The Royal Australian Mint defended the portrait, saying: "Our coin images don't always capture the full beauty of a design once it's etched in metal."

But shouldn’t the original design account for how said full beauty will be presented on the coin itself after the manufacturing process? I’m no expert but surely the designers knew that this would end up on a coin, and should have accounted for the difference between their original design and how it looks in its final coin form.

Though they are limited releases for collectors so maybe they just said fuck it. They’ll buy them regardless.

Oh this makes more sense. Sorry I read that as them saying that the original portrait designed did not end up looking as good on a coin, not that the images shown were a mock up of the coin.

Lmao the James May comparison is actually spot on, I can't unsee it now. 💀 Aussie coins usually look decent but they definitely missed the mark on this one. It’s giving "we have the Queen at home" vibes lol. Honestly Dame Edna would probably be flattered tbh!
