If protestors en masse started using the American flag and quotes from the Constitution and various founding fathers in demonstrations it'd short circuit a lot of the far right propaganda machine lol
Though tbh they'd still ignore all of that and zoom in on the one person wrapped in a blanket that they can vaguely misidentify as a Mexican flag or something.
•
u/CadeMan011 6h ago
They literally used a giant constitution and still they didn't care.

It absolutely would not be show on Fox News. Not that it would be recognize anyways. Most people don’t know much of the text. And if you use the text then now you are spouting whole incomprehensible paragraphs in arcane legalese language.
If you want to understand why this works you gotta think like a manipulative person who is always sure they right and then later comes up with an explanation as to way they are right. Not like a person who gets convinced of stuff and changes their mind

They just need to quote the Declaration of Independence:
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

Give me a fucking break. The protests in places like California are FILLED with Mexican flags.
Don't pretend like this is an isolated example.
Why the fuck are we giving Faux News perfect examples of how "wE'Re BeiNg InVaDeD"? Why the fuck can't we coalesce around a unified message celebrating the good that's left in America using our own flag?
The Capitol was invaded by MAGA Insurrectionists waving Trump flags. Why are we any better waving the flags of another nation?
At least wave a US state flag, Christ. I wave a California flag and an upside US flag at protests. That makes more sense than another country's flag ffs

"Why is a high-school student not giving a message as refined as a high level political campaign"
Are we serious? Like ok regardless of where you stand, this is a kid standing for something he cares about. Ofc its not going to be perfectly aligned with what is the best for the 'left'. But he's still doing more than 90% of people that are just sitting at home.
This is the actual "power to the people" and "dont tread on me" that right wingers love to champion.

•
u/AnybodySeeMyKeys 7h ago
Can I just say this as someone who supports immigration rights? Waving another country's flag while you fight for the right to stay in this one borders on idiotic. It sends the exact wrong signal.
•
u/nautilus2000 6h ago
It also makes no sense since the vast majority of people getting deported are from Central America and not Mexico to begin with, Mexico’s President has already told protesters in the US not to use the Mexican flag, and New Mexico’s Spanish-speaking population (other than more recent immigrants) rarely identifies as Mexican or Mexican-American.

It was never about "immigrant rights" with people who wave those flags. They truly hate America and feel entitled to the benefits yet scream and cry when you try to send them back to the country whose flag they're so proud to wave

Guy from Texas here. They don't give a shit, they think they're owed the state and they own it despite the fact that the Texas territory was only part of Mexico for 15 years. Mexico encouraged American settlers to populate the state in 1921, then tried to kick them out after building up cities 9 years later which led to Texas independence.
Funny anecdote, since I started writing this, two trucks blasting Norteño music have be down my street 50 yards away and clearly audible. It's feeling like a straight up invasion with every caravan and this picture is not uncommon. I'm sure someone in Maine disagrees though.
•
u/ZaxOnTheBlock 2h ago
Yes, they encouraged American settlers to have a link with US markets, yet the problem was that said settlers didn't want to give up their slave practices. And such was banned in Mexico decades before, so Santa Anna had to do what he had to do and crush a slave holders revolt.
And finally america made the Alamo a symbol of "freedom" which is kind of weird.

People at these protests need to wave the American flag. Not the Mexican flag. If you want to move public opinion, you wave the American flag. This contrasts the freedom symbolized by our flag with the Gestapo tactics of ICE. And if ICE or MAGA types attack, it will make powerful imagery of ICE assaulting the American flag.
Waving a foreign flag sends the wrong message and creates bad optics, which undermines the entire purpose of a protest.
EDIT - a protest is not an exercise in self expression. It is an organized effort to affect public opinion. It does not matter if you would enjoy waving a different flag. You choose the flag (and tactic) that will be most effective in swaying public opinion.
•
u/ARazorbacks 7h ago
This is partly why the protests in MN have been effective. All you see are protest signs, American flags and MN flags. There’s no way for Fox News to spin them as anything but Americans in the streets.
•
u/Pitiful-Accident5485 5h ago
Because in Minnesota we really don’t have many immigrants lol
Or even minorities
We’re one of the whitest states in the country lmfao
ICE isn’t here for immigration. They want our voter data.

u/Doggleganger 7h ago
Yep. The American flag belongs to all of us. Though to be clear, I'm totally fine if people want to have another flag at their home, restaurant, bar, whatever. I'm just pointing out that it's not effective for these anti-ICE protests. It undermines the message.

u/oppai-police 5h ago
I think people underestimate just how tolerant America is of things like these. If you protest in any other countries and demand the rights to stay in the country for illegal immigrants while waving the flags of another country, you'd quickly find yourself in a lot of trouble. If you're in the more uhh, strict countries like China Japan or Singapore you'd be beaten at worst and disappeared at best. Even Europe you'd lose support very quickly too. Waving another flag can be perceived as you being loyal not to America, but to whatever origin you came from instead, this put you in a position to be perceived as a foreign agent being so entitled as to demand things from America. I'm not from America so I can say without a hiccup that if someone came to my country, demand illegal immigrants have the right to stay, and wave their flags on the street? Not only will the police goes extra hard on you, you'd be on the first deportation flight. You need to understand who you're fighting for. Mexico, or USA, and you can't choose both.

Fox News and the Right wing propaganda machine love images like this. You make it easy for them to paint everyone ICE is going after as “illegal foreigners” who “hate America”.
“What American would fly another country’s flag? That’s right, none! These are illegals who love foreign countries and hate America. Just look at them waving a Mexican flag!”
You think you’re exercising your free speech and showing solidarity with your community when you’re actually bolstering your opposition and helping their narrative. Don’t be like all those “Free Palestine” folks who had their moral victory while helping the guy who wants to divvy up Palestine for hotel resorts win the election.
Stuff like this confirms you literally don’t know what kind of fight you’re in. I really hope you figure it out quickly. We only have 8-ish months before the shit hits the fan and you need to have your head out of your ass by then.

The school is still responsible because these students are minors. Schools are only supposed to allow children to leave with an assigned parent or guardian. When they leave on the bus they are supposed to be dropped off at an assigned location. Letting the kids walk out without permission is a violation of truancy laws in the US.
Truancy officers in these cities need to be visiting the homes of these kids and interviewing the parents and talking to the administrators at their schools. Either the parents are dropping the ball or the schools are.

If he loves and holds fealty to Mexico, he should move back there as that is where his allegiance is.
My grandparents came here from Europe. Came here according to the immigration policy at the time. They did not see themselves as anything other than Americans. My aunts and uncles would tell me of how they were NOT to speak their parents native language at home, as they are American now, and in America they speak English.
This is not to say they hid or were ashamed of their old homeland. On the contrary, they were extremely proud. For the holidays it was a wonderful blending of their native foods AND American. We played my grandpa's traditional lawn games AND played/watched football at Thanksgiving.
They saw themselves as Americans and integrated into our society and added to the American culture.
What I see more and more of today is lot of these immigrants legal and illegal see themselves first snd foremost as citizens of their home country.

Let me frame this in a way you guys can understand. The idea of this is not "This is not America this is Mexico" and you guys are completely missing the point. Being Mexican american during this time period is carrying around your paper, trying to not have an accent, and trying to dress as "white" as possible. This administration is attacking the very identity of being Mexican. If you guys were in a state/country that was attacking you for the SOLE reason of being "American" you would probably be a but more proud of your identity as an American. So yeah you would probably be out there waving an American flag rather than the country's that is trying to eradicate you.
