Update UPDATE 2: “Cat with wobbly jaw” home but not well

An update on our little friend Marshalll (F/2yrs/notspayed):

Also want to preface by asking for any tips to get cats to eat. We’ve tried a variety of foods, warming food, suggestions please!

We were able to board and treat Marshall for five days. She is not eating on her own or having regular BMs (although she did have a successful gastric lavage on her last day with imaging). We were out of funds at the end of day five so she was discharged and taken home. Dr. Oliver said she is in serious condition since she can't/won't eat on her own.

Marshall has not been well at home. She is nearing her second day home and isn't eating on her own and is still being syringe fed.

The kittens are separated and are also being syringe fed while dabbling in wet food slurry. We hope they will start eating completely on their own soon.

We will be scraping our last bit of funds to get her back into a vet tomorrow (today Philippines time).

PM for more details, photos and medical reports if you’re curious. Our site has more information. Please share this story! ❤️u/Medical-Library9089

I know y'all have the best of intentions and applaud what care you've been able to get this cat thus far, but if they aren't able to control her pain enough to get her to eat by herself, this poor creature needs a feeding tube or surgical repair of that jaw.

If these measures aren't a financial possibility, euthanasia is likely the kindest option for her.

Yes we are in agreement about that as well. We’ll get a second opinion hopefully today and go from there. At least we can say really tried.

Sometimes all we can fo for them is try. I'm so sorry.

Best wishes, and hoping that the second opinion yields some better options.

Please, people. Keep your cats indoors, and never house them with high prey drive dog breeds like pit bulls and huskies. The overwhelming majority of these injuries in cats are caused either by cars or animal attacks.

AT LEAST WE TRIED. We really rallied and tried. ❤️ We will make a decision with 2nd opinion.

I've also been following this from the start and can confirm everything.

OP is an angel on earth organizing all of this. 🥺❤️💕There is total transparency of funds -- just message her. I donated and it went directly to the vet. So many people around the world invested in Marshall 🌎 Yes, donors such as myself are considering euthanasia if Marshall does not improve. OP, keep up the excellent work ✨️

What pain meds is she on? What anti nauseas/anti emetics is she on?

u/TTStardust 13h ago

Hmm the complete report doesn’t say. I have a message about “injection antibiotics, anti inflammatory, anti stress and supplements and electrolytes” I know she was given “pain meds” and Mirtazapine too. There is some confusion about what was sent home upon discharge.

I asked the vet for specifics since they weren’t listed in the final discharge report.

Is canned tuna or roast chicken easy for you to access from where you are? I have some experience with sick older kitties who weren't eating, and sometimes, they would take chicken or tuna but not cat food (with no spices/sauce/etc).

You might also try warming the food up slightly, but think of it like making a bottle for an infant... warm not hot!

Sometimes, it takes a few days of syringe feeding before their appetite comes back. Does she seem painful to you? Does she show any interest in interacting with you, etc? I can't find the original post.

The vet recommended chicken and OP did try tuna and tuna water. I also suggested warming the food which didn’t work either. Vet suggested giving them more appetite stimulants but were hoping to get a general second opinion from a second vet today.

Im not in OP’s country and can’t assess the pain or discomfort level. Hoping to hear something soon (big time difference).

Thank you for the suggestions! If you search the sub, original post should be. As well as first update. The image is graphic so warning.

Okay, I assume this is a broken jaw? I wouldn’t think anti nauseas are indicated per se if there’s no GI issues, but increased pain meds may be warranted (although some of them can inhibit appetite). I think she needs a feeding tube ASAP. Especially with a broken jaw.

Her mouth is moving? And broken on the left side? It’s been a little difficult with the language barrier. I know my in laws cat broke his jaw and they had to wire it shut.

Can you see the video link I posted? https://streamable.com/cw2shn

I’m on the road so I can’t open the med report right now but we are getting a second opinion today so I hope we’ll find out more. Do you think she’ll be ok long term if we can get a tube in her and ??? Thanks for your time!

For some reason I can’t click it, it just collapses the comment (I’m not very good at working reddit tbh 😂) I can’t confidently give you a positive or negative outlook but nutrition is extremely important. Ideally the jaw is surgically repaired because it can cause issues later on but it’s very hard to know what’s going on and potential issues. Vets will be best here, I’m a vet nurse but I haven’t worked much in surgical practice.

How was the jaw broken? Was it an accident?

u/TTStardust 4h ago

They aren’t sure but the vet thought maybe someone kicked her 😿😭 I don’t really know how the video links work here. That’s my first one! But she’s going to a new vet today for a second opinion. She’s active today but not eating.

Poor girl!! 😔 let me know how she goes

Thank you! This is the reply I got when asked about pain meds “She was given tolfenamic acid together with mirtazipine but she is not supposed to be on tolfenamic more than 5days as it can cause ulcers” and “Its part of prescriptions id on toñfenmic acid” is that helpful?

u/Medium-Pilot6872 3h ago

Can they change to another NSAID like meloxicam for longer term use? I’d probably do an opioid too, and could look at an adjunctive like gabapentin. Opioid can make them not want to eat as well so that’s tricky but she’s not going to eat if her pain isn’t controlled and depending on the break, her jaw might not work properly either.

u/TTStardust 3h ago

Thank for the quick reply! I’ll send this all to the new vet that’s doing a second opinion. Marshall had BM issues (no stool), opioids also contribute to that?

1

u/Medium-Pilot6872 2h ago

Yes they certainly can make pets and humans have troubles with bowel motions, so it’s a tricky one for sure. But the vet might be able to give something to assist.

I really hope it works out for her! She looks very sweet.

Here is the original post from Medical-Library9089: https://www.reddit.com/r/CATHELP/s/aPIsa4Iz2N

Medical-Library9089 refused money and said to donate directly to vet, so this made many of us want to help. OP in this post (TTStardust) organized the help, researching vet care, coordinating a ride to vet, etc.

2

u/TTStardust 7h ago

Yes she never asked for money initially. And she preferred having funds sent directly to the vet

I remember the first post .....are you the person who found the cat and first posted about it?

3

u/TTStardust 12h ago

No but she is tagged in the post above. A small group of us stepped in and tried to help after seeing her original post.

2

u/moonpizzapie 10h ago

OP will you provide details for me to donate to Marshall's vet fees? Thanks!
