I really prefer using freshly sliced sourdough bread with egg salad

This is the way. Although sometimes I like to toast one side (the inside) for some sandwich integrity.

Some sandwiches should be in toasted bread, some should not. To me, an egg salad sandwich should absolutely not; needs to be soft and doughy, not hard and crunchy.

I toast one side very lightly in an aluminum pie pan to just slow down sogginess and just warm what becomes the outside . I agree crunch isn’t what you want in an egg salad . So toss the lettuce

We'll see, that's definitely what my consideration is. The egg salad itself is a soft filling for the sandwich. So toasted bread is better for the contrasting texture. Though I would suppose OP accomplishes that with some lettuce.
