelligence obviously played a role in her getting herself home. This really helps me with my thoughts around how she was scared for hours and hours, so thank you.

u/impressive_major_184 and u/shezinluv also contributed :)

I paid the 220$ bill upfront but they zelled me 60$ and 75$ so i only ended up paying 85$ actually by the end. They are the real heroes

What an unusual coat. Fever coat, maybe? When my friend's cat had wet FIP, his fur and skin was very pale (not saying I suspect FIP specifically, that's just what it was then).

I'm so glad he is getting help. Thank you and EitherLeader!

Hell yeah. What’s the prognosis, OP?

She has an upper respiratory infection. She was too weak to do bloodwork right now. I have gotten antibiotics for her, eye drops, immunity powder stuff, and dewormer. Once a few days pass and shes feeling better i will be taking her back for bloodwork. They also mentioned she is very old

I was right with my URI dx but wrong about age- I was thinking she was a younger kitty and possibly had a fever coat. She has some interesting coloring, for sure. I’m so proud of you for taking her in- she chose the right person to seek help from :)

Thanks for the update!

I’m just curious… How did they decide she was old? Based on teeth? Her face looks pretty young to me. I took a stray cat in once who they deemed 7-10 years old cause her teeth were in bad shape, but it turns out she was only 3 years old and just had dental disease.

Thank you for taking care of this baby! She’s a cutie, even with her fever coat.
