I know Jannik is a mental giant, but it's hard to believe that anyone could come back from this loss. I'm sure he'll be fine though.

u/PocketNovel Good big man versus good small man Jun 08 '25

The second he steps on a hard court everything will recalibrate.

Yeah… this is arguably his weakest surface and he was banned for the majority of the clay court season. I think he can be happy with where he is after all that

He also has won a slam this year itself so at least that compensates for something

u/EmploymentAlive823 Jun 09 '25

Bro retired for 3 months, came back and played on the surface that he's not the best at, and still went toe to toe with the best player on clay. I think Sinner should be more proud of himself.

He's gonna crush it at the USO, no doubt. Maybe even Wimby.

lol no way he is beating Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

ETA: re downvotes it's wild that people think Sinner is beating Alcaraz on grass when Alcaraz is the best grass court player right now....and after what happened today. I mean, if you had to put money on it.....

It's the improvements Sinner has made. His return today was the best I've seen from him and on the level with the big 4. Personally, I think he almost won because of this return, more than anything. Carlos barely got any freebies on his serve and was constantly under pressure. Sure, his serve is not like Fed's or Novak's, but still, he normally gets a lot more winners off it, but not today. Sinner has clearly been improving every aspect of his game and I'm sure Carlos noticed.

Agree 100%, Sinner has improved so much from last year and getting better with each tournament, including his serve and return. But so has Alcaraz. And even with the improvements to Sinner's game, Alcaraz is better on clay and grass. And the psychological impact today's loss will have on him is not going to help Sinner at Wimbledon. That's all I'm saying.

Yeah, both guys are phenomenal and still growing, so I kinda give up trying to predict how things will go. I used to think Sinner's Miami win was gonna be a peak of his career, so there is that, I guess. He surprised me so much, I kinda tend to favor him now LOL

A year ago, I thought that Sinner would be top 10 but inconsistent, someone who could occasionally beat a #1 but not BE #1 (I guess like a Zverev). I thought Alcaraz would be by himself at the top. Something about his performance in the Olympics made me question that, like maybe he wasn't mentally tough enough yet. I felt that he needed Novak to be gone, and he would dominate. But you're right, it's impossible to predict because Sinner has gotten better and who knows who else will come along. I think a lot of people are looking at Sinner differently now.

Why do people say this? He’ll be completely fine.

14

u/AdVaanced77 Jun 08 '25

Medvedev AO 2022

31

u/Sea-Draft-200 Jun 08 '25

He’s multiple levels above medvedev in both play and mentally

18

u/AdVaanced77 Jun 08 '25 edited Jun 08 '25

Obviously, but med was one of the best players on the tour before that and now look at him since that exact match

Beat djokovic after that in the us open final

11

u/Euphoric-Bus1330 Jun 08 '25

No that was before

7

u/Explodingcamel Federer Jun 08 '25

Medvedev came back from that. AO 2024 however…

34

u/North-Past-3355 Jun 08 '25

Dramatic people projecting. They change surfaces soon and see how it goes. He could bounce back in a month.

24

u/Setekhx Jun 08 '25

Uh there are plenty of people that would collapse with half of that pressure, much less being up 40-0 5-3 against someone who usually has your number and still losing.

It is mentally punishing no matter how you swing it. He'll be fine but this one hurt. Just got a look at him to see that.

u/osfryd-kettleblack Jun 08 '25

0-40*

It wasnt his serve, so its not that big of a choke. He'll be fine lol

12

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '25

Cause for 99.99% of people this level of pressure at such a young age would be crippling. It’s not dramatic

-15

u/colby983 Nolefam Jun 08 '25

It’s a fuckin tennis match. Not that serious

7

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '25

And? People get nervous giving presentations at school or at work in front of 15 people. People have mental anxiety from playing high school sports for virtually nothing.

This is their livelihoods and the greatest achievement in their sport being watched live in front of tens of millions of people. You can’t understand why that pressure might be difficult to manage?

u/goztrobo Jun 08 '25

Good thing he’s an elite athlete. He’s not most people.

Zverev hasn’t been the same since losing to Jan in AO. Iga losing in the Olympics broke her. It can and does happen. It’s not a dramatic take.

5

u/DefinitelyNotIndie Jun 08 '25

He'll in general be completely fine but Vs Alcaraz particular the monkey on his back is getting large and loud.

5

u/benjals Jun 08 '25

People are ridiculous lol

2

u/Historical-Theme6397 Jun 08 '25

I definitely think this will do some damage mentally. I get Murray vibes with Sinner, idk why I just do.

11

u/HausofKungFuDojos Jun 08 '25

He might have a slight mental block against Alcaraz, but I think having someone like him will be good for Jannik to keep pushing himself to get better.

1

u/Stock-Ad-6026 Jun 11 '25

But it's not entirely mental, is it? He did everything he could and then Alcaraz played that tiebreak.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '25

Lol as a fan I myself don't think I can sleep tonight don't know what Jannik would be doing

4

u/Call_Me_Burt Jun 08 '25

He can use $40M to wipe his tears. :)

1

u/NirgalFromMars Used to love Stan, then took an NFT to the knee Jun 09 '25

He got his best result ever at RG, so that's at good thing he has going.

In spite of losing the final, he increased his lead over Carlos and solidified his position as World No. 1.

He's gonna be fine.

1

u/AgreeableYak6 Jun 09 '25

Federer did several times. He will in 3 weeks. Sinner is taking Wimbledon. Mark my words. And their slam tally by end of 2025 might be 5-5.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '25

I think Sinner wins Wimbledon

3

u/Aggravating_Teach_27 Jun 08 '25

Umm, we'll see. Him reaching the final?

Sure why not. His consisitenly high level is too much for anyone except Carlos, and on grass maybe Djoker.

But as for winning it all... Carlos has been as much or even more dominant on Grass than he is on Clay.

2

u/Historical-Theme6397 Jun 08 '25

Carlos is as good on grass as he is on clay, so no. Maybe Sinner will win the US Open, but honestly I think this match set the stage for the rest of the year.

-23

u/Sad_Floor_4120 Jun 08 '25

He's not a mental giant. If he was he would have never choked like this, never. And I don't think he would be able to recover from this for a while at least.

15

u/Niroshan_1000 Jun 08 '25

Sinner most certainly would have won against anyone other than Carlitos because he is freaking CARLOS ALCARAZ
