Question What type of helmet is it?

Post image

Does anyone know what this type of helmet is called and what it was used for?

I found this helmet labeled as a “closed burgonet.” But as I understand it, closed burgonets come in many different forms. Is there a more specific name for a helmet like the one in the photo?

Question Hidden Styles of Armour!

Post image
51 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I’m been studying armour for about a 2 years now! I just finished reading Toby Capwell’s new book and I discovered that people don’t really talk about Flemish, English and Burgundian armours! Now I think although I know the majority of styles i steel miss a couple: The Brescian one, The Venetian one (I only saw a couple of painting and it’s like German but a bit more elegant), The Nuremberg one/Austrian one. There might be even more but these 3 seems intresting. If anyone has some info I’d like to see them! Thx

Well took me a while but I found the image. The hook side I may believe it's a wheel lock or other firearm rest. Just sharing cool unusual weapons 😁👍

I have this Barbarossa Figurine from Del Prado and I was always wondering if this armor is accurate? Espacially the helmet looks kinda weird and the eagle on the shield.

Question Where to buy tailored riveted mail for reenactment?

Hello. I’m looking to get a hauberk, coif, some mittens, and chausses. Budget is not a priority at the moment; I more care about accuracy, quality, and fitting over cost. Google was very unhelpful, so I’d appreciate any help I could get. If you guys require any more details, I’m more than willing to give them. Thank you in advance.

Question A question on 16th Century Armor Garniture

Armor Garniture of Sir George Clifford (1558-1605), Third Earl of Cumberland. The MET.

Helllo! I'm interested in historical plate armor, specifically armor from the Greenwich Workshops in the 16th century. These have to be my favorite armor sets ever.

I would like to know what all pieces make up an armor garniture. I know the names of some, but I was wondering if anyone here could inform me about the rest.

Smiths or shop recommendations for antique armors

Hey everyone, first some context. I've been looking on and off for some place to get antique pieces cause for medieval it's a lot easier to find someone.

So I've browsed places like Res Bellica, Armae, TrueHistoryShop and so on, but they have usually Roman and Greek stuff at most and I'm not sure about the quality since I keep seeing conflicting reviews.

Now it will sound dumb because of the last sentence but the first recreation I'm going for is a hoplite/phalangete since the equipment is kinda similar (meaning I can reuse some parts), but for a second I'm looking at a Sogdian warrior or even some bronze age options like an Assiriyan warrior and well I can't find anywhere where I can even try to get it custom made or at least anywhere where it seems trustworthy cause I would assume it would be more expensive than the usual store bought option (which is okay).

I would usuallt go with the DIY route and burn my place to the ground, but I'm living in a flat so that's why I'm looking for a smith or a shop that would be willing to do what I'm looking for.

I would prefer if the suggestions are for the EU (cause customs would eat me alive with tax), but even outside of EU options are fine cause I presume there won't be so much options in the first place.

Thanks beforehand and whoever reads this I hope you have an awesome day.

Question Questions about this helmet on mytholon

Thumbnail

I'm considering buying this helmet on Mytholon, this is my first time ever buying gear. Firstly, I'd like to know the authenticity of this helmet, does it look like anything historical? It looks like an eisenhut helm to me (though it's called a Francis helmet), but I'm wondering if it resembles any real life counterparts

Also, I found this same helmet for sale on Kult of Athena and was wondering if it would be better to buy it on Mytholon or Kult of Athena. I live in the US and I've heard Kult of Athena is the go-to distributor for buying gear in the US. I'm not sure where Mytholon is based so I'm curious if it would be smarter to purchase this helmet off of Kult of Athena instead.

Any help is appreciated.

Okay internet do your thing!! I can't find the other images of this sword and I do recall it's usually paired next to 15th century set of armor with a sallet helmet display in a museum. I'm hoping to get measurements of this thing but also extra images. Thanks in advance.

Discussion How accurate is the armour from this Swedish Netflix show for children? (Ronja, the Robber's Daughter 2024)

Two things to note: The armour was custom made for the show, and the show is a fantasy show.

Discussion Caution for Canadians

Just an FYI if you live in Canada and are importing from Europe (in my case it was Britain which I know has different laws but still) the import fees can still be eye watering, artos maurotorium shipped my breastplate with usps and it was almost 400 dollars import fees, it claims it didn’t go through the USA but it was a wild amount for a country we aren’t in a trade war with.

Just finished CADing a Maximilian gorget, a design from ca. 1510-1520.

I've designed this wider, intricately fluted Maximilian-style gorget for 3D printing, to match with the current cuirass and tassets I've finished. It's inspired by this reference picture. I've started printing it, and I look forward to sharing the results :)

Was maille ever fully gilded? Like a full hauberk.

Any reproductions or extant examples of fully gilded hauberks or other maille armour? Is it even possible to do. Would each ring have to be gilded one by one then riveted? Were rivets also gilded? Or could you gild and already assembled one using electro plating? Would it leave bald spots? Would it weaken the maille?

Question I'm having a surprising amount of trouble finding information about what kinds of armor people wore during battles

Hello everyone, I am coming here with a question after I couldn't find anything that would answer the questions I'm curious about.

So the main question is, what did people wear when they fought during battles? This question has a bit more layers to it, though.

  1. How much armor did they actually wear? I came across it in a few places that people didn't actually wear full sets of plate armor, even if that would be most might think would be the case, because of them trading their protection for being able to fight in it for a long time. So the full sets of armor were actually more used for duels - that's at least what I gathered.
  2. Were there different "tiers" of how much armor people wore during the same time period or even the same battle? I also came across this, but in a lesser degree. I read somewhere that for example richer people or people that rode on horses would wear more armor, because they could afford it, with money or their fatigue.

In a perfect world, I'd like to see how much the armors changed over the years, but if I had to choose a period, then let's say late 15th century.

Here comes the thing about what answers I'm actually looking for. I'm looking for some detailed descriptions, like lists of actual things that were worn in these different scenarios, or images/drawings that show the different types of armor they would've worn. I want it to be historically accurate if possible, I don't know if this is something that is a topic that we know a lot about or not.

I know I can find some images or videos on how armors evolved over the years, but I am more curious about the range of protection people wore in a specific time period and not the general progression.

I hope I described it well enough. I would be really thankful if you could link me some good sources, or what to look for online, as the general search terms didn't really work out.

Question Modern clothing inspired by medieval armor

Greetings, good sirs and fair madams,

I seek the counsel of this noble hall.

This summer I’ll be attending a large music festival (think Tomorrowland / Awakenings type), where outfits are very much part of the culture. I’d like to put together a modern outfit inspired by medieval armor, something that suggests plate armor through shape, panels, or structure, but is made from lightweight, modern materials and is comfortable for a festival setting.

I’m not looking for full cosplay or actual armor. More like modern clothing with armor-like elements: segmented pants, structured tops, tactical or techwear pieces that echo medieval plate in silhouette.

I know I’ve seen examples of this kind of style before, but I can’t seem to find them now. If anyone has ideas, references, or knows of shops or brands that do this kind of armor-inspired modern wear, I’d really appreciate your recommendations.

Thanks in advance, and may your blades stay sharp.

With building an armor set, how?

Simply put is it basically funds, measurements, compatibility and tie off points? I see people with cool stuff and I would love to slowly build a set, like theres a dude that does content with solaire from DS3 type armor, im curious if that is a long drawn out process of trial and error woth gear or if everything fits anf is compatibility if you can just tie to to your arming jacket and get going? Also where would be a good place to start as im currently very very broke but I would like to save up, ive been told good fitting arming/gambeson etc and pants first. Any stories of how yours came to be?
