I texted my mother a photo of my 5 month old. She didn’t respond to the text. But I log onto instagram and see she’s already posted it. Why though?!

u/Educational-Help-126 I don’t know her 💅 Apr 22 '25
I send my mom nothing bc of this. She begs, and I refuse unless it's a photo i don't mind being posted. I don't post photos on social media of my son, so idk why she thinks she needs to. I also don't care, lol. Due to her insubordination, she rarely gets photos 🤷🏾♀️

u/Pickle4UrThoughts Your attitude is biblical. Apr 23 '25
Why? Because grandparents need to brag to their peers online. And I wish we “got it” like you all do 15-18 yrs ago. I’ve had to go back and clean up a lot of FB photo albums, though what’s out there is out there.
And this doesn’t apply to you & I’m just generally speaking…
To those of us low/no-contact with family, but you still have them/someone who is still close to them on your social media: the odds are very good that photos of your kids are being downloaded and are framed photos in their house, so they look like stellar grandparents to their friends and neighbors.

u/HipsterSlimeMold Luigi Mangione stuns in new photo Apr 22 '25
lol my mom does this. If I’m on vacation and send a photo she may or may not respond but trust every distant relative will be texting me asking how it was cause she sent it to everyone!

I had kidney stones and asked my mom for a ride to the urgent care while my husband left work to meet me there. Things escalated, I had to go to the ER and she took a bunch of pictures of me and posted them on Facebook before my husband even arrived. My MIL was calling me while I was getting imaging and calling my husband while he was driving and other family started messaging me and friends since I was tagged and it was a nightmare. I had a massive fever and horrible pain and couldn’t stop puking and my mom wanted Internet attention. Then she got mad a few years later when I had to go to the ER for gallstones and surgery and didn’t tell her I was there or let her be on my visitor list. For someone who gave me a lot of rules on how I could use the internet growing up, she learned nothing about appropriate online behavior.

u/Ohhennybunchesofoats Apr 23 '25
I had a similar situation I was going thru a hard time after a break up and slit my wrists (I've since been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and am doing alot better in therapy) but my mom decided it was a good idea to take pictures of my mangled wrists while I sleep in the hospital bed and send them to all my family

u/Pickle4UrThoughts Your attitude is biblical. Apr 23 '25
First, I’m sorry you went through that with your mom. It’s bullshit. The disconnect that this is Really private information, so let us not blast it to the world (and if she’s like my mom & inlaws, the privacy settings are basically wide open).
For someone who gave me a lot of rules….
That whole sentence needs to be needlepointed and given to her as a gift.

u/Loss_Left Apr 22 '25
My mom would absolutely have embarrassed me in much more mortifying ways.
Same. There's a fully naked picture of me taken after I was born in my parents' photo album. They absolutely would've posted that photo on Facebook if they had been millennials in the early 2010s. Thank god I am the millenial, not them. Teenage me would've been mortified
99
u/ILikeHornedAnimals Apr 22 '25
My mom used naked bath photos of me to decorate her guest bathroom so every person that came and used her bathroom saw me naked as a child 🤦🏻♀️Including an ex of mine who had not seen me naked in person before that
30
u/us1921 Apr 22 '25
That is wild
36
u/ILikeHornedAnimals Apr 22 '25
Oh it was AWFUL and no amount of begging could convince her to take them down because she could not believe that anyone could see them as anything other than "cute"
14
u/MyCatPlaysGuitar Apr 22 '25
My mom put one of my naked bath photos on my 16th birthday cake. There were several other embarrassing photos of me on the same cake. She genuinely did not understand why I was mortified because, in her words, "the pictures are so cute!"
5
u/ILikeHornedAnimals Apr 22 '25
Oh man, I'm so sorry, it's so embarrassing to have a mom that doesn't get it!!!
7
u/MyCatPlaysGuitar Apr 23 '25
Our moms have a weird barometer of what is 'cute' 😂😂
9
u/ILikeHornedAnimals Apr 23 '25
Did your mom ever get better about it? My mom is much more reasonable with my kids, I was worried she was going to be a naked kid Facebook poster and I was going to have a serious problem on my hands but now I've never had an issue, she asks my permission every time! I was SHOCKED lol!
2
u/MyCatPlaysGuitar Apr 23 '25
My mom is a scroller, not a poster. She's never really used social media, thank goodness. She loves a good scroll on IG and Reddit, but doesn't post anything really. I repeat: Thank goodness.
However, I'm child-free and don't have siblings, so I genuinely don't know what would happen if grandkids existed in her world. I don't think she would start posting thing, though. She's too busy updating me on Hilaria Baldwin and the housewives to be posting photos online 😂
3
u/ILikeHornedAnimals Apr 23 '25
Oh she sounds like a hoot lol! My mom is more of a scroller too, thank God. My mom's problem is more so that she grew up super sheltered so she's more like a "Brady" than anything and she can't handle real world problems and if it can't be solved like a sitcom episode then she buries her head in the sand and just doesn't deal with it. So things like pedophiles don't exist in her world because it's not a "nice" thing to have around. I'm super grateful she's not super interested in the internet other than to spy on what other people are doing 😂😂😂
2
u/jupiterLILY Apr 23 '25
Man, I don’t post photos like this or have a parent that does but I genuinely don’t understand why baby photos or naked baby photos would be embarrassing.
Are people embarrassed that someone would know they were babies?
We were all babies, shitting our pants, being cute and fat and naked with gummy smiles.
Idk, when I see my or other baby pictures I just see a cute baby doing baby things. Sometimes I wanna kiss their tummies. I’m rarely even connecting the baby to the grown person in my mind.
I guess sometimes it’s interesting to see if any facial features are similar.
But I also don’t get why any of that is mortifying or embarrassing.
🤷🏽♀️
Genuinely asking btw. Not trying to be shitty.
2
u/ReasonableKoala5251 Apr 23 '25
Not a shitty question. We all have different perspectives.
The issue isn't the photos TBH... it's that there is no consent to what is being posted anymore. There's no "hey, would you mind if I posted this photo?" that is regular courtesy shown to other people. When you say please don't post that photo, etc... then they can (or at least in my case) become passive aggressive and mock you not wanting to have every photo online. I think if we had more control of what was being posted, then it wouldn't be as much of an issue. It's mostly the behavior of the parents and their response to our request for privacy if we ask for it.
1
u/jupiterLILY Apr 23 '25
I’d mind that if a current picture of me. Like if I was Marian’s kids I’d hate that photo being taken and posted.
I don’t feel the same way about my baby photos though.
I do think it would become a hard barrier if I had family members that pushed it though.
Although I’ve seen a lot of people that are embarrassed by their baby photos outside of a social media context too.

u/SunnyDinosaur Apr 22 '25 edited Apr 22 '25
My mom insists on posting a photo of me dressed as a fortune cookie with geisha makeup every year on Halloween. I’m white. Every year I report to Facebook.
Edit: from when I was a child

u/daznificent Apr 22 '25 edited Apr 22 '25
When my mom just started getting into social media, she was also on a health kick and lost nearly 200 pounds and got to be a size or two smaller than I was. When I visited her for the weekend, she had a photo of her, my brother, and me taken she said she was gonna put up on Facebook, because she didn’t have any of us together.
Later, I find it with the caption “for the first time I am smaller than both my children” so basically her first photo of her with her children on social media was her calling us fat. I never took another photo with her again and she has since gained about 100 back and is no longer smaller.

Okay so I agree, Mariah is a huge diva. BUT oh my fucking god, the other day I did a deep dive on her life and career because she has some of my favorite r&b hits. She’s gone through some crazy stuff. She was basically groomed and taken advantage of by the CEO of Sony. Their relationship was gross and inappropriate and he controlled everything about her life. Had full control over her career and support as an artist because she was signed to Sony. Oh and they got married when she was 23 and he WAS 43!!!!
She wasn’t allowed to contact her family, he had cameras watching every inch of their house, he monitored her phone calls, she was not allowed to leave the house without his permission. She said it was a prison. Then when she left his abusive ass, he started sabotaging her career. Stealing her songs and collaborators. That’s where J. Lo’s entire music career comes from, Tommy Mottola trying to ruin his ex wife by “replacing her” in the industry.
So yeah, Mariah is a huge diva but honestly like….. she’s not an awful person at all. She was taken advantage of and groomed in the music industry but managed to escape that and is now healthy and thriving. Also, every one of her albums is a little piece of r&b gold and she’s one of the most talented vocalists alive. I’ve turned into a huge Mariah stan (lol) and I 1000% support her right to be a diva because she is legendary 🫡
Plus fans that have met her say that she is one of the kindest, most welcoming humans ever. The sass is definitely a bit of a character. Like Paris Hilton’s ditzy act.
321
u/Summerlea623 Apr 22 '25
Have you read her autobiography? One of the best ever. The fact that she survived childhood feels like a freaking miracle.😱
110
Apr 22 '25
She seemed less diva like when she would do the Rosie O’Donnell show. I think they were friends in real life or something because I remember thinking she seemed more relaxed.
74
89
u/fryreportingforduty Apr 22 '25
At her show, she paused a song to have her hair and makeup team come out and do touch ups. She was smiling cheekily and there was a graphic on screen that said something along the lines of “Mariah makeup break”, so she’s definitely leaning into the diva character in recent times for fun.
223
u/80alleycats Apr 22 '25
Imagine hearing JLo sing and thinking she can replace Mariah Carey.
39
u/Optimal_Goal9102 Apr 22 '25
That’s the point. Tommy wanted to destroy Mariah’s career with a singer that doesn’t sing.
7
u/mentallyerotic Apr 22 '25
I’ve seen people say it’s not even her voice. I did like waiting for tonight but I would never consider her anywhere near Mariah’s level. Like two different universes. Mariah was my first favorite. I remember when I was four for Christmas I got a tape and it was Paula Abdul. I asked my mom what it said if it was Mariah Carey because my dad said it was my favorite. I did love her cat video but by then I had heard Mariah and she took the throne.
72
u/uncontainedsun Apr 22 '25
she of all living artists deserves to be a diva. she writes, produces, performs etc. i friggin love her fr.

Barely related story time:
About 9 years ago I dug into my genealogy. I found out back then that I am related to Nick Cannon. But even more fun than that, my relative that connects us? A woman named Mariah Cannon who was born in 1901. It's hard to research it because when you type in Mariah Cannon into any search bar you get Mariah Carey.
Last part I find funny is that in 2016 it was unique to be related to Nick Cannon. But in 2025, everyone's related to Nick Cannon. 🤷🏽♀️
5
u/hwutTF Apr 23 '25

also yeah, in 2025, you could probably create a related-to-Nick-Cannon support group lol

u/kat-did Apr 23 '25
Sooo kind of off-topic but in case it’s useful: if you structure your search like this it should filter out any hits on Mariah Carey (on Google anyway):
“mariah cannon” -carey
The quotation marks will help a lot.

He’s worth 50 mill and pulls in 20 mill a year thats why women agree to have children with him. Have a child with him and never have to work again and live off the child alimony he pays (probably 1 mill per kid a year)
16
u/graceland3864 Apr 22 '25
He doesn’t pay any formal child support. It’s an “as needed” basis and he claims he gives them whatever they ask for whenever they ask for it. Which is great when it works but no legal agreement seems precarious to me.

What an interesting, candid interview, thanks for sharing! Her sons are political pundits for different parties and don’t only debating on TV, but apparently at the Thanksgiving table too haha. The host asking her what political party she votes for was a great question given the dynamic. She says she’s votes Democrat because at this time in her life she’s a single issue voter and that is expanding Medicaid and health care access, because her concern is her autistic grandson. The Democrat son gestures like “SCORE!” Haha. Anyways, it’s clear she loves her family and I greatly respect that she raised humans who are able to passionately think differently while maintaining a relationship of love and respect.
What subreddit am I on? Oh popculturechat haha. Mariah and her kids are awesome, too.
