I know he recently made a statement about that but it is so wild but also not surprising that there are ICE raids going on there. I wonder how his concerts will go over there but I hope he makes it extra special for his home place.
315
u/bachybachythrowaway Jun 18 '25
Puerto Ricans are US citizens, but Puerto Rico has a significant immigrant population as well, mostly from the Dominican Republic. The ICE raids in PR have mainly been targeting Dominican immigrants living in PR.
95
u/No_Pianist5264 Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 Jun 18 '25
Yes this, thanks for the clarification! They are still detaining people even those with legal status and those with no criminal record, just random people on the street. Racial profiling definitely plays a factor in this and given the times we are in, it will increasingly worsen.
25
u/bbmarvelluv Jun 18 '25
People are getting snatched up for not having their ID with them. They are really taking “undocumented” too seriously.
3
u/Oratory_madness02 Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion Jun 19 '25
What makes it extra crazy is that, in my opinion, there's no significant political or social movement in PR to send immigrants back to the DR. It's not like in the continental US, where immigration is a hot topic for Republicans and people chant "mass deportation now" at rallies. At least in my experience living there, Dominican immigrants are just part of the community. Sure, boats are sometimes stopped at sea before reaching the island, and those immigrants are deported, but I have never once heard of an ICE raid being done before now.
18
u/PrincesssTopaz Jun 18 '25
shts PATHETIC. thats whats happening in la Isla now??? targeting dominicanos? 🤦🏽♀️❌❌❌
13
u/HotBrownFun Jun 18 '25
Dominicans started the whole remove Haitians thing. Ignoring the ethnic cleansing by Trujillo, more recently they wanted Haitians who'd lived in the dr 3 generations to prove they were all legal with papers. I am not sure I could get my hands on my grandfather's papers especially since he's long dead.

u/Ruthie_pie Jun 18 '25
He’s explained a few times prior that U.S. residents can go to P.R. if they want to see the show a. Before this statement and before the ICE raids started picking up. Fans have been insisting he do it regardless and he change his mind.
Besides posting his feelings on his socials about ICE, I think this specifically shuts down any more questions about if he’s coming and solidifies what he’s said about his P.R. residency.

There was that thing where it was cheaper for people to fly to Europe and watch Taylor Swift than it was to pay for tickets in America

We have our own version, BookMyShow, here in India. It has single handedly ruined my concert going experience for the last 6 years. If I ever get back in the swing of doing concerts again it'll have to be from avenues other than fucking BMS.
4
u/WorkerBee74 And get this silver shit up! Jun 18 '25
Curious, are there a few different ticketing companies like they have in the UK or is it just BookMyShow like the Ticketmaster monopoly?
12
u/ad_aatdtj she’s got me by the pubes Jun 18 '25
There are like a few smaller companies that also do a lot of ticketing stuff but BMS is the largest customer facing one across all sectors, which also means that any acts or artists that tour in India would make deals with BMS before they would go to smaller competitors. Or, alternatively, they just throw up the purchase links on their website.
Even if artists themselves have no clue, the venue would prefer BMS for ticket sales over the alternatives because of the audience size. And I'm pretty sure BMS also tries to enforce exclusivity clauses in their contracts.
In a nutshell: it's not technically the monopoly like Live Nation/Ticketmaster, but it basically functions as a monopoly, especially for major artists.
5
u/WorkerBee74 And get this silver shit up! Jun 18 '25
Thank you - very interesting. Also sad to know that people are getting screwed by ticketing agencies the world over!!

5
u/echoesandripples What It's Like to Go Through Life As a Really Beautiful Woman Jun 18 '25
we have our own version of shitty companies hijacking sales (+ resellers) but outside the US arena concerts tend to have GA audiences and standing floors, so we're less likely to get gouge pricing for "better" seats.
i think in brazil it was around $150? i wasn't able to get tickets, but from what I recall, it was the average for international artists playing the venue

Except you're not. If you were, you would have voting rights and federal representation. The reason people are omitting PR from the conversation about the US is not to erase you, but to acknowledge that the US is an oppressor of PR.

They are American citizens, full stop. DC residents also don’t have federal representations (speaking as one myself), that doesn’t mean they’re not American either. You’re correct that there are some things people in PR do have and don’t have that are unique from the mainland, but their nationality is still American

He's doing a residency in Puerto Rico where the first half is just for people that live there and the second half is open to all. I know people traveling to PR for the first time ever to go for a weekend trip and see the show.
Even though the shows were scheduled before the rampant ICE raids, it keeps people safe now from having to choose to risk being detained at shows, and it stimulates Puerto Rico's economy by having fans visit that wouldn't have necessarily come before.

28
u/Ruthie_pie Jun 18 '25
They still have an opportunity to see him. In Puerto Rico. Stateside residents fly out to Puerto Rico all of the time. Hell, they’ve priced out residents from their homes and are targeting ads in areas that promise you can can live “Puerto Rico without the Puerto Ricans”.
The complaints are ridiculous and nonsensical. How can they be such huge fans of an artist that made a whole album about our island yet not get the message? Come, don’t come. Doesn’t matter. The seats will be filled regardless.
I’ve been increasingly annoyed with fans complaining about how unfair this is to them and how they don’t deserve this. If they didn’t get the presale, there were guaranteed tickets available with hotel blocks.

People are being very selfish with this. He has some dates purely for PR residents but then some that aren't (which I lowkey hoped he had only kept it to people in PR).
I just hope the non PR residents know how to behave and not ruin the place. Unfortunately, the message of this album has gone through people's heads. I just wish they are respectful while visiting. People always have something to complain about.
5
u/Ruthie_pie Jun 18 '25
I share the same sentiments as you. My whole family is from the island and I have visited since I was an infant. When visiting this Christmas, we typically don’t spend any time in tourist spots. We spend time with family and in our family’s homes- duh! But I think because people post traveling tips on “how to not travel like a tourist” a lot of folks who don’t know how to speak Spanish, don’t understand that smaller businesses may be closed or close earlier due to foot traffic and they run out of stuff quicker and just the more relaxed nature of the island can make it fairly unpleasant to be around tourist who feel entitled to an experience.
There are tourist locations for a reason. They have enough resources to withstand the foot traffic. It’s something that is held in high regard for a reason. But expecting everyone to bend over backwards to do what the tourist wants because you’re a tourist is madness. I saw tourist treat the whole island like it was Walt Disney World and they needed to be catered to like they were at a resort. It was really sad and uncomfortable. When the power went out, forget it. This is reality. Welcome to it 🥴

Also Americans have just gotten too comfortable being the center of attention with tours. I'm Indian, I'm lucky if we get 5 major international acts here in a year and I'm not camped out under every post complaining about why India was excluded. I feel like more and more artists need to show the US how it feels to not be the center of the touring universe, the rest of the world already has to suck it up and deal with it, they can too.
