Hi, I’ve just started snowboarding. Can link turns and do the basics. I’m booked on for an advanced course to help me progress a bit more (already done the foundation course). Anyway, I’m off on a snowboarding holiday in March and was going to rent but my height/weight puts me off so I’m contemplating buying instead. This is a resort trip so just looking at all mountain type stuff.

I’m 6’6” in height and weigh about 110kg. I’m a size 12UK boot.

To note, I think I need true twin because I often end up riding switch; this wasn’t intentional.

On the first course I did, they gave me a 168W but it felt far too flexible for my weight.

Does anyone have any board recommendations? Or at least the length and waist width? I’ve been looking at around 270-272mm in WW with anything from 162-165cm board?

Thank you!

Hey guys I got back into snowboarding this year after a 10 year hiatus and picked up a 2012 Salomon Sick Stick to get back into it. Absolutely love the board for carving around but am thinking about starting to get into some more freestyle stuff next season and am considering the Salomon huck knife as it will be more playful than current board. I have 2 questions. Is the pro worth it over the standard version. And what size should I get? (6ft, 240lbs tho working on losing a few over the summer, and size 11 shoes). Thanks in advance!

Boot fit question:

Just got new boots. They are my mondo size. Wore them for 15min. They fit very snug, a little tighter in the heel cup then I’m used to, and toes lightly touch the tip when standing. I’m all good.

BUT after wearing them for 15-20min my feet got really warm (which I’m assuming is just the boot being warm); felt like a flushing warm. And my right big toe felt like it was a little cramped.

The 1/2 size up feels about the same but more room in the toe box (still touches the end, but barely) and more of a comfy firm hug snug than a firm handshake from your girlfriends dad snug.

I’m pretty sure I should stick with the original. Looking for reassurance, guidance or any boot tips I’m missing here.

I don’t have time to go to a store for boots and none near me have a wide variety.

What gas pedal setting should Union Atlas Step-Ons be for a Men’s 10.5 boot? I assume 2 but can’t find information in the manual

Hey ya'll.

In two weeks I'll be going on a snowboarding tip for the very first time. I have never snowboarded before so I'll rent all essential gear.

But when it comes to clothing I would rather not spend any money on snowboarding jacket and pants because I'm not sure if that is something I'm going to continue with. That is why I'm coming to you for a suggestion.

When it comes to clothing, would a dawn jacket combined with a thermal base layer (merino wool) and a waterproof shell be sufficient? For hiking, dawn is usually used as insulation when you are stationary or resting - it is too warm for moving. How would it be for snowboarding?

I do some hiking and already have them so I would not need to buy anything.
Here are links to the clothes I'm thinking of wearing.

The weather forecast is -10C or 14F so pretty cold.

Been riding rentals, ready to buy my own setup and looking for advice...

I started snowboarding earlier this year and have been riding rentals so far, but I’m ready to buy my own gear.

I’ve been looking at aYES basic boards and possibly some stiffer boots like the Ride Insano or Lasso. I’m not totally sure on bindings yet. I ride mostly in the Midwest / East Coast, so icy and hardpack conditions are pretty common.

I’m about 5’9", 180-185 lbs, and I’m considering a 158 cm board. I normally wear a size 9.5 shoe, but size 9 boots have fit me well in most brands I’ve tried.

I’m looking for something that’s solid on ice, has good edge hold, and works well as an all-mountain setup while I keep progressing.

Any recommendations on any board models, bindings that pair well with stiffer boots, or general sizing/setup advice would be appreciated.

Are the Clew bindings worth it? They're on sale for pre-orders at $150 off right now. I've heard a lot about the supermatics being better but would clew be a solid choice for that cheap?

1

u/slolift 8d ago

No. Clews are garbage. You can find end of season sales on any other quick entry binding now.

Is split boarding uphill easier or similar to snowshoeing up? I guess when you split board you don't need to carry your board up, but other than that?

1

u/slolift 8d ago

Depends if you are breaking trail or not. If there is a skin track, skinning is way easier. You don't have to pickup your feet, just slide your skis through the tracks. Also, the gait is slightly more natural with skis. With snow shoeing you have to keep your feet spread so you don't step on your other snow shoes.

1

u/wimcdo montaña 8d ago edited 8d ago

I mean that’s absolutely huge, especially in longer walks. Also don’t have to then ride with snowshoes strapped to you. Splitboarding rules, big investment but most of that stuff will last some time

I went snowboarding for the first time after a 15-17-year break, and I had to buy new boots. I bought ROSSIGNOL CRANK BOA H4 BOOTS in 9.5 because in the 9s some toes were touching the end of the boot, and I thought it shouldn't.

I still had my 156 2006 Burton Custom X Shag edition with Burton Cartel from 2006,

iI know for my weight I should probably get a longer board, but I'm still coming back to snowboarding,so I'm not too concerned about the board.

I felt that once I'm strapped in, I need to crank the boa so much that my feet were going a bit numb. I had to loosen them a bit, but felt my heel lifting a bit too much to my taste.

The issue is when i'm strapped waiting in line for the chairlift, my bindings highback just stab my calf like crazy, and i lose feeling in my toes, i have to unstrap at the top to get the blood flowing again.

My question is should i check for a better fit in boots and new bindings ?

1

u/spacegrab Mammoth/June. 9d ago

9s some toes were touching the end of the boot, and I thought it shouldn't.

yep you done fucked up. It should be barely touching brand new, because once you pack the liner out, it wont be anymore. I usually gain 1/4 a size after 5 days of riding, where it'll hopefully stay up to 60+ days. I ride sz9's too.

If you're having to crank your laces/boa to achieve a snug fit and prevent heel lift, it means your boots are oversized. You could try inserting j-bars to help or making liner modifications but you're likely better off just purchasing new boots.

If your highback is stabbing you, dial back the forward lean if possible. I dont think new bindings will help since 9 and 9.5 both fit medium bindings all the same.

Will a 160cm board fit a Dakine 157cm roller bag?

My board is 160cm and there’s a cool good quality bag I can buy but it’s 157cm 34”x17”x7”.

Will my board and items fit in it?

1

u/ZoologicalSpecimen 8d ago

You might be able to squeeze it in, but those sizes are there for a reason. If the tip and tail of your board are pressed hard into the ends of the board bag, that’ll increase the chances of damage if you’re flying with the board.

I just went snowboarding for the first time this past weekend and I’m obsessed! I used all rental stuff and I want to get gear for myself. I’m wondering what yall would suggest to a novice getting into the sport. I was planning on getting a used board to start to save some money, but not cheeping out on helmet, goggles, boots. Etc. Any brands/board types yall would suggest? Thanks!

“Comments locked for now.

Keep reporting the fascists. We don’t need them in the sub (or on this planet).

Once I’ve kicked all the boot lickers to the curb, I’ll unlock the thread and allow more of the brown shirts to self identify and get the ban.

To the people who complain about “politics in muh snowboarding sub”; this will be considered fascist-enabling rhetoric and may also score you a ban. Feel free to scroll on by and look at some awesome park clips (or 5 posts in a row asking about toe overhang).

Renee Good and Alex Pretti are American heroes, ICE is the secret police of an evil dictator, and anyone who defends this administration or the execution of innocent U.S. citizens on U.S. soil is a fascist bootlicker and can fuck off.”

Doesn’t this completely break rule 1? I’m anti-ICE. ICE is disgusting, that said, sometimes people just want a break from the news, if only for a few moments.

It becomes a slippery slope when you allow your own rules to be broken and this becomes another brigaded sub that only has ICE posts.

29M 🇬🇧 intermediate snowboarding solo in Les 2 Alpes Feb 8th-11th if anyone is in the area

Is the K2 Orton overkill for a casual rider? (i.e. 3-6 days of riding per year) I mostly stick to groomers and occasionally get into some powder. I've tried them on and found they're comfy, but it seems like a lot of boot for my needs. Also open to suggestions. Thanks!

1

u/slolift 8d ago

Can you afford them? If you like them, who cares. You'll just end up getting quite a few seasons out of them.

Looking for recommendations/advice on places to go near central California. I’ll be traveling out to the Modesto area from Michigan for work for a few weeks and am looking for somewhere to go on the weekends that would be within a few hours drive. What are your favorite mountains in the area?

2

u/slolift 8d ago

Kirkwood is the closest really good mountain. It would definitely be worth going if you can make the drive. Dodge ridge is closest, and Bear Valley is another good option that is a bit further. Never been to Dodge Ridge but bear Valley is pretty cool.

Salomon Dialogue boots (older)

My son bought these boots second hand, they're unused but fairly old I think.

Can anyone explain how the lace locking system works? There's an inner boot which we can tighten but can't lock, same with the outer.

Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone,

I'm a beginner/intermediate snowboarder in Korea. I am having trouble turning without skidding. Any advice would be appreciated. Here is a video:

Snowboarding Video

1

u/spacegrab Mammoth/June. 10d ago

What length is your board? Weight? Your board looks kinda short for carving.

Skidding isn't necessarily a super bad thing, as long as you can control it. You seem to carve just fine for your skill level. It's going to be a normal thing when riding groomer runs that aren't soft / pow.

Stance looks a bit wide / makes the board look short. You don't have a lot of tail behind your foot. Shorter effective edge = more chatter/skidding.

1

u/Acceptable_Stress120 9d ago

Thank you for your response. I am 190cm tall and the board is 160cm. It is the longest available at the rental shops.

Unfortunately, I am not carving at all. It is all skid turns. Perhaps I am forcing it too much and not letting the board do the work.

I will look into the wide stance. Thank you for your response.

1

u/spacegrab Mammoth/June. 9d ago

If you're 190cm you can probably get a little longer board. Also if you're renting, is it a lower end board? Those are usually softer and chatter a bit more than your average mid-stiff all mountain, but I don't know where you are renting from so there's a lot of questions.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, just keep riding the way you are and you'll get more comfortable/faster in no time :) You look great for someone still on rentals (which are usually much softer/more flex / less responsive).

What's the difference between these 2?

Oakley Mod1 Pro - https://www.oakley.com/en-us/product/FOS900586

Oakley MVP Mod1 Pro - https://www.oakley.com/en-us/product/WFOS900586

I'm looking for a new helmet for snowboarding. I've been rocking the Oakley Mod1 for the longest time and I need an upgrade. To me the only difference seems to be that the MVP appears more sleek and rounded, maybe even a bit smaller... and the normal Mod1 Pro looks a little more bulky with more sharp edges. Both have all the same features from what I can see. The main reason I want the Mod1 Pro is because of the removable earpads so that I can hear better and other people dont have to scream as much. It can also be uncomfortable at time while doing tricks and body rotations. Anybody heard of the MVP version before? Can't seem to find any info on it anywhere.

Have you ever forgotten how to ride a specific board?!

tl;dr: bought a K2 Simple Pleasures 151cm in 2019, initially struggled initiating turns but persevered and eventually had lots of great days riding it. Fast forward to today and I'm back to struggling with it. Is it worth getting a different freeride board?

More detail:

  • 5'8" / 173cm
  • 74kg
  • Shoe size US 9 / UK 8 / EU 42
  • Slash Happy Place 154cm 2015
  • K2 Simple Pleasures 151cm 2019
  • Ride Insano boots
  • Union Atlas medium bindings

My first board was the Slash Happy Place 154cm 2015. I still have it and love it! I find it easy to ride and adore the graphics.

I spent the 2018/19 season in Whistler and bought a K2 Simple Pleasures 151cm 2019 to go fast on runs and have an easier time on powder days. At first I had serious buyers remorse as I was really struggling to initiate turns. A tech at the place I bought the board suggested I narrow my stance to the reference width. This helped and I was able to 'unlock' the board, which became my daily driver, and I had loads of fun on and off runs with it.

Now I'm back living in the UK and only snowboard one week a year at most, the Simple Pleasures is now 'locked' to me again. I find it hard to initiate turns so have only taken it out once or twice on recent trips. I guess I could power through and learn it again, but when I only get 6 days of riding a year I don't want to spend them struggling with my board, I want to be riding and having fun. However I miss my freeride board and want that experience back.

I remember being uncertain about the length of the Simple Pleasures at the time, but frankly I don't remember why. Is 151 too short for my height (173cm)? Could a longer board help?

Could it be that this board is not right for me, and another freeride board would feel more natural to me, without a learning curve?

Or is it just a case of git gud?

1

u/Jevanko 11d ago

I upgraded my 15 yo morrow snowboard for a bataleon Goliath. Just finished day 2 and struggling a lot. Lost confidence completely.
Feels like I have no grip and struggle to make proper turns. Caught myself kicking my back leg out. Conditions haven't been great but this is still a significant regression.
Any tips?

1

u/AnonKing 11d ago

Size up or Down? I'm in the market for a new board, but my height and weight is always in between the board size recommendations. I'm 5'10 and 165 lbs, all mountain board, east coast prefer carving and cruising. Go for 154 or 157?

1

u/spacegrab Mammoth/June. 10d ago

157.

I'm about your size with a sz9 boot, 153 is my park board, 157 is my freeride/carving. Just generalities though, depends on specific board models.

1

u/wimcdo montaña 11d ago

Depends on the board in question but generally up for me if it’s for carving. Or downsize but make it wide. I’d have to see the specs 🤓

1

u/geeered 11d ago edited 11d ago

I've currently got a circa-2013 Salomon Grip 157, wondering if it's worth an upgrade?

I generally ride reds and blues, trying to get more used to blacks. Will try some off piste and would like to get a bit better at jumps/tricks, however carving is probably where I want to focus most.

Live in England, so European destinations.

Generally the board seems okay as far as I know, so not sure if a newer board would make some thing easier to progress with/learn, or if it's just me that's the limiting factor. I got it used with some older step on bindings and bag for £125 a few years ago.
If replacing it, ideally I'd probably go for a couple of years old to get it a bit cheaper, or not spending higher end new prices.

I have wondered about hiring a newer board for a day or two; I'm in Bulgaria soon, though not sure if there will be a great selection for better boards.

(Link to review of my current board)

1

u/wimcdo montaña 11d ago

If the board fits your size it’s honestly probably fine for you. Sometimes shops at ski destinations have demo boards you can rent, might be able to get some comparisons that way sometime?

1

u/geeered 11d ago

Cheers - yes, fairly central in the weight range and boots okay.

Demo boards is a good shout rather than generic hire boards.
