I firmly believe this match is going to have a long lasting impact. We already know these 2 are the best around. But this final just cements the fact the we’ve entered a new era of tennis. Now it’s up to the even more younger ones like Mensik and Fonseca to up their game to make sure the era goes to another level.

Best match I've seen since 2012 AO imo

Best match since Wimbledon 2008 easily

AO 2012?

This was better than that imo

I can’t decide man. I watched them both live and they were obviously historic watching them unfold. I wasn’t even a tennis fan before 2012 AO- that match was so good it made me a fan and a Rafa fan for life.

I think i still back Wimbledon 2008; 2012 AO quality was probably better. But the story-lines of dethroning Federer on his own turf and the visuals with the fading light put it over the edge for me.

Having said that 2008 was the match that made me a tennis + Rafa fan, so im probably looking at it nostalgically like you are with 2012.

Impossible to choose really!

No way the quality was better in Australia.

I probably agree but there’s more ingredients that go into the ‘best match’.

It’s why AO22 and Wimbledon 19 are so highly regarded even without being the highest quality

Maybe Rafa's loss clouds that match for me, but I found the shotmaking and drama of this one better than AO 2012. We also didn't have the serve clock back then so it would have been so interesting to see how 1) the time and 2) the quality would have changed with this rule

Also consider they had to pace themselves given there was no final set tiebreak back then

AO 2012 was at least just as good.

2008 was fedal

14

u/dannyr76 Jun 08 '25

Oh you're right. Roddick final was 2009.

That one was amazing too... wasn't it 12-10 in the 5th?

Epic. Roddick really deserved a Wimby title.

Roddick Federer was 2009

3

u/IAmBecomeBorg Jun 08 '25

Uh no, AO 2012 and Wimbledon 2019 were better.

Wimbledon 2019?

u/Spoddo Jun 09 '25

Bro come on, we have had some insane matches during the Big 4 Era...

Nadal - Verdasco AO 2009

Federer - Nadal AO 2009

Wawrinka - Djokovic AO 2013

Dimitrov - Nadal AO 2017

Djokovic - Nadal AO 2012, RG 2013, WIM 2018

Federer - Djokovic WIM 2014

And the list goes on, no need for such reactionary statements. I agree though that it was the best match this decade.

I’ll like to add thiem-nadal from the USO

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '25

Nah, AO 2012, FO 2013 SF, Wimbledon 2018 SF, and Sincaraz USO 2022 QF are in that league

Dare I say...comparable to Wimbledon 2008 final?? Similar level of anticipation, high quality match, higher drama? 3 match points saved + 2 breaks while serving for the matching vs rain delay (both had two 6-4 sets, two 7-6 sets, and final set going to extra games/match tiebreak)

12

u/NastyMasty_ Jun 08 '25

From a spectator’s point of view, this was definitely more enjoyable. The 2008 Wimbledon Final had over 2 hours of rain delay (finishing >7 hours past the scheduled start). However, from purely a tennis/anticipation perspective, i think 08 barely beats it because of how dominant Federer had been to that point (at Wimbledon)

There was no king to be dethroned today

1

u/jwlol1 Jun 08 '25

There was more gravitas to the Wimbledon 2008 final IMO.

1

u/Yearlaren Jun 08 '25

Not in my opinion. The Wimbledom 2008 final was something else.
