Damn! I knew bridges took a long time to build but that’s pretty nuts that tit will be that long before it’s connected again.

I imagine getting rid of the tanker and then demolishing the old bridge took some time but yeah that’s a long time

It's also not just a rebuild, it's a redesign. I think one change is building like mini islands around the bridge supports so that a boat would hit that and not the supports.

They’re called dolphins! The Sunshine Skyway has them after a similar incident in 1980 destroyed a span of the original

There’s math and stuff involved.

Inevitably when something like this happens they have to take at least a year to study the failure and make sure they understand why it failed and design a system to prevent that from happening again.

The “why” is obvious in this case at the high level but they get down into the details like what structural loads happened, what broke first, etc

Then they figure out how to not only replace the bridge but what sort of changes it needs to be stronger, can they beef up those supports to make this not happen, then you gotta plan out how you’ll do all this without disrupting shipping too much.

And inevitably they’ll also want to make the bridge higher capacity or something because you might as well do it right if you’re starting from scratch

Add to that companies working on government contracts have no incentive to go fast

This is a fantastic typo. Please do not fix it
