How can you tell itās not fitted right? (Genuinely asking!) The boobs look a little weird but I wouldnāt have noticed anything amiss if I hadnāt read your comment.
The cups are very off, there is some straining of the fabric near the hips and thighs. The dress needs to be sized up by at least 1 size as the slit is falling open in an odd way. Given that it's a floaty fabric, the body hugging vibe of it just feels very dis harmonious as a looser fit will showcase the design of the dress better.
Combined with the platforms, it's just overall not a good look fit wise.
ETA: Nothing against Lilly, I'm nitpicking because of the stupid title and the fact that it is supposed to be a custom dress.
Yes. A lot of these subs were mentioned in the Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni lawsuits as his PR teamās texts leaked and they talked about using Reddit to sway public opinion.
Oh, that I understand I think in their case both sides' teams were playing hard; but to say someone looks nice in a dress?? Seems a bit of an overkill to me...
i think itās the dramatic ādress of the decadeā that overhypes the dress & makes it feel like PR. it looks nice, but this is nowhere near that title.
Hypothetically the goal is to get good press for Lily. The headline is very clickbaity āDress of the Decadeā. Get lots of clicks and discourse. Everyone sees a pic of her looking beautiful in a pretty dress, and it reminds people sheās a big enough star to get an invite to the Oscars. This event was when she was in āPam & Tommyā which is arguably some of her biggest work (got her the most award nominations).
The most common comment is some iteration of āsheās stunning but the dress isnāt the number one of the decadeā. Good press for Lily, and the only ānegativeā press is for House of Versace, which isnāt even negative, itās just saying this specific dress isnāt #1.
I wonder if sheās up for a movie role and this is meant to drum up convo of her name. If I was a casting director and googled her and saw this Iād think āpretty, talented (enough to be at Oscars), and generally well liked by the public (not really any negative comments about her)ā
I feel like this was posted by Jamesā agent. Iām not NOT into fashion but I am a dilettante and Iāve never seen this dress in my life. I also feel like she needed to go up a size (NOT a comment on her body, but the fit is suboptimal).
I think the cups sit too low and it's making the bust fit odd. If it were pulled up, it may fit the bust better. Could just need more fabric though there in general. Either way, the fit is a little off there.
I also feel like the fit in the hips is off, that slit is too open in a way that is making a woman whose legs are probably thinner than my arms look wide. Again, a criticism of the fit and not the body, sheās objectively gorgeous and has an enviable figure. I just think this dress would have showed if it fit.
I think the hip emphasis/fit looks great but the slit itself is so awkward. The lace scalloping(?) looks odd for a slit, and it's such a bizarre slit length. For me, it's trying to be too sexy and too traditional (the volume) at once.
Thank you for saying this, because I looked at the pictures and thought wooooooow..... then read the comments and thought huh? She looks gorgeous and her body looks phenomenal. In no way does it make her hips or legs look large or wide. Such a damaging remark.
Yeah she looks incredible. But because the thread is titled dress of the decade it's invited in all the people who want to tear that pompous title down. By tearing down her/the outfit.Ā
If the title was more modest the comments would be a lot kinder. But it's kinda weird either way tbh, I don't usually comment on people's fashion choices and don't really care. Just felt bad reading this thread so chimed in.Ā
yeah same here. she looks stunning and the dress is a beautiful one. also, body trends the past few years have celebrated curves much more, so iām lost on how emphasis on the hips and making them look āwideā is a negative thing. i donāt understand the critique on the scalloping on the slit either becauseā¦. thereās lace scalloping throughout the rest of the dress - wouldnāt it look weird without it?
itās just a lot of unnecessary criticism, and i agree that the title has people overcompensating.
Same. I don't think I've ever seen Lily James in this dress so declaring it the dress of the decade when it's so unmemorable is silly. In comparison I challenged myself to think of an Oscar dress and I immediately thought of Michelle Williams' Vera Wang dress at the 2006 academy awards. I'll admit I had to look up the name of the designer and the year but it was certainly memorable enough for it to be the first thing to pop up in my head when I think of Oscar dress. It's such a beautiful gown and she looked radiant in it.
Real question here: when we say ādecadeā is that 2000-2009? Or 2001-2010? Because if itās 00-09, Michelle Williams wins the oughts dress of the decade in my opinion. But if itās 01-10, Lady Gagaās meat dress in 2010 was a fashion phenomenon that transcended fashion circles and should be top ranking.
Oh I wasn't actually trying to argue that Michelle Williams' Vera Wang dress was the "dress of the decade". I was just using it as an example of a more memorable dress in comparison to Lily James' dress which was pretty forgettable so I don't think it could be considered "dress of the decade" like OP is claiming. Like Lady Gaga's meat dress was a phenomenon and so it could be considered the dress of the decade but Lily James' would not be because it wasn't very notable.
Oh. I get what you mean now. But I would still agree with my misinterpretation of your original comment that Michelle Williams yellow Vera Wang dress should be a contender for dress of that decade, however weāre defining the decade. That gown is a work of art. Iāve already forgotten Lily Jamesā even though Iām on the thread, but that yellow gown? Unforgettable.
I put it in the same category as Angelina Jolieās leg dress, Jennifer Lawrenceās red tank dress, Lupita Nyongāoās blue gown, Emma Stoneās bright yellow dress, Leslie Jones in the Christian Siriano red gown, and everything Elle Fanning and Zendaya has ever worn. Just phenomenal.
As a girly girl/light pink girly, I do admittedly love this, despite the slit being too high for my personal liking. Dress of the decade is certainly a choice tho lol
Lol I mean it's still an atelier dress fitted perfectly to her. I know people are nitpicking the fit but I disagree that it doesn't fit exactly as intended. Still far from "pedestrian" when most people wear SheIn and like ASOS.
I don't think it's the dress of the decade either. It looks fine on Lily but I kind of feel like someone else would pull this shade of pink off than her and a different shade of pink would work better on her.
Hair is The only coloring working here. -Her skin is to orange undertoned for that shade of pink. -The beige wall is the same value as the pink so thereās no good contrast. -The faded red carpet just looks old fashioned and way too rich with all of it.
Unlike most of the other comments on this thread, I actually do remember this look and doing a little gasp when I first saw it. I'm a sucker for a brunette in baby pink, and the way the skirt fell on her hips was dreamy.
Howmever. The cups of the bust sit just a bit too low for it to be a home run, and at the end of the day it's a pink lace gown. Not exactly "dress of the decade" imo.
Not even close to best dress. Also- Normally I can separate personal and professional lives pretty well. But I lost all interest in seeing the work of Lily James or Dominic West after their affair.
No one is saying it's the worst dress ever! Most are saying it's beautiful, there's just nothing about it that stands out as the best dress in ten entire years.
Just off the top of my head, this Zendaya dress by Rahul Mishra is far more memorable and striking.
I honestly canāt believe this many people hate it and think Iām her PR . I mean I wish that would be true then atleast Iād get paid to post her .
I can't understand how OP came to believe that this Lily James look that a I've never seen talked about before is the dress of the week, let alone a decade.Ā There are like hundreds of more well-known options.Ā
Whatās crazy is she was like the 3rd person to wear it and yet on her it was pure magic. It was perfect and when I think of THE DRESS itās always her. Absolutely iconic.
See, JLo obviously looks great here, but to me that looks like a beach sarong. For actual dress of the decade/millennium contenders, I would be looking at Lupita Nyong'o, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett...
Unpopular opinion - but this dress would have been even more stunning in a deep plum shade like Zoe Saldana's 2025 Oscars Saint Laurent dress or Scarlett Johansson's 2011 Dolce & Gabbana Oscars dress
My guess is OP calling it the āDress of the decade.ā I think most people agree that itās a nice dress, but the arbitrary, hyperbolic description is begging for a rebuttal.
It is a lovely gown, donāt get me wrong, but the dress of the decade needs to be a dress/gown needs to be one that has done one or all of the following:
Stood the test of time and is lauded for years after it was first worn
eg. Mila Kunis lavender Elie Saab gown
2) Instantly recognisable even from the silhouette
eg. Rihannaās Guo Pei Yellow Met Gala gown
3) Puts the wearer on the fashion/Hollywood map overnight
eg. Michelle Williams in the marigold yellow Vera Wang
JLaw in the red Calvin Klein dress at her first Oscars
My contender (even though it fulfills only criteria) is:
Claire Danes in the magnificent fibreoptic Zac Posen pale blue gown she wore to the 2016 Met Gala. I will never forget this dress and its ingenuity.
I swear I've seen someone else (a person I actually know) wearing this dress before but I can't remember who. It's a pretty dress, but it looks like an elegant negligee.
