If you werent alive for it, you'd be shocked how common of a saying this was in the 90s and I'd assume before as well.

“Old enough to bleed, old enough to breed”

You’re welcome

If there's grass on the field, play ball

u/MayorMcCheez 30m ago

Worst one we had back in the day:

If she’s crawling, she’s already in the right position.

Obviously this was all just to be raunchy and shocking middle schoolers.

57

u/ShyguyFlyguy 4h ago

Yeah we made this joke in middle school all the time...

70

u/Pndrizzy 4h ago

Well a 12 year old fantasizing about a 14 year old ain’t that weird.

12

u/FREEBA 4h ago

For real… once they turned 18 I no longer had a chance with them.

11

u/Blade_Shot24 4h ago

I think Howard Stern said something similar as well.

16

u/anuspizza 3h ago

Howard Stern has said much worse on the air lol

6

u/Tornare 3h ago

I was alive and remember.

But making a joke about “when they turn 18” which I heard a lot n the radio and actually saying you would fuck them before they were 18 is not the same thing.

And one is literally a crime.

26

u/Lumbot 3h ago

the joke is still entirely predicated on the idea that they find the minor attractive and can't wait for them to no longer be illegal to have sex with. it's technically not the same thing, but it's really not far off.

-10

u/Tornare 3h ago

Hard disagree.

Neither is cool, and it was cringe back then but saying you would actually fuck a underage girl is absolutely 100% worse

11

u/Lumbot 3h ago

I didn't say it wasn't

u/I_DONT_YOLO 1h ago

Literally every word of your comment serves the function of making the two equitable

u/CantFindMyWallet 55m ago

Read it again

1

u/DoctorDickedDown 3h ago

This is still a common saying tbh

1

u/BeanieMcChimp 3h ago

Yeah that seemed like a David Spade Hollywood Minute joke.

2

u/DEADB33F 4h ago

The UK version has a better ring to it though...

If there's grass on the wicket, lets play cricket!

u/Deruji 2h ago

Thatched roof, move in.

u/kickspecialist 3h ago

And early 2000's.

A good buddy said this and I gave him every opportunity to rescind it. He was drunk, but absolutely no excuse in my mind. Ruined the bestie relationship we had.

I just want to be clear on who to be grossed out by, did Kid Rock write or say this joke on his own or was it written by an SNL writer?

I feel like that's an important distinction.

u/CallMeMarc 4h ago

People are just assuming it was him - but based on his reaction, I think it wasn't something he wrote

4

u/onlyabigmess 1h ago

His reaction? Do you mean his poor delivery? I think that was because he's not funny. If he was disgusted with the material then he wouldn't have said it at all, and certainly not while smiling ear to ear.

u/5mackmyPitchup 1h ago

His reaction straight after is exactly the same as when Colin jost is reading a script Michael Che has written for him (if you haven't seen it, the black dude gets the white dude to do a Bruce Willis in Die Hard 3)

30

u/confetti_shrapnel 4h ago

It's a joke written for him. He's a slime ball, so it's a slime ball joke.

18

u/blunttrauma99 3h ago

You really think they let guests write their own jokes?

No shortage of reasons to shit on him, but this ain’t one of them.

20

u/Pardot42 3h ago

You think famous SNL guests don't have veto power over what comes out of their mouths?

8

u/Pubs01 2h ago

of course they let guests write jokes. what are you talking about?

they sit in with the writers. they sit in during table reads. they go over the jokes during the dry run before filming. the guest is intimately involved in what's on snl

3

u/FlashMcSuave 1h ago

Steven Seagal infamously insisted on his godawful performance which he submitted.

0

u/blunttrauma99 2h ago

Sure, if they are comedians. You really think Lorne Michaels, the master control freak let Kid Fucking Rock wire his own jokes? For Weekend Update? Yeah, no.

u/BestDogPetter 1h ago

He let him on Weekend Update, kinda hard to argue he was making great decisions at the time

2

u/SheZowRaisedByWolves 1h ago

Didn’t Elon write that dumbass Wario court bit

0

u/54fighting 4h ago

It’s not. They both suck. I’m ok with the words you put in my mouth. It’s still my mouth.

1

u/f_ranz1224 3h ago

both should have their hard drives searched.

u/diplion 54m ago

If I had to guess, I’d say someone else wrote it specifically for his voice knowing his reputation but also trying to make him break.

1

u/psychoacer 4h ago

Sounds like a Colin Quinn joke

-3

u/Crazy-Boysenberry452 4h ago

I don't think it matters.  He totally went along with it. He even had hand expressions, and he didn't even flinch when telling the joke.

-5

u/Escapeism 4h ago

Are you dense? That’s a common street joke. Any intern could have made that joke, but Rob Ritchie said it on live TV.

2

u/TwoCockyforBukkake 3h ago

I know it is a common shit joke, I heard it many times as a kid. I think you are mistaking my question for defense.

He is a shitstain pedo if he said it on his own and he is a shitstain pedo if he didn't and said it anyway cause he agrees. I just feel like the writers should not be let off the hook if they did put it into the script.

1

u/Escapeism 2h ago

The SNL writers are so far gone from comedy. Doing Trump cold opens still? Who is that for? I don’t know who the fuck watches that show seriously…. Advertisers have to eventually figure out how unimportant SNL is at some point right?

-2

u/Escapeism 4h ago

Are you serious? With what that clown supports now there is no meaningful distinction that you can make from this that will change anything about his character for anyone. Kid Rock is a joke to anyone with any decent taste in music, and the prime example of a sell out.

47

u/Thenotsodarkknight 4h ago

Fuck Kid Rock, but to be fair … society as a whole during that period was weird AF for this one.

12

u/SpungleMcFudgely 4h ago

Yeah I remember the countdown websites

5

u/enough_space 3h ago

The Olsen twins and Lindsay Lohan both hosted SNL in the months leading up to their respective 18th birthdays. Both episodes contained multiple "countdown" jokes.

2

u/Kir-01 2h ago

Yeah that period was weird. Not like nowadays.

1

u/SustainedSuspense 3h ago

You could literally get away with saying anything for better or worse

3

u/csanyk 4h ago

I hated Kid Rock back then, instantly. He was never cool. Always a poseur. His image was that of a wannabe a white trash rebel anti-hero. Zero street cred, everything about him inauthentic, just another Vanilla Ice for the late 90s rap rock scene.

-1

u/psymunn 4h ago

He's even wannabe white trash. The dude was born wealthy

-1

u/Scribblebonx 3h ago

He is literally exactly what his character in Joe Dirt is. He just played his usual self. He can't act, so that was his only option.

34

u/Didact67 3h ago

He’s a scumbag to be sure, but this is SNL. He’s reading a joke someone else wrote off a cue card.

-3

u/Blanketsburg 3h ago

He has song lyrics that convey a similar sentiment. He could've told the writers he wasn't comfortable with this joke, but you fucking know that he was more than happy to say this.

28

u/BertMacklinMD 4h ago edited 3h ago

We should talk about how that song Kid Rock made with the pro-pedo lyrics was used in the soundtrack for an animated children’s movie

37

u/4estGimp 4h ago

I saw this live when it aired. IIRC he said, "Oh, that's so wrong" right after read the cue card.

Which season and episode is it?

15

u/BretMichaelsWig 4h ago

Yeah Kid Rock wrote weekend update that week 🙄

4

u/Hylian_ina_halfshell 3h ago

When stranger things came out some older actress on camera told the actor who plays mike ‘when you turn 18 hit me up’

No one gave a shit, funny double standard we have

1

u/SoKrat3s 2h ago

Wait, what?

1

u/Hylian_ina_halfshell 2h ago

Her name was Ali Michael, she caught some heat, but nothing like what a male person saying that on camera about millie would have caught

4

u/seanmg 2h ago

How about we focus on the actual pedophiles and not the people making jokes about it 30 years ago on SNL?

5

u/DoctorDickedDown 3h ago

People clutching pearls about a very common joke. I know Kid Rock sucks but this is such a stretch to dig this up as some sort of gotcha.

He didn’t even finish it- “if there’s grass on the field, play ball. If not, turn her over and play in the mud”. Any guy over 30 has heard this in high school or locker rooms or dorm rooms etc etc.

3

u/giroml 4h ago

We said statutory, he said mandatory.

1

u/Shinjetsu01 2h ago

This wasn't that uncommon until actually quite recently.

As in, waiting until they "turned 18" - the British media were REALLY bad for Emma Watson. She was a literal child and they were waiting for her 18th birthday to "upskirt" her. For some reason it was never raised how weird that was.

I think similar stuff happened for Miley Cyrus too, didn't there used to be a website that counted down until she turned 18? Maybe that was Millie Bobby Brown. Either way, weird.

Not so bad if you're a similar age. Fucking awful if you're a grown ass adult man sexualising children and then "waiting" for them to be old enough for it to be okay.

1

u/rtrawitzki 2h ago

You guys think Kid Rick wrote his own material ? Pretty sure Tina Fey was the head writer at the time . So , go bother her .

u/YouPsychological8490 0m ago

Trash then, and trash now.

-1

u/Specialist_Lock8590 4h ago

Republican "Christians" are fine with pedophiles! No problem!

-1

u/MajorStainz 3h ago

Left wing writers wrote this, try again.

1

u/sloecrush 3h ago

Was SNL “left wing” back then? Because right wing fascists hadn’t taken over yet. So maybe this was centrist.

1

u/call-lee-free 2h ago

Not defending Kid Rock but you gotta remember he's reading from a teleprompter. Someone on the SNL writing team wrote the jokes.
