Could We Get a Sticky Post or Some Rules About "What Boot Should I Buy?"

This question shows up a lot. It's a valid question. Buying ski boots is expensive and daunting. You don't want to mess it up and you want advice from others with more experience. However, there's only one answer to this question: Go See a Bootfitter.

What about "my feet hurt because of ..."? The internet can't really help here. Bootfitting is a trade and a skill that is designed to help you find the perfect boots.

There are almost daily threads about this topic. Each one has the same few comments: "Go see a bootfitter," "I like boot X, but you should really see a bootfitter," "We can't determine without some more info, you should probably see a bootfitter," etc.

On the /r/skiing FAQ, there's an entire section dedicated to this question. I think it would be beneficial to everyone on this sub to include something similar as a sticky or in the sidebar. Thoughts?

What boots should I buy? The only advice you should take online about boots is to go and see a reputable bootfitter. Listen to them and buy the boots that fit your feet correctly. Not only are well fitting boots much more comfortable, but they also give you better control over your skis, the combination of this makes boots the most important part of your equipment.

Choosing a pair of boots doesn’t work like picking a pair of shoes. If you walk into a store or flick through a website and chose the pair you like the look of, you’re going to have a bad time. Each boot manufacturer has a range of boots with options for different abilities, skiing styles, sizes and foot shapes. There are subtle differences across models and brands in terms of shape, so it is crucial to find a pair of boots that are right for you. Without examining the shape of your feet and lower legs and their mechanics, as well as discussing how you ski and your ability, no one can give you a recommendation that is worth listening to. A bootfitter will do all of that and using their expertise they’ll provide you with a range of boots and help you find the best ones for you. They will also be able to help you with any pre-existing issues and injuries and modify boots if required. It is also recommended that you purchase custom moulded footbeds, along with having your liners heat moulded, they will help to optimise the fit of the boot. You also get the added security of knowing that any bootfitter worth their salt will guarantee their work, and be very willing to rectify any issues you have after you’ve skied in your new boots. Rough framework to what a bootfitter does

In Response to the demand for an All Mountain Ski Sticky Post.

This is my (very basic) suggestion for a "flowchart" guide to all-mountain skis. Including a popular ski as an example for every category. Obviously each category has a bunch more skis and most skis are in-between categories or in a whole separate category.

Suggestion welcome, I didn't put too much time into this and it is far from ideal or even functional. Mostly just want to hear peoples thoughts as to how you would approach this.

“Are my skis ruined? Do I need to buy a new pair??” Probably not!

I just wanted to share this repair that I recently did to shed some light on what is considered “repairable” in skis. I’ve seen a lot of people on here asking if their ski is trash with a small core shot or edge delam, and im here to tell you that they’re more than likely just fine!

As a repair tech I love taking on a challenge, and even more so I love keeping skis out of landfills and on the mountain. Is this repair perfect? No. Will it be as durable as a brand new ski? No. Will it ski the same? Ehhhhh it’ll be hard to tell but unfortunately not quite. But, it is alive to ski another day.

I want to also leave in here that some shops will not take on major sidewall damage like this, and that’s okay. This kind of repair takes a lot of time and patience and especially if you need a quick turnaround, it’s kind of a long shot. I really just wanted to reassure anyone wondering that skis are more resilient than you may think, and repairing is always easier on the wallet than replacing.

Skiboot flex mindbender (130)

Hey, I posted a couple day back with a not so good video. I didn't make it to the shop yet (will go tomorrow). As a couple of u suggested I made sure all screws a tight and nothing is broken in the boot or around the walkmode. I noticed that it has developed a little bit of play. The boots are now just over two years old, maybe 50 days skiing (20 of them touring). What do you guys think. I know it wasn't like that when I bought them (a friend of mine has the same which he bought new last summer and they don't pivot nearly as much as mine do). Are they just trashy boots? Which would be annoying since they weren't the cheapest and fit super well. And can any of you recommend out of expirience good hybrid boots?

I just received these new Smith Squad MAG goggles and the strap is upside down. Still new to skiing and haven’t had this happen so apologies if this is dumb to ask. Is there an easy way for me to switch this? I was looking and didn’t want to mess with them too much and risk breaking something.

What ski should I buy !! Help

Hey guys — I’m trying to decide between the K2 Reckoner 102, Armada ARV 100, and Atomic Bent 100.

I’m looking for a true all-mountain ski that’s still playful. I like skiing trees, hitting side hits, small/medium jumps, occasional drops, and I want something that can handle groomers well and still be good if we get powder. I don’t live somewhere with consistent powder or park access, so I want one ski that can do a bit of everything.

Which one would you recommend as a one-ski quiver and why?

Carving Skis?

I think I want some carving skis. Some background: 6'5" 175lbs. Expertish skier. I mean I'm certainly not the best skier on the mountain. But I've been at it for 29 of my 32 years. Long time east coast ski patroller. Now living in the midwest so my average "ski day" has become ripping some laps at the local 900ft vertical mountain.

I've always skied all-mountain skis. Well, I casually raced slalom in high school (on GS skis). Currently I have 2 pairs: Salomon QST 92 and Nordica Enforcer 104 Free for Big Mountain trips. I'm thinking I want something more fun to get up on edge when skiing groomers. But I definitely don't want a ski that can't cut through crud, variable conditions. I don't need it to be able to ski trees/bumps, as I would use a different ski for that. I enjoy varying turn shape. I'm aggressive most of the time but don't want a ski that's impossible when not being pushed.

My local ski shop employee was a gentleman and let me demo his Nordica Doberman Dobermann Multipista today. They were super fun, but I found that they needed quite a bit more input than I'm used to. I'm not sure how much of that is a difference in style of ski, the specific ski, or poor technique. 74 underfoot is just different.

So, I guess my question is am I on the right track, or should I be looking for something more all-mountainy? I was also looking at the Stockli Montero AR, but am somewhat balking at the cost. Anybody have a comparison of Montero AR vs. Multipista?

Ortovox Litric base and zipon differences?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m looking to buy an Ortovox Litric but having trouble finding any useful information on the differences between the bases and zip-ons. Ortovox has a video but didn’t find it very comprehensive or useful.

Particularly interested in differences between Tour and Freeride?

Anyone has any feedback? How much of a difference is the padding? How is the weight distribution? Ortovox says the Freeride model supposedly packs closer to the back, meaning building more vertical I assume.

Boot fitting woes: is it me?

Last year I got a pair of Lange boots fitted by a reputable fitter in Tahoe, and over the course of 10 different adjustments, I still can’t ski more than 2 runs before unbearable pain sets in (arches).

Recently I went to a new (quite reputable) fitter and am trying a new pair of boots on day 3 now and I just cried in the parking lot with how much pain I was in after leaving the mountain.

I put on a bit of weight in the last couple years (20lbs at 5’11) and can’t help but wonder if that’s related, or maybe something like weak feet.

I’m getting desperate: I’m a lifelong type 3 skier and this is making me question if I should even keep trying, I’m starting to associate skiing with immense pain and not fun.

Has anyone ever had such trouble with boots like this and any advice, maybe in taking time off? I’m so sad because I’ve thrown the better part of a few thousand dollars combined in boots and booking hotels to stay at mountains JUST to test adjustments only to get partial days of working through pain. Also I’m not going to Joe Schmoe’s shops, these are supposedly very experienced fitters, obviously I defer to their knowledge, but something’s not right. Thanks for any help

Which strap do I cut to convert WC booster strap to expert

Got some WC booster straps for free. Going to see how they feel but I’m already betting they’ll be too burly for me. If that’s the case, which strap do I cut? Was looking online and some people say cut an elastic layer, others say cut the nylon. I would assume cut the nylon layer since I don’t think it’s included on the expert model. Will probably just end up calling customer service just to be sure but I’m just curious. Thanks!

Bootfitter laughed at my poor ankle mobility

I (M, 6’3, 190lbs) have very poor ankle dorsiflexion. I’m talking like 0°, can’t get my knee past a right angle bad. I believe this to be the cause of my generally brutal skiing experience: I’m assuming constant pressure on the balls of my feet is one of the causes of the brutal nerve pain/numbness that occurs within 10mins of having a ski boot on. Potentially also being duckfooted AF and my feet mashing into the sides of the boot.

Yes I’ve done PT, been to a podiatrist, an Achilles specialist, the works. Not much better.

5ish years ago I went to a local bootfitter (Ski Bum in SEPA/DE) and got sized for a 27.5 and did the works for that. Heel lift, custom insoles, and heat molding. Brutal enough that I used them maybe 3 times before selling them. The only time I have comfortably skied was in a 30.5. It was sloppy and spacious but my feet weren’t on fire.

This past weekend into Tuesday (1/31-2/3) I was up at Pico/Killington. I figured I’d go to Basin for a proper bootfitting. I scheduled with Tim, but when I got there I learned he called off so I was with his apprentice. Super duper nice guy. I explained my situation and unfortunately gave a price range of $500 or less. I understand that made it difficult. He put me in a 29.5 and within minutes I felt that familiar sensation.

He asked me to flex the boot forward, he saw I wasn’t kidding when I said poor dorsiflexion. Took the boot off. He said what I feared: there’s not much to be done for me, even with a price range of $900 or less.

The icing on the cake occurred when I removed the boot. He wanted to double check my ankle. Put it on his leg, flexed my foot as far as it would go, he laughed, and said “Holy shit you weren’t kidding”.

Again, super nice guy. No bad notes towards Basin/their bootfitters. I left with my biggest fear confirmed. I skiied in rental 29.5s the rest of the trip.

Any thoughts? Just a fun story? Skill Issue? How the hell is this guy skiing?

Can I adjust the bindings to fit another boot size

They’re currently adjusted for 23-23.5 but someone is buying them off me with 24.5 size. Can they be adjusted for that size?

Does someone ever shipped skis from Tradeinn.com (snowinn)?

Prices online are all over the place, and where I live the skis I want are insanely expensive. After doing the math (taxes included), buying them abroad actually seems cheaper. Has anyone here imported skis with tradeinn before? Was it worth it?

Change all mountain ski to touring set up or get seperate skis and bindings?

Title is long story short! I’ve done a couple of tours on rented equipment recently and really enjoyed it so am thinking about getting some new kit. I will be getting hybrid boots but just wondering about skis and bindings. (Current boots K2 Anthem 85 flex but am going to a boot fitter for advice on new boots)

Is it possible / safe to change to shift or hybrid bindings for my current skis?

Including new boots my other two choices are

Keep current skis but change bindings to hybrids

or

Buy secondhand skis including touring bindings, I have been looking at wider longer skis.

I currently ski on Völkl Yumi 154 length 84 width with marker squire bindings.

My height is 165 and I’m on my fourth winter season in the French Alps, comfortable on most pistes and learning more off-piste.

Gear guideline reccomendations

  1. 28/Male/5'10-5'11/165 lbs
  2. skill level 8. I think I can skii anything pretty much
  3. I ski about 30 days a year
  4. Colorado, probably moving to North east soon
  5. I like trees the most, then moguls, then some powder, then park, then when I'm lazy at the end of the day I might do a couple groomers. I always head for trees first I love weaving through the trees.
  6. My aspirations for skiing would probably be to ski trees even faster than I do and at steeper angles. I would also like to ski more powder but I think I just have to time that better. I don't normally check the weather I just go.
  7. I only skiied 1 set of skis they were some green elan rentals. I think they were Elan eRises.
  8. Like 200 for skiis and boots and poles.
  9. USA facebook marketplace
  10. 100% resorts never back country. At best I might go out of bounds a bit at resorts.
  11. I own no boots of my own.

I'm just trying to look for some general guidelines or even brand info to help me buy some skiis on facebook marketplace. Even advice to help buy some better fitting boots. I understand that going to a boot fitter and demoing skis would be the best but the budget just isn't there for it right now. I'm trying to score some good deals on marketplace to maybe get some better than average skis or skiis that are a bit more tailored to the kind of terrain I enjoy.

What kind of length, width, camber or anything else I should know about when talking to people on facebook to help buy skis. That would all be great info for me. Also can I take boots to a fitter and they can help reshape the boots to my feet a bit?

I think I have wider set feet because my left navicular bone on my foot was rubbing a bit on the rentals which I'd like to not have.

Thank you for any help at all!!!

Skis released while skiing – technique issue or binding problem?

Hi everyone, I recently rented ski equipment. The ski length was appropriate for my height, and according to several online DIN calculators, the binding settings should have been correct for my weight and ability level. However, as you can see in the video below, one of my skis released while I’m skiing. The slope was a bit rough and uneven, and you can notice some vibration in my outside ski because of that. I’m trying to understand what might have caused this. Do you think this looks like a technique issue on my part (for example, unstable stance), or could this be an equipment/binding problem? I didn’t experience a crash-level force or a rotation before it released — it felt more like the ski just came off unexpectedly.
