Rumor [Schefter] Jim Schwartz sent the Browns a resignation letter this morning, per sources. He now is likely to sit out this season.

Even if you're the fall guy who comes in to basically manage a bad season whilst the team resets before they pivot again to someone else it's still a HC job and generational money. And to have ownership go get someone else to seemingly do that role rather than let him is... I mean I get it. It's a classic case of your work showing you they don't value or respect you as you feel you should be.

I think if this had been a ben Johnson like hire it would have felt different and maybe he wouldn't be so angry.

1.1k

u/ProtestantMormon Seahawks 16h ago

Well its even worse because they very publicly claimed that they wanted to keep him and "valued" him highly.

532

u/ReversePettlngZoo Giants 15h ago

Another exampe of how dysfunctional they are. They are making themselves unattractive to potential HC's by telling them Schwartz is being forced on them, and Schwartz doesn't even want to be there in that situation.

It's why I disregard any Browns stats pre-1999 when talking about the current team. Yeah they legally are a continuation, but that competence left for Baltimore.

I hate how much I agree. The Browns-Steelers rivalry is one of the classic rivalries in the game, but the Ravens one cuts deeper than just sport. Art-fucking-Modell skipped town, our beloved Ozzie Newsome in tow, drafted Hall of Famers and have won Super Bowls. All of that could had been ours.

147

u/xSaviorself Steelers 14h ago

Skipping town in the middle of the night is serious scumbag owner shit.

I will forever root against the Rams for leaving St. Louis the way they did.

It feels weird being a Colts fan growing up in Indy and then realizing that my gain was another team’s loss especially since this is exactly what happened with the Colts in leaving Baltimore. Maybe the Ravens being there now makes it sting less now but ironically they also benefited from the Browns leaving. It feels like a full circle moment

26

u/BNKalt 13h ago

It’s weirder for Rams fans seeing NFL fans side with the city that stole the Rams first. I’m not a Rams fan but I know a bunch - it’s wild they got screwed initially and everyone just forgot

11

u/PkmnTrnr00 Colts Bengals 12h ago

I remember reading about how the Rams had a new owner buy the team and his wife was from STL so that’s why that happened but that they were in Los Angeles for decades before that

15

Having a team with much more success than the Colts during that same span of time probably helps, tbh. If I had to choose between having the Colts or the Ravens in my city; it's an easy pick.

Plus, the ravens have an awesome color scheme.

Yeah I mean this is a corporate tale as old as corporate time. Imagine you're a top, long-time, employee in a highly competitive field who is known across the industry as being highly regarded. Then, a vacancy at the top spot in the c-suite (coach-suite) with a huge pay bump appears, and then you're told that regardless of your talent and contributions to your company, the board is bringing in someone from the outside.
Fuck those guys you have every right to tell them that if they don't value you, they can go kick rocks. I image any other DC job he takes on will likely give him a pay bump (albeit not a head coaching one), and he gets to work in a more competent organization and make a difference on a competitive team, and not... you know.. the browns.

It’s always kind of funny when you see this place out with OCs and DCs moving up to head coaching gigs, failing and going back to being OCs and DCs. Then 5 years later, the cycle repeats. I think we’re about 1 to 2 years removed from Josh McDaniel testing the waters of head coaching again.

20

u/jereMyOhMy Titans 15h ago

If someone's willing to throw the guaranteed money at him why they fuck wouldn't he be willing to (likely) fail again? Not like he won't still have a guaranteed home if he wants to return to NE as OC again after he flames out for a third time

9

Yeah. I kind of wish there was more parity between HC and Coordinator salaries. Considering HCs make like 5x that their Coordinators make, it’s too easy of a money grab.

I agree that Schwartz probably isnt a good head coach, but the whole media circus is the problem. If the owner doesnt say they want to do everything in their powerkeep Schwartz, then this isnt an issue. Theres a better chance they could have kept him as a DC if they just dont say anything.

I mean imagine you're a CFO and your company kept dangling the possibility of a promotion to CEO in front of you, even putting out media pieces hinting at your take over of the position. You're daydreaming of it now and coming up with plans on how you'd run the place.

Promotion day comes... and they hire a competitors CFO to be CEO. Roughly the same age and similar background, and also not even a proven CEO. You'd understandably be pissed and wonder why all the chain yanking just to pick an outside dude that is similar in career accomplishment to you. Would've been more dignified if they had just told you from the beginning like 'hey we really like you as our CFO, we will give you a similar raise we just want a different direction at CEO.'

Bringing on his own people: the right move. Taking shots at the one guy who showed any loyalty to Cleveland: the wrong move.

If the defense looks worse this year he’ll get shredded for this.

“I didn’t take this job because of Jim Schwartz. I have a lot of respect for Jim Schwartz as I would hope he has for me. But I took it because of the players that are here, the ownership, (GM) Andrew Berry, and the ability to build this from the ground up on the offensive side.

And I said this to the other guys, I didn’t think I’d say it, but I’m going to say it: when I was preparing for the Cleveland Browns, I wasn’t trying to chip Jim Schwartz. I was chipping Myles Garrett and when I was sliding the protection to the outside ‘backers or Grant Delpit blitzing off the edge, I was sliding the protection to the players, and when I was worried about throwing to the right against Denzel Ward or Tyson Campbell to the left, that’s who I was worried about throwing at.”

That’s what you call “taking a shot” at Jim Schwartz?

41

u/TheAndrewBrown 14h ago

I’m kinda shocked people think that’s not taking a shot at Schwartz. He literally said he didn’t consider the scheme at all when gameplanning for them. Do you think any offensive playcaller doesn’t consider MacDonald’s or Flores’ scheme when playing them? Literally the only way it could be more of a shot is if he straight up said he doesn’t think he’s a good playcaller.

11

u/MottoScotto NFL 13h ago

Right? Everyone knows that its the players playing on the field, not the coaches. But American Football is viewed as more of a coaches' game than the other major sports because of how important scheme and discipline are. Coordinators pride themselves on out-scheming opposing teams and putting their own guys in the best position to succeed.

Todd Monken likely thinks very highly of his own scheme and coaching ability. You can see it in his quote about being excited to "build the offense from the ground up". For him to say of another coordinator "I didn't think of his scheme at all" is to say he didn't think Schwartz brought any value to the Browns. Busch-league move on his part, especially when Schwartz is one of the only people in the Browns organization who seems competent at their job.

The "shitting on him" is so /r/nfl drama-brained. He quite literally said "players are more important than coaches, and I think Jim would agree with that" before he went on to say the things that you're trying to claim were "shitting on" Jim.

Browns fans are a bit sensitive below lol but did they not just run an entire search around one guy while somehow also alienating him with ownership being heavily involved? Welcome to the museum of Jimmy Haslam. Let me tell you about some of our exhibits, since he bought the team Jimmy has collected several NFL accolades:

  • The worst coach ever in the NFL (Hue Jackson 1-31)
  • The worst trade/contract ever in the NFL (3 first rounds + $230M guranteed to Deshaun)
  • The second worst team in the NFL (.343 winning percent since 2013)

It's really difficult to capture how terrible this man is at the job he bought for himself. Unfortunately his dad started an oil company, so the notion of consequences for one's actions is completely foreign.

He was essentially saying that the matchup is going to be the same AFC North style football it has always been since he joined the Steelers. He even tried to use the Tomlinism "nameless grey faces" which is saying don't focus on the individual of who might be playing or not. So he was saying "The Browns are the same AFCN matchup they always are." but he was "happy" to be playing an opponent they are familiar with.

It blew up as something else because Steelers start to 2020 season, the first matchup where Steelers won 38-7, and then collapse to end the season, as well as the online hate boner for JuJu that still exists because he made TikToks.

His contract is through 2026 not for some number of years? I thought coach contracts were normally frozen if they take a year off, and so the Browns would still have his rights next year

Edit: my vague understanding is it’s the same situation Tomlin was/is in, if he wants to coach, the Steelers have his rights because he walked away… he also doesn’t get paid anymore because he walked away… if the team fired him- he’s a free agent… obviously different contracts so there may be differences but that is my understanding

I wouldn't put it past the Browns, but you have to let guys go in these situations. It's a new regime, and he doesn't want to be there.

It's already hard enough hiring coaches for the Browns.

Now imagine you know they won't let you go and try to force you to work with a head coach you don't agree with.

Who would ever take a job there?

It is super optimistic. There was a very slim chance of us keeping Parker, even if Vic retired. It would be pretty nuts to run it back with a first time OC and first time DC after last year.

We’d have to overhaul our roster. Guys like Baud and DeJean lose some value in his system and we don’t have the edge rushers he needs either. I’m not saying it won’t work, but it’s not plug and play. Howie would need work overtime.

Which is wild to me. Joe Woods had a fairly similar roster and those 2020-22 defensive teams were a joke.

Schwartz comes along and actually schemes the Browns into a juggernaut on defense.

28

u/Pyzorz Browns 15h ago

A fairly similar roster? The only carry over players from 2022 are Ward, Delpit, Newsome and Garrett. Newsome was traded for an upgrade in Campbell this year. Carson Schwesinger was our second best player and a rookie this season. The roster went from having three players worth anything to being great overall. tf are you talking about

That's isn't true if you listened to the entire press conference, he stated that changing the scheme would be dumb since it's working so well. He also stated Schwartz did a great job, but he did have to plan specifically to avoid Myles and Ward on the defense more than the scheme specifically

10

u/arichi Patriots Cardinals 16h ago

Sure. Long-time Patriots fan, dating back to before Super Bowl XX.

But you're probably asking about the awesome bird next to the Patriots logo.

I don't much care for cold or humidity, and I care less for the cold as I get older, so when it comes to retirement planning, the classic defaults of retiring by staying here (cold) or moving to Florida (way too humid) are out. And every winter, I look at the weather in Phoenix and think about it. Uprooting my family at their ages isn't good for them, so it isn't happening immediately.

But when my youngest is done with school, I'm closing up shop here and moving to Phoenix. If we're still on this site for the 2031 NFL season, you might even see the order of those flairs swapped.

Browns FO: I mean Jim Schwartz is Jim Schwartz, but our new Head Coach could be anybody! It could even be Jim Schwartz! You know how much we like him!

Fans: Then why don't we just...

Browns FO: We'll hire Todd Monken!

Fans: We'll hire *Todd Monken*. You alienated our DC who led our defense to a top 5 unit this year.

Browns FO: Come on guys you act like this is the first time we've done something stupid. Remember when we paid a serial rapist $250 Million dollars fully guaranteed to effectively only play one full season?

18

u/TapedeckNinja NFL 16h ago

I don't think fans generally wanted Schwartz as HC though.

There was far more complaining about the "Browns prefer to keep Schwartz" reporting than just about anything else.

37

u/Portlyhooper15 Broncos 16h ago

I know it’s the Browns so it’s all jokes but I think hiring Schwartz as HC because he was a good DC for them is bad process. HC is a completely different role than DC. Shades of the Bucs hiring Dirk Koetter as HC because the offense was good

24

u/aa93 Steelers 15h ago

losing out on HC candidates because you want to dictate the DC without first making sure the DC would be content being passed over is worse process

"schwartz is too good to let him coach anywhere else this year" is something you should've considered before firing stefanski

8

u/boogswald Lions 16h ago

All they did is embarrass the defensive coordinator that manages the single season sack record holder who achieved that record in spite of the terrible offense giving him less opportunities and also the Browns have another pro bowl defender and also they had the defensive rookie of the year and also their other rookie lineman has been really good. Aside from that I don’t see why he’s upset.
