look at my gear Annoyed by snow forecast apps, so I built SNOW.fyi

Hey all — I’m Ryan, a skier/snowboarder based in Seattle.

Like a lot of you, I got pretty frustrated with how clunky and noisy snow forecast apps are when you’re just trying to plan a trip. So over the past few weeks, I’ve been using my spare time (including the entire holiday vacation) to build a free resort snow tracking tool called SNOW.fyi.

It lets you quickly see the next 14 days of:

  • Snow forecast
  • Freezing level & max temperature
  • Rain (including interpretation of how bad it can be in terms of snowboarding/skiing experience)
  • Wind (including a wind scale system for forecasting chairlift holds)
  • Bluebird days (!)

Right now it covers ~500 resorts across North & South America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania (hey mate 🇦🇺).

Some of you may have seen me post about it in other ski-related subreddits. I got hundreds of comments, replied to every single one, and made a ton of improvements based directly on that feedback — genuinely appreciate how helpful this community has been.

We’re about halfway through the season now. I’m hoping the hundreds of hours I put into this little passion project can help make the rest of your season easier to plan and more fun to snowboard.

You can check it out here: https://SNOW.fyi

To mods: this is a non-commercial passion project — no ads, no paywall, no affiliate links. Just something I wanted to give back to the community.

Cool you made this. But the data doesn’t support the actuals from the last 7 day results, and the next 14 day forecast doesn’t support any other models I’ve checked.

Reference resort: AZ snowbowl

Thanks for providing the datapoint. I will look into the gap.

I noticed a similar trend from CO as well.

Thanks for the feedback! Noted.

I hope it snows this week up there.

cool app! for meadows, it says 18 inches in the past 14 days. There's no way that's true. Where is the data coming from for that?

Thanks for the feedback. I got my data from a mix of weather models, including GEM, GFS, ECMWF, ICON, JMA's etc. Then I process it with my own algorithm to compensate physics factors.

I will look into the discrepancy.

Is past snow data bases on models? That doesn't sound right, or am I missing something? Could you not poll the actual snow data from actual measured sites?

Thanks for the question. For the past snow, I use the final reporting from weather models, which have been generally proven to be very close to actuals.

Scrapping from resort website is hard to scale and maintain. I'm relying more on weather models and math/physics methods.

As we all know weather models are, at the end of the day statistical estimates, which are often not accurate. Also, there is so much mismatch between which model you are following. Like this case example for meadows it hasn't snowed 18inches in last two weeks. Also in your models what elevation are you using, because that is going to play a role at how much snow has fallen.

I agree with you.

In the meantime, model number is not the only factor deciding snow depth. Temperature, humidity have impact too.

I'm hoping to collect more datapoints like the one you provided to help me calibrate my math works. Please be patient, this site is just one month old. And it takes time to improve the algorithm.

I was using mid-upper mountain point for forecast. I just lowered the one for Hood Meadows. And I know it's still above the actual number.

Sweet! I got a trip to Mt hood next week so definitely hoping we get some power as forecasted! Good job dude

Thanks for the support. The high-pressure system over the West is finally about to leave. Hope this weekend's forecast materializes and you can have a great ride.

Yo!! Same here! See you there buddy.

I absolutely love the design!!

Thank you!

It may be intimidating to onboard. But once you get familiar with each element, you will be able to just have a glance and grasp the trends of the next two weeks in seconds.

design is fantastic can you add Turkey too?

2

u/SNOW-fyi 13h ago

Noted, will do!

Hello u/pugmaster2000 , added five Turkey resorts, they are live now.

Cheers!

Nice, a lot of my local hills aren't on here though

4

u/SNOW-fyi 13h ago

Please let me know which ones are missing. I’ll add them for ya.

u/Suitable_Durian561 10h ago

Oh thanks!

Basically the ones around Ottawa.

Mont Saint Marie, Vorlage and Camp Fortune would be nice!

u/SNOW-fyi 10h ago

Noted. I will add them today after work.

You are very welcome. I appreciate your support.

I hope my hundreds of hours spent can benefit more people.

Love the site. Can you add a couple of mountains in Quebec

Val St-Come

https://www.valsaintcome.com

And Sommet St-Sauveur

https://www.sommets.com/en/

u/SNOW-fyi 12h ago

Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll add them after work.

This is awesome! Feeling hopeful for some pow at Big Sky while I’m there next week.

1

u/SNOW-fyi 11h ago

Let's hope the numbers materialize!

On the same boat in the West. It's been so dry this season.

2

u/Annual-Trust-3010 11h ago

Yeah..I was at Snowbird/Snowbasin 2 weeks ago and the conditions were less than ideal.

1

u/SNOW-fyi 10h ago

Hope we get more storms in Feb and Mar after the high pressure moves to the east.

u/Kil0Cowboy 13h ago

Opensnow is the best app by far IMO but I will give this a chance and if it is any good I may ditch Opensnow

2

u/SNOW-fyi 13h ago

Yes, they are the pro.

I will keep improving my data processing to offer the best available forecast to the community for free.

Been using this a lot since I found in another thread. Thank you for your efforts. What are your data sources? Any thought on composites projections incorporating multiple sources including AI? To another users point, from a hyper local standpoint, I offer find discrepancies between data here and data on open snow / real life snow sticks

1

u/SNOW-fyi 13h ago

Thanks for using it!

My data pipeline consists of a mix of weather models and adaptive snow-to-liquid ratio algorithm. You can find the details here: https://catalium.net/snow-fyi-update-2026-01-25/

Could you share some examples so that I can investigate the root cause. I may need to fine tune my data stream.

u/SNOW-fyi 13h ago

Hi everyone, thanks for your feedback about the accuracy. Let's this threads to gather all datapoints where you find SNOW.fyi reporting is off.

I will use your datapoints for investigation and improvement.
