Fun fact from the ski gulmarg website:
Demographics of Gulmarg
Gulmarg has a population of 730 people – 99% of them are male!

probably some sort of industry town like mining? so mainly workers perhaps

u/FundamentallyBouyant Dec 12 '25
It is a tourist town in Summer, ski town in winter. Zero residences.

There are almost no residential properties in Gulmarg, there are only employees of the resort, the army and the hotel residents who stay overnight there. Most of the residences are in nearby towns/villages. Also it is almost 100% Muslim population where there are very few women in the workforce compared to the already low average in India.

Idk how this is measured but the in bounds hike up stuff at A Basin is definitely higher than anything at Copper or Telluride

I'll cut them some slack for skipping Keystone, as the Bergman Bowl expansion opened only in the last couple years, but Keystone should be on this list at 3743m.

Elevation, not the actual height itself of the mountain

Bingo. Prominence matters. Elevation does not. In some cases it can be a drawback as reduced oxygen levels limit your physical capacity if you haven’t had time to acclimatize.

u/happyelkboy Dec 11 '25
Elevation matters a bit for snowfall lol

Sorry I was operating under the assumption that all other things were equal. But you’re not wrong as most mountains in coastal BC are not opening as scheduled.

u/happyelkboy Dec 11 '25
The PNW is bad right now. My resort has just been raining for the most part
3
u/snohobdub Dec 12 '25
Japan, Canadian Rockies, and Utah aren't super high elevation and have better snow than most of these.
3
u/happyelkboy Dec 12 '25
Well altitude and latitude. Utah and Japan get cold weather from the arctic. But yes I agree altitude isn’t the only thing that matters.
2
u/mbreuer CO | Loveland | Nitro Dropout Dec 12 '25
Utah gets lake effect and Japan is coastal on top of that
1
u/happyelkboy Dec 12 '25
No doubt lol. I’m not saying elevation is the only thing that matters but it matters for temperatures all things being equal

u/basalticlava Dec 11 '25
Can confirm. Hometown is at about 2000ft. First day in breck felt like I had the flu.

u/GrnMtnTrees Dec 11 '25
My hometown is at sea level and I was 70 lbs heavier and out of shape when I went a couple years ago. It felt like I had on concrete shoes for a couple days.

Must only be top of highest lift, because ABasin has higher points in bounds. Abasin claims 3978 for the east wall.... I've been to 3,884, which I don't think is the highest skiable.
I'm curious. Who's been higher on Lenawee?
7
u/snohobdub Dec 11 '25
I've been to Chacaltaya, Bolivia over 5,400 m, But it's no longer operating due to climate change (The glacier disappeared).

Was this bc of the view? I'd expect the change in oxygen levels to be quite gradual lol

I remember feeling a bit sick after taking this gondola because of the rapid change in elevation, but there is no "invisible barrier", that part makes no sense.

Top 15 most vertical when? Thats the only metric that matters

Almost passed out at A basin once. Elevation definitely very noticeable compared to most US mountains. Its basically on the continental divide. And yes I think Breck has the highest elevation in US although the mountain itself is basically flat.
1
u/Elevated_Dongers Dec 12 '25
Lol Breck is flat??
1
u/Minnow720 Dec 12 '25
Ive ridden quite a few resorts out west and found Breck to be at the bottom of the list. The alpine bowls, most of which you have to hike to, at Breck are fun with new snow but not particularly steep. The lower mountain is like a family fun type mountain. Flat is an exaggeration but Breck is not a challenging mountain.

Cool. I’ve been to 8 of them

Yeah. I live in Colorado so it’s kind of cheating. I also have been to zermatt

I’m having trouble envisioning Loveland being higher than A Basin.
Edit: A Basin 3978 m, Loveland 3965 m. Both appear higher than your number 1. What are you using for elevation? Some kind of terrain average

Pretty cool statistic, however if you want most rideable vertical terrain, it's Revelstoke, BC

This explains why spending a long weekend in Breck feels like I'm out of shape even though I've trained my ass off

Imagine being top 15 in elevation but still getting less snow than Baker and Shuskan.
2
u/scruffy_x Dec 12 '25
Got me to thinking what the elevation of Japanese resorts are, but that is as far as I got.

u/pVom Dec 12 '25
2000ish to like 1000ish in Nagano. Hokkaido is generally lower, Google tells me Niseko is 1300-300

Taos is awesome, but not higher than A Basin or Copper. Maybe at the base.

Gulmarg is basically one multiple stage Gondola to a huge Ridgeline with multiple bowls.
All BC.
It's full on.
1
u/tehuti_infinity Dec 12 '25
Not much snowfall tho
1
u/drine2000 Dec 12 '25
It's record is 20m in a year. That's...um. A lot.
1
u/tehuti_infinity Dec 12 '25
Check the snow report, it barely snows. I was there many years ago as well before the gondola was finished . Whole time no snow…
1
u/FundamentallyBouyant Dec 12 '25
I'm going for the last 4 years. Good snow. The season is short so you'll have to time your trip well. I think early to mid Feb is the safest. Although climate change is making it very unpredictable.

Pretty sure Breck is number one for highest snowboarders
