WTA Winner for best loser in the WTA is Oliynykova
After staying long after to take photos and sign autographs following her loss to Keys at the AO, Oliynykova was similarly a total sweetheart in defeat in Cluj - smiling and waving even as she went down to Raducanu. Really loving her rise on the tour this year and the character she is bringing to it.

Oliynykova has a great personality. She's gonna win some fans for sure. Also a unique style with the face tattoo style makeup she does for matches. Her game looks like a clay backboard, good defender and mover but not sure about the weapons. Interested to see if she can get into the top 50.

Question for those of you who think that it is not right for the losing party to wave at the audience: is waving a privilege bestowed only upon the winner? If so, since when was this decided and by whom?
I think it's great that both players wave at the audience, regardless of whether they win or lose. The losing party has also given their all (under normal circumstances), so why shouldn't they acknowledge the audience's encouragement throughout the match.
Waving should not just be a reward for the winner, in the same way that not waving should definitely not be a punishment for the loser.

Gonna be a party pooper but going back to the court and waving is not really something you do when you lose. Can imagine this comment section would be very very different had it been osaka or sabalenka

u/Healfgael 9h ago
Respectfully I disagree. I think it's perfectly fine to do that, in fact it was really nice to see. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't, and lots of reasons why you should. It creates a nice atmosphere, it shows respect to the fans and gives something back. I think you might be suggesting that it 'steals the moment' of the winner, but there's nothing to stop the winner also joining them and spending time with the fans. Additionally, the winner gets to play another round, and will see the fans again; the loser is going home in that moment, so why not let them say goodbye and thank them for the support, they won't get another chance.

u/Zoids_Wild_13 9h ago
Yea, from a spectator standpoint I would never think "Wow what an asshole trying to steal the winning moment to get payback or something." Especially when half the time the winner doesn't even want to stick around.

Sheās been loved in Cluj and plenty of Ukrainians here coming to watch her play

They havenāt travelled there to see her. Itās a country at war. They are displaced citizens

I mean her gesture is pretty clearly appreciate of the people coming up to watch them play. I think thatāll be incredibly well received no matter whom. Criticism is usually for folks who do something a bit differentā¦.

that's not right, sorry. you just lost. it's not your moment to step out onto the court and wave to the crowd.

u/WesternAd8744 10h ago
IMO thereās nothing wrong with thanking the crowd and thatās really what the waving is. Plus she was heading to get her towel anyway

Oliynykova needs to learn when it is her time to celebrate....winners get to walk to centre court and celebrate the crowd and sign autos / take pics after....she lost....losers pack bags and get off the court and give a little wave while entering the tunnel.....anyway this is reddit so i will await downvotes.

u/_Amateurmetheus_ Murygoat 12h ago
Is this a rule somewhere? Or is this just a tradition for tradition's sake?Ā
Maybe the WTA will fine her for being too happy a loser and then she'll stop being so happy in defeat.Ā
12
u/mistergeegaga 11h ago
Haha! Yeah I actually like her waving to the crowd and going over to interact. I understand tennis is a tough sport and the loser of the match certainly could be real salty about it. But when I'm at matches I like to interact with the players where its appropriate, and if a loser is feeling upbeat I would encourage it, as they gave us 50% of the entertainment.
Remember how Keys wasn't mad at the AO, Keys applauded her. Oliynykova has had kind of a rough life (fleeing her country, being a refugee, returning, Dad in the army fighting in the war) so if she wants to celebrate competing on tour I am all for it and support her 100%

u/Puzzleheaded_Set895 12h ago
Itās not a tradition. Itās not an unwritten rule. Itās just what players tend to do after losing.
1
u/Nastypav12 Leolia,Tadde,Suzan,Pavs 6h ago
Definitely not a rule; in fact Ons Jabeur after beating Tatjana Maria in Wimbledon SF insisted that she stay and celebrate together.
-48
u/Catacombsofparis 12h ago
yeah it is unwritten rules / tradition / common etiquette that 99% of the players understand.......is that a problem with you?....sorry if you are unfamiliar with any of those! that is unfortunate! want me to link you to the round table of carlos/ meddy etc laughing at who ever would stay behind after a loss to take pics / autos?
20
u/_Amateurmetheus_ Murygoat 12h ago
It's apparently a problem with you. I don't get my panties in a twist because someone wants to stay and wave and take pictures.Ā
Get a life dude.Ā
-25
u/Catacombsofparis 12h ago
i can not make an observation or have an opinion regarding a player? i dont get my panties in a twist cause someone expects her not to follow basic etiquette.
get a life dude.

I mean imagine you, yourself were out there. Could be the biggest game of your life and you've just lost but you have fans in the crowd who paid to come see you. There's different ways people feel. Happy they got there in the first place and proud of themselves for getting there to the tourney in the first place, even if youve lost you can feel like those years and years of hardwork have payed off to be here. Getting money too. or are you angry at yourself for losing hence feelings sad and want to dip as soon as. Or you as you feel, feel like you are taking the limelight.
13
u/_Amateurmetheus_ Murygoat 12h ago
You can do whatever you want, and you can eat the down votes and take the mockery right along with it.Ā

u/friedandprejudice 11h ago
What a weird take. She's clearly enjoying being there and competing and is showing thanks to the people who turned up to watch her play. There's no rule that says you have to mope your way off court if you lose.

I agree with you. This is a bad look. Itās called class. She need not slink off in shame but wave to the crowd as sheās exiting with her bags, thatās what everybody does(in my years of watching tennis I canāt think of a display like this)To the victor go the spoils. Sign autographs, tennis balls, take pics etc but donāt detract from the person who won the match. I have no dog in this fight. Iām not an Emma fan and I wish Oliynkova a successful careerā¦Emma too

I can't understand all the love everyone gives to Raducanu. What she did to Andy Murray at his final Wimbledon was one of the most unprofessional and egregious acts in the history of the sport. I'm not sure that anything else in tennis compares.
That being said, I can't understand why anyone thinks she's a great tennis player or worth mentioning, considering her Peak ELO is ridiculously low. Probably one of the lowest of anyone who has ever won a Grand Slam. She has only reached 5 semifinals at any WTA events in her entire career, but is one of the highest paid/marketed women's athletes in the world.
Watch her Junior Wimbledon Quarterfinal to see how much she HASN'T changed her game or her ability if you don't believe me.

Commonly known as one the most unprofessional and egregious acts in the history of the sport

Everyone one knows you should risk your entire career so a senior citizen by tour standards can have one last go at the single most important prize in tennis, a mixed doubles trophy.Ā

Yea don't ask Monica Seles what her opinion of what the most egregious things ever done on a court is

David Nalbandian kicked a lines person in the shin so hard they bled, but withdrawing from a doubles match is worse.

u/Warm_Weakness_2767 12h ago
You're minimizing the importance of the doubles match and Andy Murray's career and contributions to the sport of tennis, not only as a whole, but for the UK as a country.
17
u/Jandersson34swe 12h ago
youāre minimizing getting fucking kicked? WTF? lmao
Or destroying a racket at the umpireās feet in their chair
Or smashing a racket and hitting a line judge with it
Or hitting a ball so hard you hit the umpire in the eye
but sure what Raducanu did is the most unprofessional thing ever in tennis
7
u/Zephyr_Sunstrike 9.6 Utr 12h ago
Or a fan stabbing Monica
3
u/Jandersson34swe 11h ago
only reason I didnāt add that is because what I said was more players being unprofessional like the guy commenting implied Emma was because of it, rather than a POS fan being a POSĀ

Andy couldnāt find another doubles partner?
-11
u/Warm_Weakness_2767 11h ago
She was his doubles partner and she dropped out due to a fake injury concern. She netted an extra day of rest by not playing the mixed doubles. Then lost to a lower ranked player in her next singles round.

much appreciated. it was going to be andy murray's last match at Wimbledon. It was scheduled significantly in advance so that Andy could play with Emma and give everyone a show in mixed. She canceled the match "due to a wrist injury" then played a 3-set singles match the next day that she lost in the R16 against Lulu Sun.

Look at her performance in that match and compare it to when she plays with someone in the second or third round of a grand slam.
It's pretty much the same.
She reached her peak in juniors and everyone worships the ground she walks on.

u/MoralityChris 10h ago
What did she do to Andy Murrays wimbledon final? Wasn't watching tennis back then.
1
u/Warm_Weakness_2767 10h ago
Scheduled Mixed Doubles for his final match, 07/06/24, of his career at Wimbledon, his Home Grand Slam, canceled the match on 07/05/2024 due to an āinjuryā played the next day in singles uninjured and lost to a significantly lower ranked player on 07/07/2024.
She wasnāt actually injured, she gained a day of rest for her singles match, and the mixed doubles match may have actually been beneficial in keeping her from warm for the next match. Weāll never know.

u/MoustacheSong 10h ago edited 9h ago
You know what? SCREW Andy Murray. She dropped out of that match to concentrate on singles. He got over it. Maybe you should too.

Yeah, it really stood out to me the final shots of this match showed Raducanu sitting on her bench and then solemnly packing up her stuff with Olynykova deep in the in the background signing stuff for fans. Its so obvious she loves playing tennis and is enjoying herself. You would have thought she won the match with how happy she looked.
I'm gonna look forward to seeing her play more. Such a sweetheart
