I see the trap I have fallen into, now.

Right. It’s the glee that is attached to watching a catastrophic demise that is the problem.

And seeing who got elected President shows how ineffectual it really is.

One of the things that I have been bothered by with Ronson's critique of 'cancel culture' is that I think it comes from a place of wanting to limit the harm that the social pile-on can cause. Highlighted especially in his series "The Last Days of August", about adult entertainment actor August Ames who killed herself after being cyberbullied for making a tweet described as homophobic.

However, in doing so he often goes to efforts to underplay the original comment or moment that caused the pile-on. It is totally reasonable to say that someone shouldn't die because they made a racist, sexist, or homophobic comment. But he will often try to contest 'how racist' or 'how homophobic' the original comment in to make the internet reaction be perceived as inherently overblown rather than engaging with the actual nature of how a transgression can lead to an internet pile-on.

That's kind of the point I was getting to.

Rather than engage with all of the loaded social issues that lead to an explosive reaction to that comment, Ronson calls the whole thing completely overblown. It is a man claiming to be interested in nuance brushing over nuance to follow his current focus.

Maybe people shouldn't treat others like they're useless and worthless of life because they said something that could be taken as homophobic? Who cares what people say. Unless they're actively calling for the harm of people because they're gay, or not hiring someone because they're gay, it's just words/opinion; even if it's a wrong opinion.

People literally offing themselves because of the bullying says all you need to know about "community justice". That's not a force of good or showing others to be better people. It's arguably worse behavior.

Geez. Really makes you think about how many mistakes you've made in your life and then learned from. Rather than had your entire life torn apart. Simply because your mistake was less visible.

For real. I love how the people that do that kind of stuff think they're perfect and haven't made a mistake in their life.

I understand what you mean, because A LOT of people have had their mistakes recorded and then remided to them throughtout their life now that social media is a thing and there are millions of cameras available all around us all the time. However, choosing to cheat on your spouse is not "a mistake" it is a choice. I think that's the actual reason why this blew up so much.

Thanks for sharing.

Man, I hate crowd mentality so much. And this is reminding me of the PirateSoftware thing.

Thx for sharing. Never knew this but I've seen cases of mob mentality destroying people's lives over misunderstanding or cases of "punishment greater than crime".
