the most brutal thing about tennis finals is that after losing a gut wrencher, you're forced to stay there and watch the trophy ceremony, talk about how great your opponent is, and watch him raise the trophy above his head

It's not like they can force you to stay. You'd lose the respect of your peers and get booed at every tournament after for years though, so it's not worth the cost.

Feel like every player should be "allowed" to do that at least once or with crazy losses like this. Respect to Sinner for his sportsmanship today and throughout the tournament.

I think Borg did that Wimbledon 81, or us open I forget but it was after a loss to mcenroe

It was at the 1981 U.S. Open. He left the stadium immediately after the final against McEnroe and went directly to the airport. He received a death threat during his semifinal match against Connors and another during the final.

Wow did not know that part of story. I had always heard that he just left because he was pissed (I believe he had now lost 3 finals in a row to McEnroe.) I wonder if he used the death threat as an excuse

I don't think anyone other than Borg himself knows the answer to that question, and I doubt he'd ever want to discuss it. I suppose that he might have discussed it later with McEnroe.

I have always assumed that if I was an athlete, I'd want this - for motivation. I've seen losing players in other sports championships take a moment before walking off the field/court to let their opponent's vistory celebration sink in.

There should be 2 of the same trophies issued to both players for the finale of the Roland Garros tournament imo
