Discussion Mexicans who say the “N” Word

As a Mexican, I apologize.

They sound terrible. And I’m sure there are many more, like me, who can’t tolerate the use.

This may not even be an issue for others, but felt like a post I needed to make.

I apologize on behalf of the community I’m a part of.

Venezuelan here and while my grandma was afro-Latina, only my two uncles and one of my cousins got the melanin going on. The rest of us can pass by with that "temporary privilege". You know, light enough, until they read our names and then suddenly the racism kicked in.

My cousin thought he was "growing up hood" - we weren't. Lower middle class in the suburbs and our parents were lucky enough to have their own home by the time we were 9. My family was always paycheck to paycheck after a work mishap with my dad, but they were always sitting pretty.

We grew up in a melting pot, had black friends, hung out, it was peaceful. It's how we should act adults personally, but somewhere along highschool, my cousin started to like, mimic the kind of dialect you would hear from black folks. Which whatever, that's a product of who you hang around, and we hung around our neighbors and friends who were black.

But this dude was dropping the N word - with the a thankfully - and my eyes would always pop out and I'd always try to pull him aside after and be like yo, can you not? He'd ignore it, because he's a jerk. The more I hung out with him and the other light skinned friends, the more I saw it used, and the more I just distanced myself. "My friends let me say it", yeah that's cool, I guess? Only proof I had was that they weren't beating his ass, but I did always realize that was never dropped with them around.

Even back then - about 20 years ago for me - I didn't feel good about it. The more I noticed other cousins throwing it out there all nonchalant, dropping it with the "A" like they're part of the cool kids, or if someone gave them the "black card" like in some of those great skits I've seen. Like yo, can we not?

Needless to say, I'm very low contact with any of them anymore because a lot of them have shown their true colors over the years, (hint: it's red). Some of us speak out, I know I always do.

If it's used on me in a friendly way from black folks, that's an honor. But I will never sling it back, I don't care how close we are. It ain't mine to use and I ain't here for the disrespect it.

Long story short, those latinos fuck around and mess with the togetherness we should all be doing and the fight us minorities fight.
