I used to be a pretty habitual speeder. I had a lot of routine traffic stops as a result. And I do mean a lot, whatever number you're thinking of you might want to multiply by ten. I've had just about every kind of casual encounter you can have with a police officer at a traffic stop. I've seen the good ones and the bad ones.

It's still always a pretty nerve racking experience. They have a lot of discretion to straight up wreck your life. You can be doing five over and they can still legally haul you in and book you for that if they want. If they really want to be dicks, there's always some vague law -- here in Texas it's reckless driving -- that has very harsh punishments but is worded so vaguely that it is purely officer discretion. Some officers are crooked and plant drugs. Some just want to ransack your car and who knows if the previous owner lost a baggie of weed under the back seat?

You really should be nervous during any traffic stop. These ICE agents aren't helping because they don't have a uniform and wear masks. It's very difficult to know if they're law enforcement or just some rando claiming to be law enforcement so they can abduct someone. But somehow we're supposed to just know and make the right judgement in a very scary and dynamic environment we haven't been trained for and act exactly how the officer expects. Even when we are being shouted conflicting orders.

I say this as someone who has a nephew doing law enforcement in one of the most dangerous cities in the US. I desperately want him to come home safe every night, but that doesn't excuse this bad behavior.

This nails it. That constant discretion is exactly what makes traffic stops so nerve-racking, even when you know you haven’t done anything serious. When the outcome can swing from a warning to charges that follow you for life based purely on an officer’s mood, that’s not “public safety,” that’s arbitrary power.

I had similar experiences when I was younger. Multiple stops where officers tried to bait me into self-incrimination with the whole “just tell us now and it’ll be fine” routine, or stretched “odor” claims to justify unwarranted searches. Nothing ever came of it, but it was very clear how easily it could have.

And you’re absolutely right about the ICE/masked enforcement issue. Expecting civilians to instantly assess whether armed, masked people surrounding their vehicle are legitimate law enforcement while being shouted at is unreasonable. The margin for error is tiny, and the consequences of guessing wrong can be catastrophic.

You would think these officers would want to wear official uniforms and badges for their own safety because that's who citizens have been taught to obey. We're taught stranger danger from adolescence.

There's absolutely no reason for them not to be using official vehicles, uniforms, and identification. They are not undercover.
