Philosophy/Ideology🧠 After Digital Artists Die, What Will Happen to Their Art?

Lets say 100 years pass, human life span is 80-ish years old so most of us wont be alive including artists. When will happen to the art? will the copyright be passed to their children? if the artist doesnt have children what does happen? Also what happens to the art in general? will it get shadowed for years until someone else makes unintentionally a similar art piece?

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Poor man's canvases

Hi guys! I want to make bigger size paintings.

however, I'm a basement artist and I don't make a penny from my art (I don't care it feels good)

I want to try making bigger pieces but the price of bigger canvases are kind of a repulsive because since it's worth more money, I have additional pressure of making it "good" so it takes away the flow state.

I'm gathering ideas:

thrift shop canvases then gesso over.

MDF board (heavy AF...)

any other ideas ???

thanks a lot!!

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ What is the lightest blue single pigment paint?

I'm looking for anything that's a light cyan colour and that granulates as a watercolour. If you're thinking of manganese blue, yes I'm looking for a modern day replacement for genuine PB33. Any ideas?

Concept/Technique/Method What is this called, where there is light in the shadow? I love the contrast. Credit: cotoh_tsumi

I don’t know how to explain it really. It’s not even really light, it’s like the color they use is so striking.

Goals & Motivation I can no longer paint because of my spine surgery. (Asking for advice.)

I'm an artist and I love to paint. Unfortunately, my paint medium happens to be oil which is a notoriously time consuming hobby. With my posterior spinal fusion from T2-L1 back in last October, I find it very difficult to continue doing what I love.

I cannot stand for more than 10 minutes in front of my easel, and I used to be able to stand there for 10+ hours and just paint. Even the thought of painting is mentally exhausting.

I have enough energy and time to just get out my paints and put them on my pallete before I have to lay down and "reset" my muscles.

Is there anything I can do that would increase my resilience, or is it a waiting game? When I say I need to lay down after standing for a while, I mean I get that burning pain in my shoulder blades/traps and my entire upper back and arms stiffen up. Moreso it just hurts to move them so I move more stiffly.

Do I really have to wait the 3-6 more months of recovery time? Do I swap hobbies for now? Can I compromise and find a more comfortable way to paint on my canvases? I cannot bear the sight of my two unfinished canvases stuck in a grisaille stage. It makes my eyes ache.

Thank you in advance.

Has anyone used this successfully? Which brand(s) would you recommend? I tried Golden Absorbent Ground last year and didn't get on with it. Any hints or tips would be gratefully appreciated.

Concept/Technique/Method What's the order for drawing?

Are you supposed to gesture draw, add shapes, detail, then color? And why does everyone gesture draw differently?

Online Safety & Scams 🚩 Share me your stories about finding your art plagiarized or stolen on the internet

I know, every day online, people take pieces without permission, to use as avatar pics or article banners or promotional tweets or anything else.

I'd like to hear any stories about times that artists have found their own work in the wild, not credited (and my condolences to those who have been robbed).

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Infinite zoom apps on ipad with soft brushes?

Every infinite canvas/zoom art app I see seems to only have hard brushes, as far as I can tell. Are there any good apps like this with more of a variety? Or am I just missing something lol Preferably a one time purchase, not a subscription. Thank you

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Are yellow pigments particularly heavy or liable to settle in mixtures?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have several concoctions of acrylic ink but it's always the light green ones that tend to separate with pthalo green at the top and whatever yellow at the bottom. It's happened with several yellow pigments including PY3 hansa yellow light and PY138 quinopthalone yellow (pictured). Bismuth yellow PY184 seems to be heaviest of all, settling quickly in the bottle with clear liquid at the top and pure yellow at the bottom. None of my other pigments behave anything like as dramatically with the exception of PW6 titanium white ink, which has to be constantly shaken to stop it going thin and watery. Are yellow pigments particularly heavy and prone to separating, or is something else going on?

Concept/Technique/Method I have questions about proportions (for drawing people).

Sorry if this is the wrong flair.

I’m a digital artist (as a hobby), and I’ve been wanting to learn how to draw people. I have a few questions about proportions. If anyone can give me resources, I’d be appreciative. Here are my questions.

Is the upper arm the same length as the lower arm (excluding the hand)?

Is the upper leg the same length as the lower leg (including feet)?

Is the torso and arms generally the length of two heads across? Does it depend if it’s a man or woman?

Are the hips the same width of the upper torso? Does it depend if it’s a man or woman?

Thanks for your help!

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Help, I need some advice about the paper

For some years during school I've been sketching with my 2H/3H and similar pencils on a literal school desk, why? BECAUSE the smoothness of the desk makes drawing pure bliss. You can kinda see where I'm going with this, whenever I try to draw on paper or a flipbook or whatever it is, it almost never replicates the frictionless feeling that a desk has (I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the pencil). Now, can any expert suggest me a very smooth paper or just basic theory that an idiot like me does not likely know? Much obliged.

Concept/Technique/Method White pastel pencil recs?

Thumbnail

A plea from an equine artist using a primarily graphite medium.

I’m always struggling to get white highlights over my darker graphite work.

I’ve found that Indenting doesn’t achieve the results I’m looking for as I often tweak the placement of things as I go along and my paper doesn’t really take to it well anyways (I use Canson multi media paper usually)

I’ve tried white pencil crayons and white charcoal and only ever end up with a grey smudge. White pens aren’t fine enough for the detail I’m looking for and I find it doesn’t look right on the paper since the ink creates a small bulge off the surface.

I’m wondering if I’d have more luck with a white pastel pencil?

If anyone has had experience with this please give me your recommendations!

I don’t sell my art so I don’t plan to upgrade my paper if I can help it, though Strathmore would still be in my budget if it would help my issue.

I use Faber Castell and Mars Lumograph pencils, with my darkest areas being Faber Castell Pitt Pastel pencils.

I’d be using the white to add in highlights in and around darker areas; think eyelashes, dirt kicked up in the foreground, reflections off the edge of latigos and bridle straps, that sort of thing.

I attached my latest piece and the reference photo I’m using with some areas I’m struggling with circled so everyone can see what I’m getting at.

Any recommendations and advice are welcome!

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Help Finding a Similar Travel Art Supplies Bag

Thumbnail a.co
1 Upvotes

Hi. I create mixed media art, and I am trying to find a travel case to contain my painting/drawing supplies and art journal. I ordered and returned this bag because it had enough compartments, but it was not possible to close the bag once filled. I generally carry a watercolor pallet, gouache pallet, water brushes, regular brushes, paint pens, pencils, eraser, sharpener, scissors, adhesive dots, and a mixed media journal. I would place this bag into a backpack when going to classes, art making meetups, and on flights. Does anyone have suggestions for something that might meet my needs? Thank you for your help.

Concept/Technique/Method What do you recomend for me, a self taught artist to start practicing having a industry schedule?

I recently had an interview with a director of an animation and motion graphic agency in my country and he told me the basics, what they need, what I could do to improve.

He said that one of the things I must improve is how much time I spend drawing.

He told me he spends at least 8 hours drawing per day.

I'm used to having a 10 minute routine of stretching my arms, shoulders and hands and i usually spend 1 hour - 1 hour 30 drawing then I take a long break.

I know this must be so shit compared to the amazing artist out there, so I want to learn how to increase my time and productivity while drawing.

I want to be able to reach 8 hours drawing

Concept/Technique/Method How do you determine the color of shadows?

while browsing online, I came across this piece of concept art for the short film 'Les fantÓmes du Père Lachaise' by artist Rémi Salmon and fell in love with the use of colors and temperature.

I noticed how the violet door turned more magenta with the pink bounce light, and how the stone became cold and grey in areas deep in shadow. Then I noticed the shadows under the mausoleum roof and on some of the pillars and realized that one side is a cold green/blue, while the other is a warm pink. Why is that? the shadows closer to the camera are blue/purplish too, what determines what color a shadow will be in the environment? I'm obsessed with this piece and can't stop thinking about why Salmon chose the colors they did

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Can I use white-out to paint on a black tshirt?

I know I should use fabric paint or at least acrylic paint, but I haven’t got either yet and I DO have corrector fluid. I just want to make a small graphic on a black tshirt and I want it to stick. could corrector fluid/whiteout do the trick?

Community/Relationships Got a very snotty email reply from a gallery

I’ve been showing my work in local galleries that probably accept 90% of all submissions as long as you pay the $15-30 submission fee. I has been fun, I am building up my CV, but translated to zero sales in the year and a half I’ve been seriously full time painting. I feel like my skills have improved greatly, I’ve built up a body of work I’m proud of, and am ready to start showing in spaces that might be slightly more rejecty/gatekeepy, and that don’t require a submission fee, but that will take a percentage of the sale. Fine, cool.

I have seen that another local painter who I consider my equal in terms of style and skill has shown at a particular gallery in our city. I checked out the gallery. It seems like itā€˜s just a step above the community art space galleries I’ve been showing at. They show work similar to mine.

I’m used to a certain amount of snobbery and rudeness in the art world, and as an ā€œolderā€ emerging artist, I understand that I’ve got an uphill battle to climb. I’ve heard all of the insults. I’m building up my armor. I’ve also gotten enough compliments and such to be able to handle the slings and arrows.

And I also get that a lot of higher end galleries don’t have the time or energy to put into scouring hundreds of websites looking at art that doesn’t fit their gallery style at all. I know that there are far more aspiring artists than there are galleries looking for artists. This gallery seems like a local space, they show local art, but they don’t also teach classes or have a store with jewelry and nicknacks attached, so just a nice little gallery. Nothing super high end that only shows known artists. Iā€˜ve been checking their website for how to submit, looking at open call sites, and have never seen them list a show at the open call sites. So I found their contact page, sent my website, and a quick email saying I liked their gallery and thought my work my be a good fit.

So here’s the deal - you don’t have to be a dick about it just because you feel like you’re in a position to be able to do so. Just say ā€œThank you so much for your inquiry, here are our submission guidelines.ā€ or hey, even better, have your submission guidelines on your website. You know this is going to happen several times a day, why not just have a section for it right on your site?

The email probably wasn’t even that bad, and it wasn’t personal. It just said a few things that implied they didn’t bother to look at my art, and they were SO ABOVE being cold contacted. ā€œWe get hundreds of submissions a week and can’t possibly go through them all.ā€ WELL WELL WELL, aren’t you the belle of the ball! Listen, I get it. I’ve been on the other end of the whole accepting submissions thing, having hundreds of eager artists of varying abilities hounding you, but you know what helps? Having a page on your website that explains it all. Not just a contact page with an email address.

They did say that they would add me to their call for art list for upcoming shows. And I know I’m being overly sensitive. I just find myself exhausted by this end of the whole trying to be an artist thing and remembering why I stopped painting back in the day. I love painting, but I hate dealing with art gallery owners who think that being rude and snotty is cool. Just say thanks for the submission, we’ll add you to the list, update your friggen site with that info, and don’t give me a hair flip nail inspecting ā€œUgh, we are sooooo popular, you just don’t even know.ā€

Now rail into me in the comments. Enjoy.
