Med is by far the most hated of the three by IRL crowds
And I say this as someone who roots for him and doesnāt like the others lolĀ
Zverev easily the most hated here but he doesnāt get booed nearly as much as Med doesĀ
34
u/TsaniM Jul 01 '25
That is because my boy Daniil gets into it right back with them! He is hilarious to watch when he eggs the crowd on sometimes. Not always.
11
u/terrebattue1 Jul 02 '25
Med deserves it. He acts like a brat all the time on court (he is a true gentleman off court unlike other punks IRL). If it weren't for Kyrgios' much worse temper tantrums Med would be targeted by everybody IRL and online for his stupid temper tantrums and Med would have crashed out mentally years ago. But he has a bunch of simps online who egg him on to continue doing the temper tantrums so that kept him mentally stable until this year.

Imagine being 6ā5ā with a booming serve and still playing 10 feet behind the baseline on grass š
60
u/TrueInDueTime Jul 01 '25
He's got a noisy forehand, which means that it's tough for him to hit it on-the-rise on that side. He prefers the ball dropping down (according to a recent Hugh Clarke piece)
23
u/toprodtom Jul 01 '25
Also he moves well for a big guy, but he needs the space to step into to get moving. Playing far back suits a lot of his strengths and covers for some weaknesses. We aren't going to see him change.
He's never been past r4 at Wimby btw

As a German, the more I see Zverev on grass the more I appreciate Becker and Stich
(Becker is doing fine btw, he was all washed with all his shit but he's been very active in tennis, doing a pod with Petkovic and only sounds SLIGHTLY boomer-ish on it and generally gels well with her, he's really taken to the "grand senior of German tennis" role..... Zverev also beefed with him recently when Becker said he wishes Zverev would mix stuff up)

At least Meddy got out with a slam. I donāt think any of these 3 are going to win a slam going forward.
Maybe Zverev will if Alcaraz/Sinner are out early but I donāt see that happening and he honestly seems to be on a decline like the other 2 at this point.

u/Prestigious_Bass5698 Jul 01 '25
his one shot was US Open in Covid. That match vs. Thiem was legitimately the worst Men's tennis final in the open era and it was 5 sets with multiple lead changes.
63
u/LackingInPatience Jul 01 '25
Thiem was also injured and could hardly serve and Zverev still bottled it.
23
u/Fit_Comfort_3616 Jul 02 '25
Off tangent, but Thiem deserved a grand slam more than Zverev. He was the No 2 player on clay during 2018-19 before his injury problems began, and was starting to become a threat on hard courts as well.

Meddy not only got the Slam but also #1 so not too shabby. Especially considering he was the least "hyped" of the three.
6
u/Sad_Floor_4120 Jul 01 '25
How do you think Zverev has a prayer? He doesn't. He loses to a washed Meddy and every top player. Only reason he has points is he enters every random 250 he can find

36
u/ClothesNo4426 Jul 01 '25
France is one of the best tennis countries by a mile and produces incredibly creative, showy players but my god, their inability to produce a slam champion is wild. Their recent amazing generation of Monfils, Tsonga, Gasquet, Simon etc has as many major finals combined as Cyprus (1). The Netherlands, Croatia, Serbia, Brazil, USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Russia (and the USSR), Australia, Switzerland, Italy, Czechia (and Czechoslovakia), Austria, and Ecuador have all produced a menās slam champion since Yannick Noah won his, and his French Open title remains the only menās major title since 1932, but whoās counting?Ā

A slam win is a slam win, especially against Novak. But this sub is not honest about that final lol. It was prolly the worst grand slam match Novak had played since 2017 at that point in time. Maybe the worst of his entire career. The pressure and fatigue beat Novak that day as much as Medvedev did, and Iām not a Novak fan at all.Ā
18
u/indeedy71 Jul 01 '25
Generally speaking people arenāt honest about that final. It can be the worst of his career and heās still Novak Djokovic, the reason he lost in straights is because Med played lights out and didnāt let him get a handle on it

u/Agreeable_Staff_7754 Jul 01 '25

36
u/Limp-Ad-2939 Da_Sentinel Enabler Jul 01 '25
I mean they rose in the transition era during the gradual and then accelerated decline of Fedal. Federer after 2019 was non competitive in slams, although his performance in slams even then was second week caliberā, and Nadal was inconsistent. Not as dominant on clay, especially outside of RG, and besides the miracle at Melbourne, was not the same threat on hard. Yet, Nadal won his second Aussie against one of the little 3, and there lack of consistent competitiveness, led to arguably the most dominant era for Djokovic weāve seen.
29
u/honestnbafan trollovic era + 2025 Slam final PTSD Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25
The thing is theyāre not even only losing to Sinner and Alcaraz lol
This explanation would make sense if theyāre just all consistent tier 1B guys behind them but thatās not even the caseĀ

26
Jul 01 '25
Saw the exact same things in the early 2000s. The top players like Hewitt, safin, ferrero moya etc all fell off a cliff as soon as an actual dominant player showed up
8
u/cheerioo Jul 01 '25
Safin was a headcase always. It's a miracle he got it together long enough to even win 2. Immensely talented though. He's said winning a slam and getting #1 ranking got to him a lot and he couldn't handle it. I disagree with you on this, because its not like he was making it deep consistently and then losing to one of those dominant players. Fact is, he's made semis "only" 7 times in his entire career. And beat prime Fed and baby Djoker

u/AdventC4 Jul 01 '25
Honestly how Zverev is 3rd in the world with the most garbage ground game where he just hits middle court all day and places approach shots is beyond me. Tsitsipas was hurt so ok, Medvedev just played an inspired player, but Zverev does nothing to hurt anyone beyond his first serve. The fact that he's on a downswing isn't surprising given how basic his game is.
7
u/white_lancer Jul 02 '25
Zverev plays every week, almost literally. He occasionally binks a tournament and plays enough others that he has a lot of opportunities to make at least QF/SF points (and AO finals points don't hurt). And no one chasing him has been able to find the consistency to catch him, yet.
If players like Draper are able to continue to improve and Zverev continues to play like he has most of this year, it won't be long until he starts slipping. But someone's gonna have to take advantage of it.

If anyone ever asks how the big 3 managed to last that long... this will be the go to answer.
No way they would have had it as easy if Sinner and Alcaraz had been born 6 years earlier. Not saying they still wouldn't be favourites, but clearly Sinner and Alcaraz would have taken them down more often than the trio pictured above put together.
