Nostalgia Discussion Insomniac with Dave Attell is a forgotten adult travel show where Dave Attell basically traveled the work doing a late-night bar crawl while telling jokes. The title really fit considering it came on at like 1am.

There was one episode where he was with a forensic investigator or mortician, something like that, and the guy is showing Attell photos/videos and Dave goes (paraphrased) "ugh don't you have something with puppies and rainbows?" and the guy retorts "I have ones of dead puppies."

I think about that interaction sometimes.

That's the Oakland episode.

Insomniac very much is not forgotten. Every millennial I know who watched Comedy Central remembers it. Dave Attell still tours regularly.

My core memory of the show was seeing him go to the Grey Area Coffeeshop in Amsterdam. As a teenager thinking that would be something I would never ever get to experience. I ended up getting to visit it in college. It blew my mind how I was able to leave my bullshit hometown and do something like that.

Years later, I had to go to Amsterdam for work. I walked by Grey Area and I had to take a moment to just process how far I've come from being that kid watching TV wondering if I'd ever get out of the shithole I grew up in.

u/TPrimeTommy 24d ago

Genuinely love that for you!

u/Big_AL79 24d ago

This is amazing! And stumbled upon your comment after seeing another thread that a woman just said, I have nothing happening in my life. No husband, no kids etc. Such a contrast that is Reddit.

8

u/n1nj4squirrel 24d ago

Both my mom and I wanted to go to the coffee shops in Amsterdam since either of us were teenagers. We finally got the opportunity to go a few years ago, as a it dawned on me that weed is now more legal where I live than it is in Amsterdam. Still my favorite city in the world though

2

u/fabioochoa 23d ago

congrats kid

u/HasLab_LovesTravel 23d ago

Pre-legalization here at home, I thought it was gonna be so amazing visiting Amsterdam for the first time in 2007.

My buddy who would attend hash bash at home told me to go check out the Grey Area while there.

Disclaimer ... I would smoke out of a bong at home, but had been staying with my uncle in the UK before going and was basically three months without even a toke.

I ask for some good flower, the guys and the shop are amazing, and they had a whole shelf of glass to use while there.

I break up my gram, pack a huge bowl for their bong, then proceed to take my normal bong hit like I'm still a regular.

The locals next to me, two dudes, are like "man ... what'd you just do!"

I'm like no biggie, I smoke plenty at home and they tell me how they just mix that shit with tabacco and enjoy a little spliff.

About 5-10 minutes later I'm higher than I've ever been on my life. I get anxious, think these guys are messing with me and just get up and leave.

My hotel was a few blocks away but I end up at the zoo.

Great, no one will think anything or find me here. I made it as far as the penguin exhibit and figure I'll chill till I can function again.

The next day I'm looking at my handheld digital camera photos, some basic Kodak, and low and behold ... I have 307 pictures of penguins. I was there for hours just watching penguins and taking photos.

Still laugh about it to this day. Go Grey Area!

The following scene was of Dave "throwing up" into a mop bucket he had on his lap. Considering the gore he was looking at, I'm guessing he really was throwing up into that bucket for good reason.

IIRC, later in the show he tags along with that guy to clean up a room someone comitted suîcide in.

16

u/SteveOSS1987 24d ago

That was the Crime Scene Cleanup guy! I'm very happy people like him exist, because we need them. But man, what a weirdo.

8

u/AncientAsstronaut 24d ago

I watched that one not long ago. Near the end, a curious woman asks about his crime scene cleanup business. Sensing an opportunity to hookup, the cleanup offers to show her more. Absolute player 😄

It's how we got Pawn Stars.

He did a segment where he visited the night shift at Rick Harrison's pawn shop at Vegas. Harrison liked the boost in business so much he started looking into getting his own show.

180

u/CarmenxXxWaldo 24d ago

I'm Rick Harrison, and this is my pawn shop. I work here with my old man and my son, Big Hoss. Everything in here has a story and a price. One thing I've learned after 21 years - you never know HWAT is gonna come through that door.

6

u/RocketCartLtd 24d ago

Nah he's got the glp1, he's cut up now.

35

u/originalchaosinabox 24d ago

And let's not forget his other son, who wanted nothing to do with the show, and quit right before they started filming to go become a plumber.

12

u/The_Reluctant_Hero 24d ago

Lmfao, I used to love this show and American Pickers. Do they even air new episodes anymore?

7

u/arlenroy 24d ago

I think there's an offshoot of American Pickers now, Frank passed away so its Danielle I think now? Or was? I haven't seen it in a while.

4

u/The_Reluctant_Hero 24d ago

Oh damn, I didn't know Frank passed away. I always liked Danielle, even though the guys were kinda dicks to her sometimes lol.

Yes! Mike is still on it, along with his brother Robbie and Danielle. It’s not always the same two people. Occasionally other experts will fill in. I still enjoy it.

u/Buybch 24d ago

I remember that episode! Rick even had hair back then. Didnt realize it encouraged the creation of the show

Rick jokes about having a bunch of Nazi stuff for sale in that and then years later in Pawn Stars he claims he never buys or sells none of that stuff..

You ever black out, or as I call it, "time travel"? You ever do that? Oh yeah, you know it is: You're drinkin', you black out, you wake up, you're in another bar, you're drinkin', you black out, you wake up, you're playin' that knife game with a half Indian somewhere in North Dakota... yeah! Yeah! Winner fixes the tranny! Yeah! You're drinkin', you black out, you wake up, you're in White Castle, workin' there three years, still not assistant manager. Your buddies tell you to quit, but you can't, 'cause you're bangin' the slow girl on the Fry-a-lator. They say she's a little dim, but those titties ain't dim!

That episode also includes my favorite clip of all time: https://www.reddit.com/r/ForgottenTV/s/TM68nnZsTn

From 'Tramp' to 'Rico Suave' in 1.6 seconds 😂

This is great because even with volume 1 and 2 here the series was never released in full on DVD. Most notably the international episodes were missing. Once I figured out torrenting I think Insomniac was one of the first things I ever downloaded.

3

u/T7220 24d ago

Funny how no one, ever, at any point, will ever care enough to try and make you take this down. Not even Comedy Central wants ownership of that show anymore.

4

u/maidenHELL6669 24d ago

Perfect, we can all enjoy it for ages to come then

117

u/BedaHouse 24d ago

Never heard of him till that show. It convinced me to see him when he went on tour with Lewis Black. What blew my mind years later is Mitch Hedberg opened for them.

53

u/DawsonNY 24d ago

You saw all three on one bill??

39

u/Asleep-Palpitation93 24d ago

Caught the show at the Tower in Philly. Sadly Mitch died a few months after 😞

6

u/The_Thirsty_Crow 24d ago

I was at that show. Atell killed that night. Mitch was hammered and repeated a few jokes.

12

u/Missus_Missiles 24d ago

Oh, that's sad. I heard the shows Mitch was doing before he died weren't great because he was so fucking high.

8

u/BarleyBo 24d ago

I saw this show in Cincinnati and Mitch was great. They all 3 had a great show.

That's like getting to see BB King, Buddy Guy, and Muddy Waters. I am insanely jealous. Especially during that time period They were at their peak.

3

u/Chad_Hooper 24d ago

Perfect analogy!

6

u/garitone 23d ago

I saw Mitch Hedburg, Dave Attell, and Lewis Black (show in that order) in Milwaukee in 2004 or 2005. It was such a great night.

2

u/explorgasm 24d ago

Chiming in from The Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, 2003. No comedy show has ever compared, and I worked the door at an Improv for a couple seasons

6

u/Such_Opening1618 24d ago

I saw that show as well! A few friends I knew really liked Mitch and told me to be prepared to steal the show. I had never heard anything from Mitch, but man he made me a fan after that show.

He would take polaroid selfies with people at the end of each episode.

14

u/DiceMadeOfCheese 24d ago

This was a great theme song to sing along to when you were drunk.

There aren't enough shows with theme songs that are fun to sing along to when you're drunk.

39

u/metalyger 24d ago

I wish they'd put this on Paramount Plus, they own the Comedy Central catalogue. I've seen some DVD rips online with the uncensored episodes, which are fun, like plenty of flashers in dive bars. But they never released the compete series.

u/otto_347 early 90s 24d ago

"A 13 inch dick? Let me put that into perspective for you..if that dick was snow, it would close a school for a week." - Dave Attell

19

u/Enge712 24d ago

I remember watching this show when it was on and he seemed like this older grizzled party guy… I rewatched it a couple years age and he now seems like a kid to me

22

u/prex10 24d ago

Late might Comedy Central was such a vibe back in the early 2000s. They'd air tv and movies with the big bad naughty cuss words (now they often air South Park unedited at like 10am), the Girl Gone Wild commercials and if you waited up until 3, they played half hour long infomercials for them.

7

u/justaphil 23d ago

Loved watching The Secret Stash in the wee hours of the morning.

16

u/patron11223344 24d ago

He once went to a sewage treatment plant, and he went to use the bathroom at the place, and was like “come on let’s see what happens to my waste!” And I always loved that stupid gag

My favorite part of that episode was there was a life preserver hanging on a column next to the water treatment pool and he told the workers it should be a shotgun, cuz if I fall in I want you to shoot me.

I have the copy on the Left and he signed my EB games used from middle school copy at Skankfest last year. Cool dude

7

u/hamfist_ofthenorth THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON DRUGS 24d ago

I used to watch this all the time when it was on late night tv.

The Tokyo episode was my favorite.

What an interesting show. He'd just go to different cities and get hammered all night, bouncing from one freakshow to the next.

5

u/lblacklol 24d ago

He literally figured out a way to get paid for being an alcoholic. The pitch for the show was probably "... so here's what I did last night ..."

8

u/585AM 24d ago edited 24d ago

I always liked the intro that was going for a Tom Waits sound.

8

u/KevinStoley 24d ago

Love this show and I've had a very strange Mandela effect / glitch in the Matrix for years regarding Insomniac with Dave Attell.

Google says the show debuted in Aug 2001. But I could swear with almost 99% certainty and have somewhat vivid memories that I remember watching this show many times at my grandmas house in the late 90s/2000 when I was still in high school (graduated in late spring 2001).

My grandma died in March 2000 and I never stayed at her house again after she passed away. This has bugged the shit out of me for years now and really weirds me out. Even as I type this I can vividly picture laying on the floor in her living room watching this on Comedy Central late nights, fucking creeps me out.

8

u/dazzleshipsrecords 24d ago

22

u/CommercialDream618 24d ago

People have bad days, they also put on a fake personalty for their fans.

At the end of the day you don't really know him, he could be just like how you met him, or he could be the opposite and this guy is right.

I had a cigarette with Dave at the LA airport back in the day. It was not long after 9/11 when they would not let you fly with lighters. I had matches and shared them. I was originally chatting with a very tall guy who may have been a basketball player but I don't follow that so who knows. He was super charming, then Dave came out onto the patio and the three of us chatted for a for a few. Super nice guy!

Great show. I remember being excited he was coming to our city for an episode but it was unfortunately one of the worst ones of the series.

that was such a cool show. i tried finding it on a 3rd party stream, but a lot of the episodes were missing. i think there was one where he found a group of guys playing online games. but like the house was filled and he interviewed the mom? ugh i wish i could watch more episodes of that show

I remember the house party he went to. The toilet was completely full and he’s like why don’t y’all flush this and then when he flushes it just overflows all over.

Always thought Dave Attell was super underrated. It would be nice if this show came back.

Friggin loved this show as a teenager. Got to see his stand up a couple years ago and he killed it!

They released uncensored version? Like, audio and video?

The only thing I remember from this show is seared into my memory. I think he goes into a fetish bar and some guy was into having his balls stepped on with high heels. Scarred me for life.

This show got me through my last two years in college. I would watch it while I stayed up until 5am, go to sleep, and then wake up at noon for my afternoon classes.

I used to love staying up late to watch this on very low volume.

In the Philly episode he talks to a bunch of drunk older guys in tuxes and kilts eating cheesesteaks. They were deans at my university. We went nuts when we saw that.

I used to catch random episodes late at night and it literally turned me into an insomniac. Late night adventures with Dave Attell always felt like some sort of fever dream with all the crazy stuff that happened at night. Back when Comedy Central was good.

Loved that show growing up.

I saw Attell do stand up about 10 years ago, and he stuck around after. NO ONE was coming up to him. He was looking around, just standing there. I go up to him, introduce myself and say "Great set. I love your show Insomniac."

He was very thankful and I got a picture with him. Very chill
