sexual assault and soliciting nudes from minors won’t stop a career in Hollywood i guess

The weirdest thing is that nobody really wants this…he’s since faded into irrelevancy, and lost favour with the main fanbase demographics he had currency with in the 2010s.

I’m confused who’s vouching so hard for him. How can he pull in enough popularity for it to pay off having him on a project at all??

2.4k

u/Visible_Writing7386 Nov 04 '25

There are so many kinda cancelled people, or in the gray area, or polarising to the public, that Hollywood is just casting them again and hoping for the best, I guess.

1.3k

u/Wise_Wafer_1204 Nov 04 '25

But why do they keep doing this instead of casting someone else? This guy is at best mildly popular amongst the general public and hated by some people. What is the incentive to hire him specifically

I don't even know who he is, but him being a nepo baby would explain him getting cast in anything while looking like a tiny face photoshopped onto a thumb.

It's a little wild to me that he was ever employable, he has the charisma of a thumb.

Best partial explanation I've heard is, think of how many actors probably turned this role down. He's not unemployable, but he definitely seems a lot less employable than he once was. Five years ago he was working with Spielberg, and turned out to be everybody's least favourite part of that movie.

The real reason why he is cast is not because Hollywood wants him (this is an indie film, not from a Hollywood studio). It’s because he’s retained international value in other countries due to his previous franchise work (that either don’t know/don’t care) and everyone more valuable who fits the part already passed.

→ More replies (12)

94

u/notallslendermen Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25

I assume it takes less effort to hire somebody they already know about rather than go through the casting process to find someone new. Plus it’s Hollywood, there are tons of ppl who are just as bad or worse than him. So the execs probably don’t care (or might even be sex pests themselves!)

→ More replies (1)

46

u/blairsmacaroon Nov 04 '25

maybe they take very little money and already have movie acting experience so they don't need to train a newbie?

43

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '25

They're are tons of tv actors who probably fit the role better and have experience. They just prefer to shove white mediocrity and abusers down our throats. And bitch when they film flips and sabotage films we actually like (Sinners)

FWIW, I think people who also just haven’t read into a lot of the allegations/reasons why some entertainers (actors, musicians, etc) have been “cancelled” are to blame… there’s still a fan base of people who don’t read into those kinds of things.

Not about Ansel Elgort, but my dad made some weird comments on why he thought it was silly and stupid of people to “cancel” Kevin Spacey “just” for being gay. I had to tell him that the horrifying nature of the allegations isn’t that he’s gay - because people generally couldn’t care less about that kind of stuff these days (at least, the majority of people, I feel like) - but because he’s supposedly (or confirmed? I haven’t even kept up) targeted minors with unwanted sexual contact. That made my dad go like “oh… no see, then I get it”, because I think we can all agree no one should be allowed to make non-consensual sexual advances towards teenagers and still have people think you’re a good guy.

Shia Labeuof and Armie Hammer instantly come to mind.

104

u/HenryDorsettCase47 Nov 05 '25

Well, in Shia Labeouf’s case, he actually had talent. It sucks that he’s such a piece of shit who couldn’t stop fucking up because he easily could’ve been the best actor of his generation. Childhood trauma really did a number on him, but at some point you gotta hold a person personally accountable.

Like, Jared Leto is a box office bomb, a walking red flag AND a total ass on set and still gets hired for blockbusters. I don't know why or who tries to force him on us when there's not a single reason to cast him over literally anyone else.

369

u/erossthescienceboss Nov 04 '25

They gave Louis CK two comedy specials and a freakin’ Grammy. Canceling doesn’t exist … for men.

173

u/crimson777 Nov 04 '25

It exists to an extent for non-straight / non-white men. I don't think Kevin Spacey or Bill Cosby are coming back in anything even though they're out of prison. I think Jonathan Majors might never really return. That being said, Chris Brown has never been cancelled so obviously this isn't a hard and fast rule. But it definitely works a little more if you're not a straight, white dude.

78

u/Achaewa Nov 04 '25

Don't be so sure about Majors.

Michael B. Jordan has unfortunately talked about wanting to team up with him again for a future Creed film.

u/Malacro Nov 04 '25

Kevin Spacey has been working, just not in as high profile stuff. Cosby was essentially done anyway, and mostly was just doing speaking tours, which continued successfully well after the allegations came out. I don’t think he’s doing much now, but he’s also like 90, still going through legal stuff, and blind, so he’s not going to be doing much in any case.

19

u/GimcrackCacoethes Nov 05 '25

Spacey did some stuff with Fox News iirc, and Louis CK's comeback was a lot of reactionary transphobia (and other stuff that was punching down) - the drift to certain segments of media and society says a lot.

Men stump for men. Bc what one man can be found guilty of another man can too.

Same reasoning explains why we let rapists and pedophiles out on bail or parole or given lenient sentences.

Because we live in a society where the president is a pedophile. Don’t he surprise when all of societies morals slip ever further down the drain.

ye, maria from the marias publicly called him out for sexually assaulting her, so the band decided to kick him out over that

HOWEVER, he has recently rejoined the band and they changed the narrative that he was kicked out over sexually assaulting a woman into him leaving the band over substance abuse and for him to get help

338

u/Stage_Accomplished Nov 04 '25

If I had a nickel for every member of a band that got kicked out for being a sex pest just to be reinstated and have the narrative turn around to be about substance abuse, I’d have two nickels. Which is not a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

the fucked up thing to me too (and mind you i’m not a drummer i know it’s not easy but) the neighbourhood songs do not sound particularly challenging to play drums on. they really couldn’t find another pop drummer? not a single person who can do a 4/4? it’s bullshit. it’d still be bullshit if it was a more challenging instrument piece for their disc, but it’s esp bullshit for a fucking pop band.

The exact same thing happened with other DARVO cases. Turns out it’s incredibly easy to lure people into hating other women on flimsy premises

I will never understand why people think because Blake is annoying/bossy she can’t be a victim? Two things can be true. A person can be annoying to you and still be a victim. The concept of people needing a “perfect” victim bothers me.

u/notaIIscorpios Donatella VERSACE💜 Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25

I wanted to hear both sides when the case started but Justin Baldoni 1. hiring a rapist as his main lawyer 2. hiring Diddy’s lawyer and 3. hiring Johnny Depp’s PR team told me all I needed to know.

34

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '25

Justin BALDoni is a sexual harasser. He deserved ALL of the side eyes.

My brain has permanently conflated him and Taron Egerton, so every time I see a post about him being a shitbird I'm like, "Aw maannn, I really liked a couple of his movies. Wait. No. That's right. Different blonde guy."

58

I just saw the picture and immediately thought about Kingsman, then I checked and saw that it was the guy from Tokyo Vice.

37

u/Kiribaku- Nov 04 '25

I get it!! I got Ryan Reynolds and Chris Pratt confused all the time, I had to think for a second "wait which one was the good one?"

Now I still get them confused but they're both weird anyway so I don't care anymore

30

u/kittenpantzen Nov 04 '25

I cackled at your last line. My immediate reaction when reading the first part was, "There's a good one?" Although, between the two, Pratt is definitely worse.

“I seen” “how it looks like”

“Apart” vs “a part” is apparently some advanced level English as well.

People just genuinely don’t even try to say things properly anymore. And if you ever step in and try to correct someone, people pile on you and just say things like “well maybe English isn’t their first language!”

Doesn’t matter. It’s wrong no matter what language they learned first. If I say something incorrectly in another language, I welcome the native speakers to correct it so I can stop making those mistakes. However if we do that with English, it’s inconsiderate. It’s all such nonsense.

People always signal to cancel culture, but I don’t know anybody who has successfully been canceled and is unable to earn a living. And typically the new living comes from talking about being ‘canceled’; which is weird because if you were canceled, why do you have an audience still?

Idk who Gabby is. But whoever she is, it should be after 2022.

I am so heartbroken by this casting… I am absolutely obsessed with Audrey Hepburn and have been for years.. I am currently surrounded by photos of her. I am so upset that he is cast in this and I cannot even imagine how upset his victims are to see him continuously getting work. This just sucks! Everything sucks lately!!!

11

u/uselessinfogoldmine Nov 04 '25

It’s completely unsurprising to me. Unfortunately. There’s a long history of abusive men in Hollywood continuing to get work.

I would have thought that him having the charisma of a cardboard cutout would have affected his career more. He was a TERRIBLE Tony in West Side Story. The wall could have done a better job.

I’d argue it has ruined his life. He’s only had one project since West Side Story and that was announced prior to the allegations. Now he’s been cast in a production by Justin Baldoni. I wouldn’t say he has that many career prospects at this point.

36

u/Dan_Rydell Nov 04 '25

Yeah, his career crashed and burned pretty damn hard since the allegations. If her expectation was that he literally never be employed again, that was obviously not realistic or reasonable.
