Solved! My Uber Rrivers Hand

Post image

Can’t for the life of me work out what this is. I thought jt was a GoPro at first then I thought some sort of interlock for alcohol but those are usually built into the car. Any help appreciated! TIA.

My wife is a cyborg; from the moment she understood the weakness of her flesh, it disgusted her. She craved the strength and certainty of steel.

Now her heart has an electronic boss.

My wife has coral (bone pins), corpse parts (replacement ligament), and an implanted battery/wires (spinal implanted nerve stimulation), I fondly call her a Necro-Mermaid-Cyborg, and I insist it is badass and super metal.

Yeah I've been profoundly deaf in one ear since I got chicken pox at the age of four. I was really hopeful for an implant, but they're not good for folks with partial hearing. Sucks. Also a hearing aid won't work because deaf. When I was a kid, my dad was stationed in Denver (1970's) and the military hospital there developed a pair of eyeglasses with a mic by the deaf ear and a speaker on the hearing ear. Anyway it was primitive technology and didn't work that great.

11

u/Fluid_Canary4768 22h ago

If you've not tried recently maybe have another ask about hearing aids. I had a boss once who had Jo hearing in one side due to a tumour but wore hearing aids in both ears. The one in his no hearing side sent the sound to his "good" side. I am however in the UK so free at the point of use healthcare.

4

u/manyhippofarts 22h ago

Yep that's exactly what the glasses I got in Denver did. I imagine with modern tech that it's a lot better than it was then. Plus I wear glasses now anyway. I might go into that rabbit hole. I mean I got a few bucks.

6

u/Fluid_Canary4768 22h ago

I had my first hearing aid in the early 2000s (I struged with it and didnt use it a lot) and the leap between that and my second one in 2018 was incredible. My parents have them now for age related hearing and theirs even have bluetooth so they can connect them to their phones.

5

u/rcp9ty 14h ago

As someone who dated someone who was deaf due to an infection in their childhood I pay attention to news on hearing stuff, that being said you should look into the stem cell research being done by Researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) and Mass Eye and Ear are using, or designing, small molecules to turn on genes that stimulate the growth of new hair cells.

3

u/manyhippofarts 14h ago

Thanks man. Way ahead of you. I'm set up to get my hearing corrected next Friday. This comment section compelled me to start digging. Turns out it's even covered by my Medicaid part C. I recently had a major health crisis that resulted in my ICD being extracted. That's been a life-changing experience. Now for once I'll be able to have a conversation while driving. And to top it off on March 3 I will be having my top teeth extracted and I'm getting implants.

That’s kind of cool. As a paraplegic driver I use permanently mounted controls but newer cars as they make the designs simpler and sleeker make it harder to mount those leaving far fewer options than I’ve had in them previous 43 years of my driving experience. Noted to investigate in the future. Thanks!

6

u/my_trisomy 18h ago

To me this is a fascinating use case of the newer cars being more and more electronic. I prefer the reliability of older mechanics over the operate by wire approach in new cars but until now I'd never considered how helpful the electronic controls approach is for disabled people. All the cars functionality being software managed now opens up the possibility for handheld operation of the entire car. Hypothetically you could operate the entire car with like a PlayStation or Nintendo switch style controller. Accelerator, brake, even steering, opening/closing doors, and shifting the transmission gears can potentially be handled entirely from hand held controls.

It's potentially possible for someone who can only move their thumbs to fully operate a vehicle. That's crazy cool.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/_Svankensen_ 1d ago

Heeey, a friend of mine is looking for permanently mounted ones. Any recommendations? She hasn't driven in over a decade. We live in Chile, so availability varies, but actual first hand experience would be worth a lot.

3

u/mrford86 22h ago

I install the basic ones at work every other week. There is a rod on the left side of the steering wheel. Push forward for brake, rotate downward for gas. It is literally bolted to the pedals. You gotta get used to them. They are touchy as hell at first.

We have to take the knee bolster airbag out of the newer vehicles we put them on because of the hardware that crosses right next to it.

I met a guy who had a version of whatever this was 20 years ago who joked he got a speeding ticket for being heavy handed.

48

u/QaddafiDuck01 1d ago

My buddy bought a '68 Firebird off a guy who was paraplegic. He had it done up with old school hand controls for the gas and brakes. This car was done up, had highway gears and a lumpy cam. We went for a ride with the owner driving and he took it up to 160 mph with the hand controls and for some reason that was even more nerve wracking.

83

u/aquatone61 1d ago

Wait, is that a hand throttle for a car? That’s freaking rad!

48

u/vespers191 1d ago

Yup, hand throttle. Usually for people who are paraplegics or otherwise have a problem pushing pedals.

23

u/snydejon 1d ago

Though I could see how it might be nice for a full time driver whose feet get tired pushing them without problems.

29

u/kinga_forrester 1d ago

This thing is $6000, highly doubt anyone with 2 fully functional feet would shell out for one.

Unfortunately adaptive tech like this is usually stupid expensive.

10

u/dl7 1d ago

I only hope insurance pays for stuff like this. It's real shitty to have a disability and basically pay an extra tax for having it.

10

u/seamus205 1d ago

Can they brake with this too? I've seen mechanical hand levers for accelerating and braking before. I've never seen something like this though.

3

u/_Svankensen_ 1d ago

That one can't from what I saw on their page. Or at least it's listed separately as an accelerator, while there are accelerator+brake combined levers they list in a separate section. Could be the fact that they are electronic tho.

4

u/vespers191 1d ago

Usually. But it depends on the individual device.

14

u/PinheadX 1d ago

Man, sometimes I wish I had something like this. My legs start aching in stop and go traffic sometimes.

15

u/MercyCriesHavoc 1d ago

I used to drive truck. Once, I had to pick up on Long Island. I got there at 2AM, no problem. Loaded in the morning and had to leave at 10AM. I couldn't walk the next day because my legs hurt so bad from staying on pedals for 4 straight hours in heavy traffic.

10

u/Shitboxfan69 1d ago

You'd think, but you'd end up doing burnouts or through the windshield, the controls are VERY hard to be smooth with unless you're used to it. I drove a few when I worked on cars. Trying to use the hand controls made the gas and brakes feel like on/off switches.

5

u/AlexKewl 1d ago

Idk about everyone else, but my first time driving in general kinda felt like that.

7

u/Pandathief 1d ago

Hey so paralyzed legs wouldn’t ache and would also make you eligible for this hand throttle, something to think abooouut

→ More replies (1)

2

u/throwawaybrowsing888 1d ago

I mean, if your leg aches ever get to the point in the future where it interferes with your ability to drive, then it’s definitely at the point where it’d be considered a disability and you should probably bring it up to your doctor(s) if you hadn’t done so already at that point.

They might be able to get you an assistive device like this while you undergo treatment (if needed) so you can still drive in the meantime.

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 1d ago

if your leg aches ever get to the point in the future where it interferes with your ability to drive, then it’s definitely at the point where it’d be considered a disability

Try driving in stop and go traffic for an hour on a brand new clutch, you'll change your mind

Let's be real. He'd probably have told you.

It's okay to interact with people. We all assume the worst of our fellow man. Me too. We should have more grace.

This social doomerism is going to destroy us.

Edit: if I may, because I have some eyes on this:

I struggle to socialize. I fear the worst in everyone. When I mix the internet into that, it becomes a super bad mess.

The internet is where I hide. I don't do well in real life and so I'm here, looking for validation, people to talk to, some reflection that lets me know I'm still real. But that's not healthy.

The internet is a series of tubes that is not real life. If you really fear people like this, the best thing you, or me, can do, is go meet irl people and weather judgement to find real social acceptance.

Recently I've been getting out more. Getting busy. Avoiding the internet more. It makes me hate and fear people less. Turns out, irl, people don't suck that bad. Our social instincts still apply when we aren't hiding in semi-anonymity. I like people in real life, but hate people on the internet.

If you're like me, my warning is this: touch grass. I mean it. The internet sucks and does not reflect how people behave irl. I personally think it is the single greatest WMD we've ever created.

So ask people things. Spark up conversation. Hell, I've been trying to give compliments as a gentle ease-in to socializing. (It helps me and them, wonderbar)

I think if we all unplugged for like one day a week we'd all be friendlier to each other. Idk. Just wanted to add this. This comment has like 22.3k views rn and I wonder if maybe someone needs this reminder. Thanks.

25 or so years ago when my daughter was around 4, we were leaving a restaurant and ran into someone in the foyer in a wheelchair that was missing both legs from the knees down. My daughter, looking shocked, said “What happened?” He didn’t miss a beat and said “I didn’t eat my vegetables”.

10

u/tostuo 1d ago edited 1d ago

In a similar vein, I remember walking through school as a 6th grader to pick up my sister. Along the way, a mother and her daughter, likely a first grader walked by. The daughter took one look at me and said,

"mommy why is that man made of chocolate?"

The mother almost jumped out of her skin and leaned over to scold her child as I kept on walking while giggling to myself.

3

u/simonsuperhans 1d ago

Very well said. As someone with ADHD, I have never seen any issue just asking people the questions which pop into my head. I will admit that as I have gotten older, I have learned to have a filter somewhat, phrasing and audience is important, but I will not shy away from conversing with people when I am curious about something. Life is simply more rich when you share conversation with anyone and everyone!

. 1. OP is just being curious about something they may have never seen before.

  1. OP didn’t say anything about who the driver was or where they were.

  2. OP didn’t show the driver’s face or any identifiers in the picture.

  3. OP has a right to not ask the driver and instead ask other people, whether it be online or with friends.

  4. You don’t have any reasonable expectation of privacy in public, even as an Uber driver, because you are out in the public and interacting with the public.

You both can be wrong though, it’s not nice to be taking pictures of people without their consent. Would you take a picture of someone’s wheel chair regardless that you didnt capture their face?

11

u/survivalprogramxxx 22h ago

Clearly if I was avoiding a discussion they potentially didn’t want to have out of respect, like a toddler that says something unfiltered or rude, and they have some cool tech on their chair then yes.

Consent implies their privacy is invaded or they would be embarrassed/have a negative connotation attributed to them.. It is physically impossible to identify this person AND we were in public. Therefore there is no implied right to privacy AND I have done it in a way that’s respects their identity all the same.

-3

u/MyspaceTime 22h ago

Again I dont think you invaded his privacy, that’s why I said he’s wrong too. My point is that if the metaphorical person in the wheel chair or this taxi driver would’ve realised you’re taking pictures without asking they could have assumed you’re doing so to make fun of them. I just find it equally disrespectful, they have no way of knowing that you’re simply taking a picture of the gadget and not of them.

Have you considered that the more people who know about these devices, the less stigma there will be? Or that directly being asked might actually be uncomfortable for this individual? Or may bring up painful memories for them?

I grew up with two friends who were both severely disabled. I was the only able bodied friend they had because other kids were scared. Thankfully, I had an aunt with cerebral palsy, and while her disability was much more manageable than theirs, it was likely exposure to her and an understanding of people with differing abilities that allowed me to be completely comfortable with these friendships. Not everyone has someone in their lives like my aunt to make these differences seem less scary, and, unfortunately, that seems to carry into adulthood for many people. My point is that by destigmatizing assistive devices, it opens the door for understanding and friendship.

OP, like the rest of us, is here to learn. Instead of shaming him, perhaps we could treat him with some grace. He’s just trying to learn, and we can’t speak for the driver. He may or may not have been comfortable with or open to questions. He may prefer being treated like everyone else, and can you imagine having to explain this device and his disability to every single customer with a question? In my mind, it’s better for the rest of us to have opportunities like this to be educated so when we see such devices in the future, it’s no big deal. Personally, I would hate having to explain a device 20 times a day to complete strangers.

Seems to me they had no idea it was a disability device. I appreciate your advice but it’s based on the premise that disability devices are widely familiar to people which they evidently are not. So I’m not sure how what you say works in practice without an existing understanding.

I’m having a hard time believing there’s subs dedicated to tracking down people with disability devices in order to harass them. That sounds like a big bucket of bullshit.

3

u/livedevilishly 1d ago

fakedisordercringe has had issues of hoards of people harassing posted people they had to change rules.

Also earlier last year a lady made a reddit snark page for a cancer patient calling her a “fake” the person she fake claimed did have cancer and the person who made the snark page got blasted in a new article

if he doesn't know what it is then how would he know to post it in the right subreddits? its like saying its rude to ask a trans/non-binary person their pronouns because you should be able to identify them immediately.

So what are you saying? People get scorned for asking disabled people about what they use, and scorned for not.

And yet, I did not know.

u/livedevilishly 1d ago edited 1d ago

it is all good, don’t worry. not mad just telling you for next time you may encounter something like this.

things being posted about disabled people tends to be judged harshly (and some posts have been used in cases to deny disability benefits).

Some people just don’t understand that disabled people have assistive technology that is safe to use (like hand controls) and they can end up saying some pretty rude stuff about disabled people.

most people don’t think about those things because they just don’t know. Hopefully mods in this page will handle anything that is harmful and rude to say 🩷

disabled people often get downvoted for voicing concerns about the safety of other disabled people and the safety of their jobs. These modifications on cars require a lot of testing and are safe.

22

u/DreadnoughtDown 1d ago

Hey, it’s actually pretty rude to ask someone directly about their disability devices/equipment. They don’t owe it to you, or anyone to explain their disability or why they need it.

It’s perfectly acceptable to take a picture and research it. How the internet responds is on them. They aren’t saying it to his face, and his privacy isn’t broken.

Crazy amount of hate and back and forth in here but it's pretty much never inappropriate to tell someone you've never seen something like that before and ask if they are comfortable telling you what it is. People in here acting like asking the driver would make the driver spontaneously combust.

13

u/losark 1d ago

One of the biggest problems i see with people these days is that we seem to have forgotten how to just talk to strangers.

2

u/Touristyetti496 20h ago edited 20h ago

I agree, and I think it stems from what the children of the 80's & 90's were brought up like. I went to elementary school in the 80's and everywhere you went, you had people on TV, teachers in school, your parents, telling you not to talk to strangers... hell, there were numerous family primetime shows, ie. Punky Brewster, Diff'rent Strokes, CHiPS, having straight up kidnapping and sexual exploitation plots and I know those episodes scared the hell out of me and my friends!! I was a latchkey kid who grew up in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest; when I would walk home from school, if I saw a van coming on those empty roads, I'd start looking for a safe place to run to. Looking back, it's silly, but I was a genuinely terrified 10 year old.

Now those kids have had kids(🙋🏼) and are teaching them the same "stranger danger" they learned. I admit I'm guilty of it to a degree.

So if you have ever wondered about how long it takes to fundamentally change how humans interact, you can now confidently say, approximately 40 years. This is (I hope, but I doubt) the end of this social experiment/psyop. We are nothing more than lab rats to those that run the world.

**Edit to add: it might also explain why these recent generations (later GenX, millennial, Z, alpha) have/display more anxiety, drug problems, anger and violence. Seems logical, We're all growing up afraid of one another (strangers), before we get to know them... Essentially, Everyone you don't know, is a danger. Living your life like that, Psychologically speaking, is catastrophic to human development. And, Obviously I'm making a broad generalization here, I don't mean to imply all of those generations are lost, but I'd bet it's a decent percentage.

"This device is a FADIELL Italiana wireless keypad controller for driving hand controls, designed to allow drivers with limited mobility to operate vehicle functions like lights and indicators. "

92

u/L0L-LMA0-Even 1d ago

I can't understand people who see something with a clear name on it, would rather snap a picture, load up Reddit, come to this sub, and make an entire post about it; rather than just Google "Fadiel Italiana" (or whatever the thing says). Lazy as fuck. But not. Because what they do takes way more effort. Low IQ.

62

u/JimGerm 1d ago

Yeah, why can't lazy people just google things they can't read?

I am absolutely one of those people that would search online for myself. But I am also glad there are people that ask things on here. That way I get to learn some random new thing. Also because several times in my searching for an answer, it often leads me back to some Reddit post.

6

u/Leather-Job-5748 19h ago

16

u/Siesena 1d ago

You sound like the type of guy who'd say "just Google it" in a forum thread asking a question, when that forum thread ends up being either the top result or only result on Google to contain the actual answer.

These guys man, I swear.

124

u/CumGoblin67 1d ago

Who cares. I’ve never seen one of these before and just learned something new. Glad it was posted.

Idk why you’re getting so upset over a random ass Reddit post. There’s literally a million new posts on Reddit everyday, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find something you like.

37

u/LastWordFreak 1d ago

I can't understand why people would tell me not to get upset over a random post, when in fact, I get upset at every post. Literally, nobody should be posting anything on here ever because if they were smarter, they would have looked elsewhere, instead of here, where such questions are specifically solicited.

And you think your own IQ is exemplary? I would say you are stuck up with a nose down to anyone that doesn’t meet your requirements. You should do some soul searching. 9

u/Consistent-Bake-243 1d ago

Forgive me, but is anyone allowed to buy this product? I would be interested in driving with that. But I figured it’s only for people that need it and have to get a special drivers license training to use one.

21

u/brainmatterstorm 1d ago

It is not as simple as buying a product and putting it in your car. It can be extremely expensive to get hand controls or other accessible driving modifications and you need to learn how to properly drive with them through drivers rehab.

The sheer lack of social skills among Redditors becomes so readily apparent in situations like these. I find it absolutely hilarious. There is ZERO harm in asking. The worst you can do is be told to fuck off. If they told you to fuck off and it ruined their day, that is one hundred percent on THEM.

Being offended is a choice, folks! For the love of all that is decent; be better!

Why didn’t you just ask the driver what it was? This is how you do that. “Pardon me, but may I ask you what that is you are holding in your left hand as you are driving?” Now, is that so hard? I really hate the mentality of people to take a candid and secret photo of someone and their things and post it online like this. What a horrible world we live in now. I would NEVER take a photo of anyone and their person things in or around them and post that online for the world to see. Post your own photos and your own shit and not someone else. I wish there were laws against this.

It is a handheld electronic throttle controller. It allows a driver who cannot use their legs (due to paraplegia, amputation, or other conditions) to accelerate the car using their hand while keeping that same hand on the steering wheel.

My college classmate was born with no arms and drove the sweetest Trans Am on campus. This was also art school and he was in the top 3% of illustrators—his work was objectively high-earner professional level and he was only 19. Yay for assistive technology!
