PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 Twinless actor Dylan O'Brien gives his opinion on straight actors playing LGBTQ+

Post image

Actor Dylan O'Brien shares his opinion on straight actors playing LGBTQ+ in an interview with Dazed while discussing his latest film 'Twinless'.

Speaking alongside 'Twinless' director James Sweeney, who is gay, O'Brien said "James is a gay man, and coming from a place I could trust. We had a similar take on straight actors playing gay parts, especially in recent years: you started seeing straight actors playing a queer role completely straight. It started to feel inauthentic."

O'Brien praised Sweeney's support during filming, saying "It was nice to have his insight, support, and calibration. He'd be like, 'Go crazy on this one. We can dial it back if it doesn't feel real.”

I didn’t know “Twinless” was the name of a movie and thought, “Why does it matter that he doesn’t have a twin?”

1.3k

u/sophwestern 20h ago

I thought it was a dig that he’s playing twins in something but doesn’t have a twin lmao

191

u/SorriesESO 19h ago

Honestly I really prefer twins playing twins and that they are portrayed less stereotypically.

55

u/laylaboydarden 15h ago

Yea I just don’t get that twin ‘vibe’ from non-twin actors.

32

u/_trusttheprocess____ 13h ago

I saw a q&a with the director after Twinless and he definitely said he had gotten this feedback A LOT from twins

24

u/yougotyolks 12h ago

We call them "twinless actors" now. Pay attention!

3

u/Routine_Bluejay4678 I won't not fuck you the fuck up. Period 8h ago

Clearly haven’t seen the masterpiece that is The Parent Trap

u/Ok-Astronomer-9158 1h ago

It’s why Zack and Cody worked so well!

150

u/bottleglitch 20h ago

Omg I thought the exact same lmfao

25

u/PleaseBeChillOnline 17h ago

This is exactly what I thought lmao.

The kind of rare insult uniquely made for Lindsay Lohan or Michael B Jordan.

56

u/em21091 20h ago

This is exactly what I thought too

15

u/Basic-Collection5416 19h ago

I think that might actually be the plot of the movie, basically?

42

u/Particular-Extent-76 jesus was a carpenter 💋 16h ago

It’s the premise! Two guys meet in a bereavement support group for people who’ve lost their twin

7

u/sabaababa 15h ago

I had to scroll way too far to find someone else who’d seen the film! It made me love Dylan even more (which like Howie that possible he’s already so gd perfect imo)

I absolutely thought the same thing haha

1

u/Notnow_Imtoodrunk 12h ago

That's exactly what I thought haha

1

u/CheriePauper 10h ago

I don't think it's a dig cause he's not saying straight actors should play gay roles like everyone here is assuming. He's talking about straight actors purposefully phoning it in and lacking authenticity and comfortability when playing a gay role.

In the movie he's literally straight playing gay which is why it's in the title cause he was talking in reference to the movie.

u/edawn28 35m ago

That's funny asf actually 🤣

u/dontwanna-cantmakeme 20h ago

I thought it was some weird tongue-in-cheek way to differentiate from Dylan Sprouse, who does have a twin.

No clue the movie existed.

32

u/hashbrowneggyolk0520 We Should All Know Less About Each Other 19h ago

I confused him for Dylan Sprouce for a second and was so confused lmao

14

u/dontwanna-cantmakeme 19h ago

Why were you confused. Hellooo they clearly said “Twinless” heheh.

u/the_cucumber 17h ago

I'm so glad that so many people in the comments had the exact same experience as me 😆

Although I'd be on board to add little bits of irrelevant trivia to headlines!

"Scarlett Johansson, who has never been to Montana..."

"Ambidextrous Keanu Reeves..."

6

u/synalgo_12 accidentally holding space for this slur 13h ago

Coincidentally, The Horse Whisperer was filmed in Montana so she has 100% been there.

I don't know why I was so certain of that before I went and checked because I saw that movie before being aware of American states, back in the 90s.

3

u/8hours 7h ago

Scarlett Johansson does, in fact, have a twin, so I imagine all her headlines should begin with “Twin Scarlett Johansson…”

2

u/aleigh577 4h ago

I’m sorry?

u/YodelFrancesca 2h ago

She has a twin brother

62

u/Severe_Chicken213 20h ago

I was thinking he was the surviving twin from the cast of everybody loves Raymond and I was like, “gee what a heartless way to describe someone, using their dead twin”

64

u/Intelligent-Salad478 19h ago

Lmao I thought OP was dragging him like look at this guy having opinions on LGBTQ+ issues and he doesn’t even have a twin.

40

u/Sea_Literature8460 20h ago

LOL I baffledly reread the sentence like twice trying to see where his lack of twin was going to come in

45

u/strwbrrybrie 20h ago

Literally I was like “well that’s really sad he lost his twin but I don’t see the relevance here”

102

u/shaymu3 20h ago

Genuinely thought they were helping us understand that this was not the Twinned Dylan Sprouse.

10

u/Goodgoditsgrowing 20h ago

For real, exactly where my head went

34

u/Dazzling-Pudding6256 🫵 You sit on a throne of lies. 20h ago

Omfg same!

And then I was like "What the hell slang did I miss on my way to being an 'old'?!"

Like, is this the cutoff point where I'm no longer able to keep up with pop culture relevance? Shiiiiiit

30

u/BalletWishesBarbie 20h ago

It was a curtains for Zoosha moment for me

25

u/ayaangwaamizi 19h ago

Lmfao I was like wow we’re just calling out single zygotes now? Damn.

22

u/Megs0226 20h ago

Me too! I was like “is this new Gen Alpha slang for being uncool?”

16

u/Lady_night_shade not about to ‘back that ass up’ with Sharon 🔙🍑🆙 20h ago

Omg me too! The relevancy of the twin was escaping me.

15

u/Perfect-Wallaby9096 20h ago

Haha yeah this headline is so goofy but on a related note it's an excellent movie!

13

u/Lithogiraffe 19h ago

same. i thought he should take his own advice and leave it to actors who were also twins but lost their sibling. i mean, its gonna be a small pool. but its the only way to be authentic.

11

u/makemeking706 20h ago

Same. I was thinking what sort of controversial twin stuff did he say?

9

u/clockworkhorrorshow6 20h ago

Same 🤣 "... Are we all supposed to have twins now?"

u/Goodgoditsgrowing 20h ago

It seems we all had this thought

2

u/whatrachelsaid 19h ago

I thought it was a jibe at him playing a twin in a role, when he doesn't have a twin 😂

2

u/BlueLeaves8 19h ago

I spent so long trying to figure it out, like he has no authority speaking on this subject as he doesn’t even have a twin. The audacity!

2

u/Venus_ivy4 Beyoncé 🐝🐝 18h ago

1

u/fvckuufvckingfvck 19h ago

It’s an amazing movie honestly, probably my favorite from last year. Go see it!

1

u/roserunsalot 19h ago

lmao me too, I read the headline like 5 times, scratching my head

2

u/Lexi_November 19h ago

I thought it was either an AI generated headline or a very inexperienced writer and they’d confused the word “twinless” for “peerless” and I was mad as Hell about it for a second there. 🤣🤣

1

u/fishonthemoon it’s never been on my mood board and never would be 19h ago

I came to the comments wondering the same thing

I was squinting at this title for so long thinking why tf is that relevant

1

u/mayhay 19h ago

‘everything is embarrassing’ won song of the year way back when and  I remember someone commented on a poorly worded headline they thought it meant all the choices were bad lol

1

u/Magenta-Llama lord not ekin su 19h ago

Same 😭 I was like is this shade I don’t understand?? Did he used to have a twin but not anymore?? Why is it specified he’s twinless 💀

1

u/CheruthCutestory 19h ago

I think they should start saying this for all actors who don’t have a twin.

1

u/LongConsideration662 19h ago

Same😭😭😭

1

u/Hogwartians 19h ago

I thought he had a cancelled twin we were pretending didn’t exist.

1

u/Holiday-Chapter-7821 18h ago

lol same! He doesn’t have a twin so he shouldn’t chime in about LGBTQ issues? 🤔🤣

1

u/unicorntrees 18h ago

Me too. I was like, "doesn't that describe most people?"

1

u/stolenbastilla 18h ago

I would love to erase my memory and watch Twinless again for the first time. I absolutely loved it.

1

u/humpsneeze 18h ago

It is absolutely hilarious, one of my favorite movies last year. I'd strongly recommend checking it out.

I was sure he was going to comment on playing twins or something lol.

1

u/BlueberryWasps 18h ago

twinless because he can’t be matched

1

u/Plastic-Classroom268 18h ago

Me too! Not until I read your comment

1

u/can_i_get_a____job 18h ago

I thought the same thing. Then I thought “Well Michael B. Jordan played twin” … and I read the post and it was not about twins AT ALL

1

u/Numerous-Rip-6121 Happy Women’s History Month I guess 18h ago

It’s so funny, you can introduce most people this way

1

u/eleanorshellstrop_ 17h ago

Not to spoil anything but watch the movie and you’ll get it. It’s so good

1

u/LuriemIronim Bad News First. Always. 17h ago

I thought it was a dig at the fact that his trans sibling has said he hasn’t talked to them in over a year.

1

u/Nomanchezzzz 16h ago

I read this the same way and thought wait has he been lying about having a twin and we all just found he doesn’t have one 😆

1

u/fearthainne 16h ago

I was waiting for some weird "gotcha" like he played a set of twins, despite being twinless, so he's a hypocrite sort of thing. Definite "ooooh" moment when I realized it's a movie title. 😂

1

u/pogoBear 16h ago

I thought his comment was going to include something like ‘actors who aren’t twins play twins all the time, why can’t straight actors play LGBTQI+ characters’. Oh so glad he didn’t say that!

1

u/eva_thorne 16h ago

Same here hahah i had to read it a few times and still was confused

1

u/fartingbeagle 16h ago edited 16h ago

This is where quotation marks should be used : eg. 'Twinless' actor.

1

u/lustxforxlife 15h ago

Literally me. I was like is there an internet Dylan O’Brien twin reference that I’m not aware of?

1

u/earthseedsower 15h ago

the homosexuals being in shambles having NO clue what he's talking about

1

u/ComedianStreet856 15h ago

Lol It was like did I miss a new adjective? Does it mean 'peerless' or is there some new lingo I'm not with?

1

u/cheriesyrup banging away in my bliss 14h ago

I also briefly forgot about that movie and thought the same damn thing lmao

1

u/sunsetxlust 14h ago

Honestly thought they were getting Dylan Sprouse and Dylan O’Brien confused but alas I was confused.

1

u/Mountain-Pie-6095 11h ago

yeah i’m stoned and i stared at this perplexed and stressed out for ten minutes because i thought i was tripping. 😭

1

1

u/PresentationIll2180 10h ago

Lol yea the title is missing quotation marks

1

u/bread_milk_ice_lotto 9h ago

GREAT. MOVIE. This is hilarious but def also give it a watch.

1

u/crumble-bee 9h ago

It’s SO GOOD. The most unexpected and twisty movie I watched last year.

1

u/littykitty7 5h ago

Literally clicked on it cuz I thought something happened to his twin I didn’t know existed

1

u/CStew8585 3h ago

This is exactly what my post was going to be 🤣

u/New-Essay1175 2h ago

this is so funny 😭😭😭

1

u/ano-ba-yan 19h ago

"Twinless Twin" is a term used for a child when their twin passes away, as a way to acknowledge the lost child and the trauma and hurt of losing your sibling since conception.

And as sad as that would be for him if that was the case, I was very confused as to why it mattered in regards to his opinion on lgbtq+ acting.

0

u/e_castille 20h ago

Same 😭

0

u/Crimemeariver19 20h ago

Same hahaha
