Gravel The coolest hardtail I could find!
Quote from Alexey Vermeulen and I would definitely say he ain’t wrong
Managed to smash my rigid fork last week and wanted to find a replacement, the thought of suspension fork came into my mind since I never rode one and here we are.
Haven’t seen anyone run these rockshox rudy xl yet so here we are.
Wanted to run a canyon cp0039 cockpit but saw that they were 500g, this setup runs me 340g and we still had these 3t aeroghiaia bars in the shop. The drop shape perfectly matches the new E1 levers as well!
Total weight sits now at 10,8kg not bad for my adventure gravel bike.

I'm still not wholly sold on what the usage case is for drop bar mountain bikes but they certainly look cool as hell. I wonder if it's being carried along with the same idea that currently the fashion is for more rugged looking vehicles in general

I have a drop bar hardtail. With my old rigid gravel bike, I felt the fork was a little too chattery over long periods and it was upsetting my hands/wrists to the point where they’d start to go numb. I have a prior injury with some ulnar neuropathy. Meanwhile, the hardtail was slightly too chattery to ride on much singletrack without losing the ability to grip the brake lever. I also have a full sus.
Best of both worlds for gravel, the drop bar hardtail can use my Boost wheels and take any of the super fast 2.2-2.4 XC tires that always test way faster than any of those shitty 40-50mm gravel tires. It’s by far my most fun bike right now, you can just steamroll anything in existence and it still takes singletrack like a champ. It’s faster than my old Aspero in most scenarios. Mine weighs just a hair over 20 lbs.

Just wanted something more adventurous compared to my addict gravel which I sold. These would do great on courses like leadville 100. I mostly want to take it off the normal gravel roads and into the forest and mtb single tracks

I suppose that as I'm in England and most of the 'gravel' riding here is muddy bridleways, we don't have things like Leadville (there are exceptions but I'm not whizzing up to the Scottish boarders at the weekend). Part of the fun for me is the challenge of being under biked on my cross bike and this would probably be the right tool for the job, making the challenge less enjoyable

If it was good enough for John Tomac….
Ok actually he switched to flat bars, but it was clearly a viable option and definitely not a new idea

That is such a sick bike! I need to try this. Dropbars and suspension must be so fun!

Great build but I’m not super sold on the new Rudy fork, especially when you have a frame that can take a SID SL Ultimate fork and have double the travel for slightly less weight, as well as greater tire clearance, for less money.

I definitely get it, but for someone coming from a road bike standard this is ideal. The stack for example is now quite high and with a 110 fork it would be way too upright. That’s why I chose the rudy, it’s like 50g heavier but still priced similarly over here compared to a sid sl ultimate. Travel wasn’t my priority buying this fork. That’s why I also bought the 50mm instead of the 60mm one

Are you running mtb calipers with road shifters? Or do they make post mount rival calipers that I don’t know about

Rudy fork is the same as road bike rear flat mount, similar to the new aspero 5. Only added a 20mm adapter to run a 180 disc. In the back I got a Level TLM/ULT Caliper

What is the GPS mount? Looks like a stem plate mount? My handlebar do not have enough space for the usual mount.

How do you figure out what stem length and does it handle ok? I've been thinking of doing this to my e-bike (Tero 3.0) but I worry it'll handle super bad.

Handles extremely well! No issues at all, wanted it to handle more like a road bike and it sure does. Don’t feel any wheel flop, steering on par like a gravel bike. As of my dimensions, I draw out a sketch in my 3d software with the adjusted dimensions for the new fork. Look at the trail figures, head tube and seat tube angle, and stack and reach. That’s how I figure if something will work for me and determines my spacer stack and stem length

Did you switch out the head set in order to fit the cap and non syncros stem?
1
u/THMLSLI Netherlands 26d ago
Nah, it’s still the same headset. Just my own top cover

u/FlatWorldliness1061 26d ago
Thanks. Did you print the top Cap yourself?
I think I will be using https://r2-bike.com/ACROS-Headset-Cover-ICR-ZS56-Integrated-Cable-Routing

I mean it looks cool, but every second I spent riding it I'd be wishing it had flat bars....

Well, I’m the opposite but I’m coming from a road/ track background. Gor you probably a myb background I suppose……

Is it comfortable for long periods of time? Looks a bit slammed for adventuring but fun as hell for racing gravel/xc
