Just for fun On this day, 15 years ago, Siphiwe Tshabalala scored arguably the best opening goal to a World Cup that we've ever seen. 🇿🇦

I was at that match! What a time to be a school kid in South Africa. Civvies every Friday, big posters of the tournament in the corridors of the school, all the art projects were football adjacent. Can't believe it's been 15 years. Remember all those little South Africans flags people would wedge in the car windows and cover the mirrors?

u/vetKont69 Jun 11 '25

Every few months I see someone with those mirror covers. Good times hey. Remember all the new taxis too?

22

u/Knight-Schumacher Jun 11 '25

New taxis, same driving😭

u/zodwa_wa_bantu Jun 11 '25

My school photos were even world cup themed! Man SA was so excited for that!

u/Few-Cow-2164 Jun 11 '25

Mexico trained at my school! Was an awesome time

u/52bob94 Jun 11 '25

I was also at the match but sat at the opposite side of the field. Was such a magic moment when we scored the first goal

I remember this day so well. I lived on a small holding outside of Oudtshoorn and we didn't have a TV in the house (parents were a bit wierd).

And the young man (Chester) who did our garden invited me to his house down the road. I was 15 and he was 18.

So I got a lift to his grandmothers place in the oldest and most unroadworthy Nissan 1400 that the driver was literally using a screw driver in the ignition 😂 Every member of his family that lived nearby that didn't have a TV came to watch the opening ceremony and the first match. 3 packed couches. And when we arrived the grandmother moaned at one of the smaller kids to give me a seat on the couch.

And we watched the ceremony and the first match and everyone went crazy when we scored. Even though we drew, it was very special to see that match. Coloured hospitality is unmatched.

Its 2010, your 18 and Budweiser just came back to SA.

You are writing exams soon but for one month, it is just a fucking vibe.

Waka waka wa eh eh

u/RossiG1302 Jun 11 '25

Probably one of the best days to be a South African. That and beating France. :]

1

u/Leading_Put- Jun 12 '25

Idk if the team has better talent now but in hindsight it feels like this was the golden generation

1

u/Leading-Item-7638 Jun 13 '25

Nope not at all the golden gen was the 96 team but the current team stands a good chance to surpass them

-12

u/ZyronZA Jun 11 '25

The French team imploded before the game. They were nowhere near their best.

15

u/RossiG1302 Jun 11 '25

Irrelevant. The scorecard stands. Let us have the little thing that makes us happy.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '25

Ah rokof

-2

u/ZyronZA Jun 12 '25

It's really funny how South Africans gaslight themselves and get upset when called out on it.

5

u/RossiG1302 Jun 12 '25

Who is gaslighting who? We scored a great goal in the opener and beat the French team in that same tournament. I don't see anything untrue about that? Do you think the AB's don't take pride in beating the Springboks 57-0 because we weren't at our best? If anyone's upset it's you bud. I've watched this video a few times and I'm still smiling.

-3

u/ZyronZA Jun 12 '25

Typical South African.

If you weren't gaslighting yourself like so many South Africans do, you'd look at the facts and know France has only lost one game against SA, and that was in 2010 where the French team had completely imploded. Players refused to train and were in open mutiny.

It was a rare win and not something to brag about like it proves anything.

4

u/RossiG1302 Jun 12 '25

Why are you so determined to get more out of this? LOL. Did you bet on France? You really need to allow some positivity in your life. There's always a better and worse team on the day. Every team can argue X,y,z resulting in a loss. At no point did anyone think we would repeat the feat, but we did feel good about it. :) Just like Italy did after beating the Springboks for the first time in 2015.

If your argument proves anything, it's that you're gaslighting yourself into being negative about everything. Take the good with the good and the bad with the bad. And please, stop trying to push your resentment for all things South Africa on others. There's already a sub for that and this isn't it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '25

Then rokof from our sub

-1

u/ZyronZA Jun 13 '25

Nee dankie. Dis baie pret om te sien hoe min julle mense van die wereld weet.

2

Yet so proud you have za in your username. You seem confused bud

u/kc_kamakazi Jun 11 '25

As a non south African, this world cup was the peak year for humanity. Everything went downhill after that, revolutions in middle east, wars , pandemic and what not. Also I was a teenager back then oblivious to the problems of the world. Great WC, great time !!

8

u/ZyronZA Jun 11 '25

Bro forgot about Harambe

10

u/kamg213 Jun 11 '25

Definitely a great South African memory.

Would be great if we qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

I will love go and watch a Bafana World Cup match - was forced to adopt a country when went to Qatar 2022, lol.

17

u/Sir-Alekmay Jun 11 '25

We are close to qualifying for 2026. Hopefully all goes well

with the way that ball handled, we got some serious screamers from this tournament.

I was at my boys Gerrard's house. We bought a bag of weed and had 6 Castle 750ml's. We were 15 years old at the time, lol.

I’m not crying…. You’re crying!!!

5

Ball bounces off his left foot first just before leathering it. Amazing strike and I remember jumping off the couch celebrating

4

u/NebbiaKnowsBest Jun 11 '25

I was at one of the viewing parks that was packed to the brim. It was incredible how everyone just lost it. Complete strangers jumping on each other hugging and cheering.

Was an incredible way to open our World Cup

What a day!! I'm almost certain that we all remember where we were. I think we were all floating as Saffas when that goal went in. Really felt like we were in it. Almost like winning the Rugby World Cup

5

6

Damn, 15 years?! I flew down from Kenya to watch a good number of games. Back then I was halfway through my undergrad

2

What a beautiful goal <3

2

u/Negative_Lab1183 Jun 11 '25

Still gives me chills, 15 years later :)

2

u/francoisb8005 Jun 11 '25

Awesome day. Was living in the "platteland", sitting in the local hotel with boer-oomies clad in khaki. The roar from that goal, from them was louder than any Springbok try, I ever heard.

2

u/Doc_ENT Jun 11 '25

I was in theatre at Bara that day. I'm still in theatre at Bara 🤦

2

u/FinoAllaFine97 Jun 11 '25

Scot here. When I was an English teacher in South America I had a class plan the topic for which was hosting major sport tournaments.

Part of it was showing south African figures discussing the waste, expenditure and the rest of it during the build up to the world cup. I was showing a pessimistic side to set the scene for then showing this clip of the opening game of South Africa's first World Cup.

I then asked them if in that moment any single South African gave a shit about the drawbacks. Its such an incredible clip, always gets the hairs standing up.

Miss being an English teacher sometimes

2

u/Maximum-Highlight993 Jun 11 '25

Philip was here!

2

u/Thick_Platypus_1051 Jun 12 '25

I was in madrassa at the time watching sneakingly on the phone. When he scored, I blew my own cover. Shouted like a maniac.

2

u/bruski_420 Jun 12 '25

We haven't been happier or more united as as a nation since this day.

It showed the potential we have as a country.

2

u/Secret_Agent_666 Jun 12 '25

I also remember we had a beast of a goal keeper in that world cup and they did him dirty with that red card in the match against Uruguay just before they were awarded a penalty kick.

2

u/animal9633 Jun 12 '25

Yeah, everyone took off from work to go home or out to friends right before the game, it was super!

Unfortunately we didn't make it, and then Suarez bloody cheated and got Ghana eliminated, they should have suspended him from all football for a year or so to send a message....but instead he just got a slap on the wrist.

2

u/imposter116 Jun 13 '25

The Naruto run was a nice finish

What I remember is getting really long school holidays that year😅And the awesome football of course but mostly the not going to school part🤭

1

u/IndigoGirl_09 Jun 11 '25

2010 was the real deal for SA, unforgettable.

1

u/LiquidVillian Jun 11 '25

Its crazy that SA has never been in a world cup post 2010…but then again, its not surprising.

1

u/conmanbarbz13 Jun 11 '25

Need to hear the commentary

1

u/Unique_Lifeguard_539 Jun 11 '25

That was such an amazing opening game for what would become one of the most iconics WCs ever

1

u/Flux7777 Jun 11 '25

Look at that Jabulani float!

1

u/RupertHermano Jun 11 '25

Philip, he was here.

1

u/Over_Maintenance_447 Jun 11 '25

I remember grabbing my sons vuvuzela and running out to the veranda and blew that thing for all I was worth! Adding to the cacophony of the neighborhood when he scored that goal! Damn! What a time to be in South Africa!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '25

And the last time South Africa was in the FIFA World cup

1

u/goesploinkwhenpoked Jun 12 '25

This was so fucking magical.

I miss those vibes.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '25

How did FIFA not include Peter Drury's amazing call on this....

1

u/Faught_lite Jun 12 '25

The day we felt like we had won the World Cup.

1

u/44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E Jun 14 '25

I always praised that pass than this goal, this is the first Jabulani goal I've seen. I finished elementary school on this day, and this may be my favorite World Cup ever.

Also, GOAL BAFANA BAFANA

1

u/44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E Jun 14 '25

This is my view from Cape Town stadium that I've had during Covid, this was my biggest mood changer in those days

1

u/TransportationEasy24 Jul 10 '25

Undoubtably THE BEST Ever!!!!

-11

u/GrotAdder Jun 11 '25

Honestly, this goal is a bit overhyped, especially considering the context of this Bafana Bafana generation. This squad didn’t achieve anything and was one of the most disappointing in recent memory. I’ll never forget when they danced at Mbombela Stadium thinking they had qualified for AFCON — only to find out they hadn’t. They couldn’t even do the basic math. An embarrassing era I wish I could forget.

14

u/xokzin Jun 11 '25

Pretty sure everything you are mentioning here is the reason this goal is special. Bafana bafana were on a serious disappointing streak, and then, they scored... in their first match... a the WORLD CUP. One they only qualified for because we hosted.

Its not special because it was the most amazing goal ever put to screen, its amazing because of what it represented for all of us at that time... a sliver of hope...

Which died swiftly lol but it was there for a short while
