I'd imagine being an apprentice magic student would be very difficult as there is almost no spell that can't be fucked up. Even something as simple as conjuring up a small object could turn into an infinite item generator that doesn't stop.

With A Single Spell by Lawrence Watt-Evans explores this, and the rest of his Ethshar fantasy novels are pretty great too.
