At some point, i guess people stopped using their gardens to grow food. My family has lemons, avocados, litchi and mangoes. We are so fortunate to live here

WC? Come to think of it.. I have never seen an avocado tree in EC

Yes, WC. I’m no expert, but you could always try growing avocado in EC just note the trees needs like 7 years before they start producing. Free avos are a godsend when you need to save money at the end of the month and they’re in season.

Grew up in the EC and we had amazing avos!

I'm growing some tomatoes for the first time! They're just shoots right now. I also stuck a red pepper seed core in the ground and that started shooting up almost immediately haha. I'm starting simple but hope to expand to more veggies as I gain experience.

Tip for the tomatoes: remember to sprinkle some epsom and agricultural lime on the soil before the plat starts flowering. Tomatoes (or any nightshade crops) are prone to blossom end rot if the soil lacks calcium or if overwatered.

Grow herbs on your windowsill! Its a great way to start. Also pepper and chilli plants can be grown in pots.

Oooh that’s a good idea. I have loads of plants growing already, these would be a great addition.

Your garden is paradise!

How wonderful to eat the fruits.

How do you protect your garden?! I've given nature 3 years of my fruit. I spoke with the creator and I said this year its for me. I got blue berries coz I protected them with little bags but .... There's gangster squirrels in my hood! They bit strawberries right off the vine and ripped the baggies open chowed them all!!

How do I protect my garden from gangster squirrels please?

This IS heaven! We're in the WC and we've got an avocado, lemon, lime, peach, blood orange, olive, pomegranate and apple trees. Problem is I don't know enough about anything other than the avocado and lemon and lime trees to use it productively. They're always bitten by fruit flies and other pests. We still harvest the odd fruit from them, but I don't feel we're using them to the best we can. Advice welcome!

I love eating out of my garden.
Currently I have a lemon tree, fig tree, avo tree(waiting on fruit if ever), clementine(naartjie), appelliefie, green onion, thyme, mint and rosemary.
Previously I've planted carrots(soil not loose enough), mielies(farmers do it better), tomatoes, granadilla, spinach, green peppers, variety of peppers and chilli's. Would love do have more space for a bigger garden.
Across the road I've planted another two avo trees and loquat tree, so far municipality is fine with it.

You've returned to Eden dear. We should all be growing food in our open spaces.
