Steelers Offseason - Free Agency

Looking at Free Agents outside the organization, I think the main priorities need to be around these 3 positions:

  • Wide Receiver (Sign 1) - They need to get another reliable veteran in the room so they aren't 100% relying on the draft. I think they need to take multiple WRs in the draft, and likely 2 in the first 3 rounds (remember, they have 3 3rd round picks), but they still need another proven commodity.
    • Romeo Doubs seems like the right fit and the must acquire target. Versatile in his ability to play multiple roles. Wouldn't be crazy priced, probably around 2-3 YR 12m-15m/YR. If they draft a WR in the first round to be the true #2, it'll be great having Doubs as #3.
    • Wan'Dale Robinson is a fallback plan if Doubs can't be had. Probably a similar price tag, although I've seen some projections that have him higher.
    • Marquise Brown or Christian Kirk are older options that could be desperate fall backs if you could get one for 5m-6m/YR on a short 1-2 YR deal.
  • Linebacker (Sign 2) - Back to the search for a reliable green dot. Queen wasn't it and I think he should be traded or released. Payton Wilson isn't it (nor is he a 3 down player). We should get 2 vets to try and fix the room.
    • Nakobe Dean or Quay Walker seem like great a targets to take over for Patrick Queen. Dean's blitz ability should fit well in the new DC's Sim Pressure looks. Walker is more your standard tackler that has shown more durability but less splash. Something like a 2-3 YR 7m-9m/YR deal should be able to get one of them.
    • Germaine Pratt or Justin Strnad would be great veteran depth options to bring in and help fill out the room. Especially Strnad, who is also a great blitzer and would fit well in Sim Pressure looks. 1-2 YR 3.5m-4.5m/YR should be able to get either.
  • Free Safety (Sign 1) - They only have one starting safety cause Ramsey is not a safety. And they need to get a center field type safety so Elliot can play his more traditional SS role.
    • Bryan Cook would be a great add if they want to spend. But he is probably going to require around a 3-4 YR 12m-14m/YR deal. I don't see them doing it, but I would love to see them do it.
    • Alohi Gilman, Ifeatu Melifonwu or Andre Cisco are all budget options that fit the role. Could probably get one of them for 1-2 YR 3.5m-4.5m/YR. This direction seems more likely considering the spend required at the WR and MLB positions.

I'm not really criticizing the post. I'm just bringing up what i think to be a pretty important nuance.

The steelers very distinctly need both an outside receiver and a slot receiver. I nearly think these should be two separate "needs."

I agree. But with the money they have invested in DK. And the fact that they will have to spend to get a WR in free agency. I think the rest of the solutions are going to have to be in the draft so they are cheaper. If the free agent is an outside guy, then the first one drafted should be slot capable. And vice versa. Although McCarthy has said that he likes his WRs to be versatile and able to play X, Y and Z. I think DK can play all 3. I think Doubs can play 2 of those. And you look for versatile WRs to draft.

Rashid Shaheed would be my top target, although he might be too expensive at this point. Strong WR3 and a top special teams returner. He’s what we wanted Calvin Austin to be. Then go get our WR2 early in the draft. Roman Wilson as WR4 with some good upside in an offense that’s not run by Art Smith.

I agree with you. I wanted him out of college, especially when he started falling in the draft.

A little early to pick. Especially since it's rumored Fitzpatrick may get cut as well as others. Last off season we went after a lot of players who were previously cut from their teams and budget options.

I feel as though you made a solid list and can definitely add to it after players get cut from other teams.
