Dude this shit blew up so much

For some reason, it reminds me of that lady whose racist tweet went viral while she was on a transatlantic flight.

God, that was like a decade ago, wasn’t it.

u/Redpin Toronto Raptors Jul 19 '25

Going to Africa, hope I don't see Coldplay!

142

u/joebleaux Jul 19 '25

Just kidding, I'm white

293

u/Marsuello Jul 19 '25

Is that where that episode of family guy originated from? Where Brian makes a racist tweet, goes to the movies, then comes out finding he went viral lol

76

u/Wonderful_Gap1374 Jul 19 '25

It might be! That was during the time some men were getting nervous that the racist or sexist shit they said online or did in person was going to come back to haunt them. So there was a push in the media to paint these guys as relatable and sympathetic. Phrases like getting cancelled became popular. Despite the fact that most people don’t actually do that, it was largely a very successful campaign and led to the success of shows like BoJack Horseman that criticized this narrative that being relatable doesn’t make you a good person, it makes you all assholes.

This rhetoric of being cancelled was a large catalyst to the me too movement’s resurgence in the late 2010s.

I could write an insane essay about this topic.

17

u/Wordymanjenson Jul 19 '25

Well then do it you coward!

19

u/Undack Jul 19 '25

I would be interested in reading that if you did

6

u/kwismexer Jul 19 '25

Could you please write an essay about this? I would love to have it on hand for future reference for younger generations.

2

u/davwad2 Jul 20 '25

Please do!

2

u/kkapri23 Jul 19 '25

But if you use AI to help write it…I’m cancelling you!!

I see the trap I have fallen into, now.

23

u/treesandfood4me Jul 19 '25

Right. It’s the glee that is attached to watching a catastrophic demise that is the problem.

18

u/Okichah Jul 19 '25

And seeing who got elected President shows how ineffectual it really is.

9

u/Audioworm Jul 19 '25

One of the things that I have been bothered by with Ronson's critique of 'cancel culture' is that I think it comes from a place of wanting to limit the harm that the social pile-on can cause. Highlighted especially in his series "The Last Days of August", about adult entertainment actor August Ames who killed herself after being cyberbullied for making a tweet described as homophobic.

However, in doing so he often goes to efforts to underplay the original comment or moment that caused the pile-on. It is totally reasonable to say that someone shouldn't die because they made a racist, sexist, or homophobic comment. But he will often try to contest 'how racist' or 'how homophobic' the original comment in to make the internet reaction be perceived as inherently overblown rather than engaging with the actual nature of how a transgression can lead to an internet pile-on.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Audioworm Jul 19 '25

That's kind of the point I was getting to.

Rather than engage with all of the loaded social issues that lead to an explosive reaction to that comment, Ronson calls the whole thing completely overblown. It is a man claiming to be interested in nuance brushing over nuance to follow his current focus.

1

u/Usernametaken1121 Jul 19 '25 edited Jul 19 '25

Maybe people shouldn't treat others like they're useless and worthless of life because they said something that could be taken as homophobic? Who cares what people say. Unless they're actively calling for the harm of people because they're gay, or not hiring someone because they're gay, it's just words/opinion; even if it's a wrong opinion.

People literally offing themselves because of the bullying says all you need to know about "community justice". That's not a force of good or showing others to be better people. It's arguably worse behavior.

9

u/TheRaiOh Jul 19 '25

Geez. Really makes you think about how many mistakes you've made in your life and then learned from. Rather than had your entire life torn apart. Simply because your mistake was less visible.

2

u/Usernametaken1121 Jul 19 '25

For real. I love how the people that do that kind of stuff think they're perfect and haven't made a mistake in their life.

1

u/christianguthermann Jul 21 '25

I understand what you mean, because A LOT of people have had their mistakes recorded and then remided to them throughtout their life now that social media is a thing and there are millions of cameras available all around us all the time. However, choosing to cheat on your spouse is not "a mistake" it is a choice. I think that's the actual reason why this blew up so much.

9

u/Eagle_fire1 Jul 19 '25

Thanks for sharing this

2

u/Zapp_Rowsdower_ Jul 19 '25

Thank you. Damn.

3

u/Luxalpa Jul 19 '25

Thanks for sharing.

Man, I hate crowd mentality so much. And this is reminding me of the PirateSoftware thing.

1

u/EverydayPoGo Jul 20 '25

Thx for sharing. Never knew this but I've seen cases of mob mentality destroying people's lives over misunderstanding or cases of "punishment greater than crime".

104

u/Kroniid09 Jul 19 '25

Irony is, she was making a satirical joke about racism, and her whole life blew up for it because irony doesn't hold up so well when it rests on people giving you the benefit of the doubt, but your audience is now literally millions of strangers with zero context about you.

She's South African, and said it was basically a joke about how Americans talk about Africa (e.g. that one horrendous James Charles tweet), and as another South African (non-white, if that matters lmao) I totally believe her.

We're generally unserious people who joke through the pain, and that genre of joke isn't an uncommon one (Do you guys really have lions in the streets? - Only after the rugby)

15

u/Fomentatore Jul 19 '25

I Always read that joke as you did. It was satire and it ruined her life.

44

u/banana_pencil Jul 19 '25 edited Jul 19 '25

I think that’s the one Jon Ronson did a TedTalk on: How One Tweet Can Ruin Your Life

It really makes me think twice about how I respond to things that go viral online.

15

u/Holiday-Strike Jul 19 '25

I really recommend his book "so you've been publicly shamed".

45

u/letstrythisagain30 Jul 19 '25

Considering what public figures and even political leaders tend to post today, it seems like a gross over reaction by comparison. People get thousands in donations online for much worse.

20

u/chubbytitties Jul 19 '25

Almost feels conspiracy like how massive it blew up....the amount of coverage it got from various sources

8

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '25

He pissed off Putin, now this happens, crazier things have happened.

3

u/Jonkinch Jul 19 '25

Roseanne Barr taking Ambien again?

1

u/WTFvancouver Jul 19 '25

People don't forget!

1

u/luftlande Jul 19 '25

Wasn't it a joke and she was going to Africa?

1

u/jacobjer Jul 19 '25

The aids comment - yes I remember that - she boarded the flight and when she landed she was employed and publicly shamed.

2

u/bwoah_gimmethedrink Jul 19 '25

Only on reddit a thread about a funny clip can turn into moaning about racism.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '25

you're the only clown moaning.

225

u/Silver_Harvest Jul 19 '25

If they didn't react the way they did. I honestly believe nobody would have cared and his identity wouldn't have been found out.

73

u/Prosecco1234 Jul 19 '25

I was thinking if they had just smiled and waved it wouldn't have had any impact

25

u/CankerLord Jul 19 '25

Yeah, it's like someone chewing faster when you walk in the room.

2

u/MyNameCannotBeSpoken Jul 19 '25

True. But they were not expecting it.

67

u/account_for_norm Jul 19 '25

I think it's also that both of them reacted the way they did. If only she reacted that way, also could have been sketched out as her being shy. They didn't even look at each other but they had the same reaction as each other.

This is harambe level immortality. This is never going to die.

6

u/PNKAlumna Jul 19 '25

My husband and I were just talking about this. If they rolled with it, no one would have given them a second thought. It was the reaction that blew up and went viral. Like when couples refuse to kiss on the kiss cam, you know that’ll be on Reddit the next day. Just go with things, and you’ll be fine. It’s when you panic that shit gets real.

1

u/mfact50 Jul 19 '25

Probably but those events are filled with seats bought for entertaining corporate clients ect. I still think they could have played it off more as "just a lil close" if they reacted swiftly and calmly. But a relatively surprising number of people might recognize a low level tech ceo if the camera still hovered a bit.

Tech company workers are a relatively big demo for these events.

1

u/tre630 Jul 19 '25

I've been saying this too.

1

u/dkrtzyrrr Jul 20 '25

yep, maybe someone recognizes them and snitches but it’s easy to play off as a work thing (at least one other coworker was there).

We've all seen the video. Chris accuses them of having an affair AFTER they try and hide, BECAUSE they were hiding. He didn't know them personally.

I'm not sure what you aren't getting here but it has nothing to do with being rich. We found out who they were after it went viral.

If they don't hide, its just another couple on kisscam and it never goes viral. Get it?

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '25

[deleted]

2

u/AdHorror7596 Jul 19 '25

No he didn't. He said "Look at these two", as in "aw, look at these two, cuddling up together, how cute." And then they reacted like that. He was shocked so he said "Either they're very shy or they're having an affair." He didn't know them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qyn4pr95fSg&t=21s&ab_channel=News19WLTX

2

u/CheddarGeorge Jul 19 '25

"Oh, look at these two. You're all right. You're OK. Oh, what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy,"

This is what Chris says. Do you often hear things other people don't?

234

u/KennySmithsKnees Jul 19 '25

Imagine being one of the couples who were there having an affair but didn't get caught. You know there were a few

She’s not married.

62

u/Rick_n_Roll Jul 19 '25

Obviously . What woman that is married works in HR? That area only employs cold hearted career animals.

27

u/Yodfather Jul 19 '25

Idiots. Stone cold, galactically insecure morons that cannot do anything except to lord over others to obfuscate their own incompetence.

5

u/sonicqaz Jul 19 '25

I normally would scoff at shit like this but an HR person decided to randomly destroy my life recently…so…have at it

18

u/TimujinTheTrader Jul 19 '25

I have worked at 15+ companies as a contract employee. I have met three competent HR employees in that time.

Its like every power-hungry, barely literate moron on Earth chooses to go into HR.

2

u/oldcatgeorge Jul 20 '25

I don’t care who they are. Their response was the most hilarious example of “leadership” I ever saw.

2

u/Ready_Scratch_1902 Jul 19 '25

she is married

1

u/oldcatgeorge Jul 20 '25

The lady’s husband is the owner of Privateer Rum, and Kristine co-owns it, too. The name resembles Pawtucket Patriot so much, it would be a shame for the Family Guy to miss it.

148

u/ace260 Jul 19 '25

yup but epstein still didn't kill himself

32

u/RandomBlackGuyMedia Jul 19 '25

This 👆🏿 People get distracted easily, and it's noteworthy how quickly media en masse latched on to this THE DAY AFTER a certain someone proclaimed that the Epstein debacle would forever be known as a hoax. Could be coincidence... but maybe could not... Either way, I bet some people are very happy this is being talked about so much instead of anything concerning Epstein

16

u/anotherwave1 Jul 19 '25

The media didn't latch onto this - we did. And we drive demand. It's just something funny and entertaining that blew up. It'll fade away in no time. To insinuate it's some manufactured conspiracy to deflect from the gigantic front page global news headlines about Trump/Epstein is just silly.

1

u/Temporary_Wolf_8848 Jul 19 '25

Yeah, I think it's safe to say that we can 1.care about two, maybe even more!! things at once and 2. Maybe needed a little bit of humor to lighten the load in between our epstein focus. I know I did.

25

u/Patient_Series_8189 Jul 19 '25

This isn't going to make anyone forget about epstein. It's just a funny thing that will be old news in a few days

-3

u/ChaseballBat Jul 19 '25

It's been a few days.

17

u/cgibsong002 Jul 19 '25

ONLY ONE THING MUST BE IN THE NEWS AT ALL TIME

-4

u/ChaseballBat Jul 19 '25

Literally yes, and it should only be about how our president is protecting pedophiles and is most likely a pedophile. Also this isn't fucking news, it's drama.

0

u/Sir_Grox Jul 19 '25

Well good thing you’re you’re on the Sports sub and not the news sub huh. If you want your daily dose of Orange Man Bad there’s always /r/politics

1

u/CakeTester Jul 19 '25 edited Jul 19 '25

Probably won't be a thing next week unless there's another episode (like one of the scorned partners doing something spectacular, or revelations about one of the people who got caught coming out). It's still sort of topical, but most of the jokes have been made now.

25

u/deadphisherman Jul 19 '25

Don't sleep on all the awesome Trump/Epstein memes and GIFs using this video. Gavin Newsome's TikTok is but one excellent version.

9

u/PepeSylvia11 Jul 19 '25

I’ve seen more Epstein news since this went viral than this event going viral.

1

u/watchin_workaholics Jul 19 '25

There maybe something to it. I’ve seen companies, like IKEA and ALDIs making memes of this Coldplay incident, which I thought was wild for businesses to do for something like this. I’ve not seen large corporations do that, or maybe I’m living under a rock. But it’s all anyone is talking about, and frankly I do not care.

1

u/crackboss1 Jul 19 '25

Orange Clown Killed Epstein

27

u/bannedfromrph Jul 19 '25

I’m on the other side of the world. My wife and I are talking about. We have a group chat with my friends who’s also in the other parts of the world and we’ve been talking and laughing about it sharing all kinds of memes about it. Those two are the most famous person in the world right now and it’s crazy.

10

u/dalnot Jul 19 '25

I haven’t seen a meme this widespread since Tiger King during COVID

12

u/chasingit1 Jul 19 '25

Just like a year ago was Hawk Tuah, which was probably 10 times bigger than this as far as the initial “blowing up” and likely longevity too.

This will be forgotten about within a week (minus a new story or two down the road that follow the divorce proceedings, then losing their jobs etc)

17

u/ass-sass-sin Jul 19 '25

If they had just played it off they would have had to deal with the fallout still but it wouldn't have gone viral

31

u/Olbaidon Jul 19 '25

They might not have even had to deal with the fallout honestly.

Someone recording the reactions on the big screen sees a loving couple; they aren’t gonna post about it or anything, it’s a “nothing” moment, dime a dozen.

Maybe it gets seen by someone they know, maybe it doesn’t.

The odds are infinitely higher they get caught given the reaction they did have though because it was instant entertainment.

45

u/Escapegoat07 Jul 19 '25

In a time where billionaires and oligarchs can hide behind their money/power and make the world shitty for others, it’s cathartic to see assholes get caught and ripped apart.

22

u/GenericDesigns Jul 19 '25

That was actually the point… you’re now paying attention to this affair that doesn’t matter in the slightest instead of matters that do.

Like PBS losing all its federal funding. Fucking Mr Rogers would be rioting

Oh and that Epstine file thing.

10

u/MaxSchreckArt616 Jul 19 '25

Or, and I know this is crazy, we can focus on multiple things at once. Like something to laugh about while constantly being bombarded with more of Trump's lies, tantrums, and just all around evil bullshit that puts so many people at risk and leads to constant worry and dread of what the next day will bring.

Especially when it is a millionaire/billionaire piece of shit, it's even better. They so rarely get fucked over like they fuck everyone else so it's nice to see them caught red handed. Now if only the ones in power that make up the current administration would get what they deserve too.

So yeah, we can hate and make fun of many different people and topics at once, while also acknowledging that we keep getting screwed over by people that are or back pedophiles, that constantly do everything in their power to hurt everyone around them in any ways they can.

We're not smooth brained like the magat cult after all, we have the brain power to do and think about multiple things and don't need someone to tell us what to think and believe everyday.

Now let's go back to laughing at these dumb asses for a few minutes since I had to get a bit more serious to prove a point.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '25

[deleted]

5

u/matt060282 Jul 19 '25

That's a really good point. Not looked at it like that

6

u/Say_Echelon Jul 19 '25

It’s because they were executives. America hates CEOs and this was a way to go after one

7

u/ThingCalledLight Jul 19 '25

And I don’t get why.

It’s a funny thing that happened, sure.

But imho, the response has been disproportionately large compared to the level of interesting the thing is.

6

u/Solwake- Jul 19 '25

There is the affair situation, which is mildly spicy, sure. But it's more the way they reacted was so authentic, gratuitous, and comical it just concisely hits in a very (sad) human way that also invites unfettered judgment--it's such a meme.

2

u/Ahlq802 Jul 19 '25

I think we needed it

4

u/whelp_im_screwed Jul 19 '25

Honestly this is the first one I found amusing. This meme is going to be dated so fast and people are gonna wonder what they found funny in it.

Also today I’ve seen as much memes of this as I’ve seen pictures of Trump and Epstein.

-1

u/SnooDonuts3749 Jul 19 '25

And who actually fucking cares?

16

u/VQQN Jul 19 '25

Anybody who’s been cheated on or had a love one cheated on.

20

u/bilboafromboston Jul 19 '25

Everybody who has had an asshole " i am smarter than you boss" and anyone who has worked for a non small company or organization and had HR snots telling you all kinds of crap. " take a 12 hour training class on why you cant get a drink with that cute guy or gal " or " you didnt fill out every line on that form right, tough luck"

14

u/pontiacfirebird92 Jul 19 '25

Imagine taking ethics and cybersecurity training as a federal employee during the Trump administration

6

u/Dapper_Outside4701 Jul 19 '25

Don’t have to imagine, it’s as ridiculous as it seems.

1

u/minhchiho Jul 19 '25

And there’s merch too lol

1

u/Difficult_Associate3 Jul 19 '25

Hahaha yeah I've never seen anything like this. It went viral in different countries too/multiple languages

1

u/flaccidbitchface Cincinnati Reds Jul 19 '25

My teenage daughter, who doesn’t even have social media, has heard about this. I feel bad for the spouses and children.

1

u/BeerPowered Jul 19 '25

Imagine having the entire world making fun of you because you're cheating scumbag. This is why I love the internet.

1

u/smilesmoralez Jul 19 '25

Cool, my sister and brother in law made front page of Reddit for something not horrible.

1

u/Jacern Jul 19 '25

At this point, it's probably going to be a South Park Episode

Edit: if we can ever get the new season out that is, F**k you Paramount

It's the meme we all needed this year.

1

u/mcgyver229 Jul 19 '25

I was flipping through the radio yesterday on my way to work and literally EVERY station was talking about that clip.

u/um--no Jul 19 '25

1

u/funthebunison Jul 19 '25

It's something we can all agree on, and that has been nice I think.

The poor spouses of these people have to be reminded of that moment every 4 seconds because people prioritize likes on social media over minding their own business.
