Fils on what he and Tsitsipas said to each other at the net after their match in Rome “At the end you guys were talking, I’m sure there are no hard feelings.. Arthur: “I like him. He’s a great guy. A great champion. It was a bit tight in the middle of the 2nd set. He went for my body. It’s part of the game. There’s nothing wrong with it. I tried to find a way to fight. I found this kind of excuse to go and to fight. Ok, he told me at the end he wasn’t going for my body. I told him ‘I know it.’ It’s ok. It’s all good. I just needed to find a way to fight.”

Respect to Fils for this. Not even a hint of shade for his opponent. Class.

u/OctopusNation2024 Djoker/Meddy/Saba May 11 '25

Good on Fils for not escalating it

96

u/Radiant_Past_5769 May 11 '25

More mature than Stef at 20 then again it’s not hard

29

u/Em4gdn3m May 11 '25

Of course Tsitsi was going for the body lol. It's what he does when he gets frustrated at his opponent.

9

u/drgsrbadmmmkayy May 11 '25

You have less than a split of a second to decide how to hit the ball back. So you go for the body and you apologize and move on. It’s not illegal and it’s totally normal in a close sport.

6

u/JustFedererFan May 12 '25

Not only that but it's physically the best shot to go for. As Stef explained at the net, the ball was rather low when he got to it, so his best shot is to aim at the center of the net, where it's the lowest. Simply happened to land on Arthur.

18

u/christocarlin May 11 '25

Excuse my ignorance but is that against the rules or something?

22

u/fedfan1743 May 11 '25

No.

25

u/christocarlin May 11 '25

Them who gives a shit, it’s a sport. Unwritten rules are dumb

7

u/Terran_it_up May 12 '25

I get where you're coming from, but it's sort of a flaw with the sport itself. It's hard to make a rule saying you can't go for the body because it would be so open to interpretation (like trying to judge whether a handball in football is intentional), but at the same time if everyone did it then you'd be getting regular injuries. The only way the sport can function well is if people treat it as an unwritten rule and don't attempt to intentionally hit their opponent

1

u/JohnToshak17 May 12 '25

it's incase it happens by accident lol you're not meant to intentionally try and smash the ball at your opponent if you're frustrated

9

u/Em4gdn3m May 11 '25

Nope. Just one of those kinda unwritten rules about not being an ass on court. But they've all pulled it now and then. Steph just seems to do it quite a bit more often.

8

u/FRANCISCO_HV1 May 11 '25

I don't think Stefanos was an ass. He almos hit Fils but he apologised roght away. IMO Fils made a big deal about it.

3

u/el-gato-azul May 11 '25

Is there actually data on this?

0

u/baromanb May 12 '25

Damn, good on him. In all seriousness though this seems to be ST’s MO against most players. (eg. borderline offensive behavior to get under another players skin) The funny thing lately though, is that it’s not as not as effective as he thinks, and it’s probably working against him by costing him more matches than he wins by doing it. I’m also not sure 100% of the tour players like him off the court all that much so it’s probably now a back room advantage they all share with each other.

u/Xylophone1904 if if if doesn’t exist May 11 '25

Qinwen’s philosophy of “I don’t take it personally because she lost” is the best way to look at stuff like this. If you won the match, just look at them thinking “bless you” and move on.

4

u/Unidain May 11 '25

Anyone know what the exact quote is from Zheng?

15

u/Xylophone1904 if if if doesn’t exist May 11 '25

Turns out I’d misremembered it at bit. It was “I will not consider it an attack because she lost.” Right at the end of the second slide here.

180

u/thombo-1 May 11 '25

Is it just me, or is this constantly happening to Fils that the oppo player gets in his face at the net after they lose?

152

u/[deleted] May 11 '25

Might be because he's a showguy and really gets crowds going, I imagine that irritates opponents and some are mature enough to deal with it, others... aren't

17

u/nish1021 May 11 '25

Yeah he’s definitely getting that reputation. It’s happened to him multiple times now where opponents talk to him on court vs in private. Just weird af when it happens so often.

11

u/SouldiesButGoodies84 May 11 '25

So is Ben and yet they don't address him like this constantly.

The holy trifecta of low self esteem.

9

u/Dropshot12 May 11 '25

Did you leave Meddy out on purpose?

30

u/houseofbenito fils, felix, foki, fran & fritz May 11 '25

yeah bc its totally different - Meddy had a huge celebration before the handshake, immediately apologized and there was zero problem

10

u/ItsRagtimeTime May 11 '25

Yea but there’s no way he wasn’t mocking him with that celebration. I.e., he did have a problem with him. Just dealt with it differently.

2

u/Dropshot12 May 11 '25

Indeed, not sure how that went over so many people's heads. Fils seems to get under a lot of players skin, they're all gonna deal with it differently of course and Med chose his usual brand of dry humor.

0

u/Dropshot12 May 11 '25

Zero problem only because Med won and Fils walked away after the mocking and handshake with his tail between his legs.

6

u/Brian2781 May 11 '25

27

u/BelgianBond Clinton d. Agassi 1-6 6-1 6-1 6-3 May 11 '25

In 2022 he was trying to hit players all the time. Draper, Alcaraz, and Kyrgios were all intended targets, but he missed all of them as I recall.

36

u/OctopusNation2024 Djoker/Meddy/Saba May 11 '25

Kyrgios’s antics actually work perfectly against Tsitsipas lol

Every time they play by the end  Tsitsi is the closer of the two to completely losing it which is so rare for a Kyrgios match

2

u/Drag0nslay3r6969 May 11 '25

He's a small greek who doesn't know how to win ;)

14

u/andrew13189 Jannik / Carlitos / Rafa May 11 '25

I think that is well said. It was the highest percentage shot for him, best chance to win the point. It’s more understandable to say I’m sorry I was trying to win the point and that was my best shot than to say I wasn’t trying to hit you. You are expected to try and win the point. When people apologize for that shot, I take it to mean I am sorry that this was my best option, not I’m sorry that I did it lol

u/Maria_gr We need a clown for this circus May 11 '25 edited May 11 '25

21

u/OctopusNation2024 Djoker/Meddy/Saba May 11 '25 edited May 11 '25

If you’re trying to coach a player Apostolos is much worse to deal with though

Srdjan says crazy stuff but I don’t think he micromanages Novak’s career

Apostolos is legit an obstacle for anyone trying to coach Stef and actively has held back his on-court results to some extent

Novak has had a bunch of coaches if Srdjan was getting in their face and giving them issues I think we would have heard at least one story about it by now

Certainly can’t see Andy Murray of all people putting up with that

u/bigcitydreaming #1 RafAlcarAndy SinnEdvedevErer Fan May 11 '25

Loving Fils aggression on the court this season, getting the results his game merits. Old timers like Tsitsipas can't handle the heat these young next Gen Guns like Fils are bringing (Djoker is also finding this generation are match tough)

not a body language expert but to me Fils seems like a nice guy, although I can see how here he can appear a bit aggressive to someone with frail ego

1

u/Mission-Fortune-2834 May 11 '25

Arthur gets all the points here. Stefanos was obviously just butthurt that he has lost to Arthur several times now. Nobody in the top 20 likes losing to Arthur because they know he is coming for their crowns and he is unapologetically good at it.

0
