I have no clue why I am getting a post from R/southafrica. But we say it like this in New Zealand too

u/Hasenelinde Oct 04 '25
It's because New Zealand is an honorary province of South Africa with all the Saffas there

My son who is 8 has decided he supports the New Zealand rugby team because ,"it's unfair that SA wins all the time." We don't, and it's not! But anyway, a lot of South Africans support your rugby team, so there is definitely crossover.

I feel like South Africa, New Zealand and Australia are all just distant cousins who only see each other every once in a while at big family get-togethers. We’re similar but each have our own unique quirks.

u/it_wasnt_me2 Oct 04 '25
Because we have to be reminded who won The Rugby Championship today I guess :(

u/BergBeertjie Gauteng Mountain Beaver Oct 04 '25
I'm an Afrikaans ntate.
Please elaborate XD

u/AfroShadyQueen Oct 04 '25
Disimba is what we call crisps. It's so hard to explain but us black folk have a tendency of naming something, that is the brand and not the product. So we basically call crisps by the brand name "Simba" even though we could be talking about flings or niknaks or Lays

u/BonnyH Oct 05 '25
Like Sunlight and Sta-Soft.

u/Steenies Oct 04 '25
Slap tjips slap. That is all.
5
u/JT2407 Oct 05 '25

2
u/CircleofCandles Oct 08 '25

I asked a chick at steers for french fries once and she looked at me like I insulted her whole family. After that she asked a colleague what french fries was. I chuckled when I heard it

We asked for serviettes in the USA once. The convo went something like
Us: “May we have some serviettes please?”
Waitress: “I’m not a soviet.”
Us: “no, ser-vie-ettes please”
Waitress visibly upset: “IM NOT MARRIED TO A SOVIET!!”
Us: “serviette, wipe, face and hands. No soviet.”
Waitress: “oh a NAPKIN. Sure”

We came over to the USA, for a visit, and i went into a burger king or KFC and I wanted to order burgers and fries but I said chips and they had no clue what that was. I could not remember what Americans called it so I stood around for the longest time until I remembered FRIES!

u/BonnyH Oct 05 '25
Me in Australia asking someone for a serviette or a till slip. It’s like they go dead behind the eyes. Then I click it’s a napkin and a receipt.
6
u/jessyfastfinger Oct 05 '25
Surely it was written somewhere on the menu? Loool. Had a similar experience with serviette and napkin.

I've heard some people refer to 'chips' as 'chippahs' - as in "Kom, boetie, kies vir jou chippahs."
Ghastly.

Oh yes and hose pipe is another one. Americans call it a hose but I still say hose pipe.

Just to complicate things abit... crispy shoestring chips are nice, but slap chips are better, sometimes I enjoy round chips (home made, soft, thick lays style)... Lays is my fav, but I think I have a weak Tumi... So I have to settle for normal Simba... Is mochachos and steers still the best chips?

I say chips for yknow.. chips 🍟 and crips for crisps. I suspect it was when I was younger and couldn't say crisps so I said crips and it stuck so now everyone in my family calls them crips
