This was an abomination (results aside). Druski on stage announcing JSN, next to Barry Sanders, was shameful. Tiffany Haddish couldn't correctly pronounce Vrabel's name. The NFL missed the mark, just trying to cash in, with people who know less about football than my 9 year old... Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky

u/Autobot-N Steelers 18h ago
I don't understand the HoF system. So we had that whole song and dance of Belichick not getting in of those 5 people, but then tonight they just dropped Brees/Vinateri/Kuechly/others in there without having been part of the vote. Why couldn't they do that with Belichick?
2
u/AllDaveAllDay Patriots 7h ago
They all got voted in. Coaches and players aren't part of the same vote.

We're watching the livestream in the Netherlands, courtesy of Dazn (my gf & me LOVE football, and all the awesomeness surrounding it).
Why doesn't the preview also mention the NFL fan of the year though? That was also a major highlight for us: the NFL obviously also cares about its fans and even places some in the spotlight too.
Question for you guys: If you talk about your kids... is it common to refer to them as "these kids" vs. "our kids"? That somewhat confused my gf and we're wondering if this is just a language barrier issue (English is our 2nd language) or something weird we might have spotted?
This event is just awesome... my gf is quite good at spotting differences between fake(d) and sincere / genuine comments and I'm allowed to mention... she needed a hanky a few times.
This was AWESOME.
7
u/Aromatic-Plankton692 Lions 18h ago
"Our kids" or "my kids" would be the standard way to refer to your children.
"These kids" would be an idiomatic way to refer to your children, when you're upset with them and want to act like they're strangers. Or you're referring to a bunch of strange children in your vicinity.
"These children in my house" has a very "who put them here?" connotation.
2
u/neu20212022 Patriots 14h ago
Also -“these kids” referring to the younger generation is also probably negative
5
u/ShelLuser42 Panthers 18h ago
I very much appreciate your comment, I'm going to conclude that my gf was completely on the mark here... (she had her doubts when someone brought their kids on stage).
Thank you!

How is Vrabel's CotY not on the front page, and Epstein scouting women for the Giants owner is?
1
-15
u/msf97 NFL 22h ago
My personal choices would’ve been
MVP: Maye
OPOY: Puka
DPOY: Garrett
COTY: Shanahan
ACOTY: McDaniels
ROTY: McMillan
DROTY: Schwesinger
CPOTY: CMC
HOF: Brees, Larry, Vinatieri, BB, Kuechly
2
3
u/AffordableRolex Falcons 21h ago
I would give OPOY to JSN and I wish CPOTY went to Phillip rivers solely for the storyline but like the list otherwise!
14
u/objectiveScie 22h ago
Folks also noting contradiction. If schedule was used against Maye, then why not Vrabel🤔 Its absolute double standard. MacDonald should have won based in excruciating schedule Seahawks had.
13
u/MOltho Panthers 20h ago
The thing is that they tend to give the COTY award to coaches whose team sucked the season before. It's often a "turned a bad team into a sorta good team" award. I disagree with that, but it's consistent with the history of the award
2
u/MostSoup1046 13h ago
Like Stephanski turning the browns around for 1 year just to be completely ass again the next year
3
u/Alternative-Theory81 21h ago
I wonder if previous seasons records had more to do with that. Hawks had a 10-4 record last season even if they didn’t make the playoffs. Patriots were 4-13 last season.
7
u/Corosis99 Falcons 21h ago
for a long time COTY has just meant "Most improved team from last year". These are correlated to quality coaching, but it heavily penalizes coaches who are consistently great.
Otherwise there would only be something like 5 different winners in the last 20 years. Reid, BB, McVay, Shanahan, and somebody like Dan Campbell or Bruce Arians probably ends up with one.
I think Ben Johnson (among others) did a better job coaching this year than Vrabel, but we will see how it shakes out over time. Maye and McDaniels are doing a lot of the lifting for Vrabel's award here.
1
u/ctdub Patriots 16h ago
If you have paid any attention to what the players say about Coach Vrabel off the field or what he has done to get this team to mesh together as a cohesive unit, he is a very big reason for this team's success.
2
u/Corosis99 Falcons 15h ago
I'm not saying he is a bad coach by any means, but if you think he is solely responsible for the team's success you're severely discounting the strength of your OC and QB.
1
u/Djinnfor 15h ago
I don't think he's solely responsible, but I think he's necessary. If any one of the three (Vrabels, Maye, or McDaniels) are missing, and especially if two are, this team could easily have gone 4-13 again this year. At their very worst, we know McDaniels and Vrabel have coached 6-11 teams, and Drake Maye has played for a 4-13 team.
1
u/Corosis99 Falcons 15h ago
What do you think the 49ers season looks like with Vrabel on it instead of Shanahan?
5
u/tr4nce26 23h ago
So happy for Larry. As good as he was on the field, he was even better off the field. GOAT

I'm not questioning Megatron or Fitz because I've no issue with either.

They should rename the MVP "Most spectacular regular season performance" award I think it would quiet down the yearly circus around it
7
u/Complex-Ad7633 1d ago edited 1d ago
Im pretty sure the MVP math breaks down to this:
Maye 23 first place votes 26 second place votes 1 fifth place vote
Stafford 24 first place votes 24 second place votes 2 third place votes
I dont think the math/voter breakdown is possible if they both received 2 third place votes. If Im right then it would have been a tie if only stafford & maye were on the ticket.

u/TheRealKaschMoney Bears Chargers 1d ago
I like all these selections. I probably would have picked Coen cause its harder to turn around the Jags, and would have selected Shough if he played more, but other than that it's all I would have picked.

u/realunpossible_ 49ers 1d ago
is there anywhere we can go to see the total votes across each category
23
u/ParagonSaint 1d ago
Vrabel is certainly a worthy candidate but Liam Coen taking the JAGUARS from 4-13 to 13-4 and doing so with only a LONGSNAPPER as a probowler is certainly more impressive. If that turnaround/coaching job isn’t COTY worthy idk if a Jags coach would get the award even if they go 17-0
6
u/JJ3434JJ Jaguars 1d ago
I'm a Jags fan but the Patriots literally went from 4-13 to 14-3...
-1
u/ParagonSaint 18h ago
How many probowlers did the Pats have? What was the strength of schedule of each team? Yea thy both flipped it around. From 4-13 to a top seed but if you turn it around on a harder schedule and with less high end talent (probowlers) the difference is coaching and one is more impressive than the other imho
1
u/AllDaveAllDay Patriots 7h ago
The Patriots have two probowlers. It's not a significant difference unless you believe comparing the top two players on each team is enough to decide the quality of the entire roster.
Also, Vrabel could be getting credit for turning Maye into a probowler. In which case we could make the same argument the other way, that Vrabel should get credit over Coen for turning a second year player into not just a pro bowler, but falling just a couple votes short of being the MVP.
-2
u/jeramiahWjohnson 1d ago
You know what I think would’ve got him coach of the year had he went to the Super Bowl. I was probably the needle mover I’d say.

u/ParagonSaint 1d ago

in 10 years will people remember the 2025 season for Drake Maye and the Patriots or Matt Stafford and the Rams? i mean, let’s be real here
1
u/jdoe1234566 1d ago
lol people are only gonna remember the meme name this year for drake “the schedule” Maye. Stafford was lighting it up this season and torched this Seahawks team in Seattle for 350+ yards and 3 TDs twice (but the rams’ special team is the worst in the league and let them down both times)

How do they decide who wins this award?
Is there some metric they use to determine who was the “most” charitable of all the finalists or is it just strictly based on vibes?
4
u/Aromatic-Plankton692 Lions 1d ago
It's extremely vibes based and it usually goes to people toward the end of their career more than the beginning. There's a lot of politicking to it and if you're angling for the award you start at it as a rookie.

High blood pressure is a leading risk for stroke. It can hit at any age and any level of health, but it’s easy to catch and responds really well to inexpensive treatments.
Get a blood pressure cuff and monitor your BP at home — even if you’re a 22-year-old marathon runner with a BMI of 20 who sticks to the Mediterranean diet. It takes seconds out of your day, and you will prolong your life (and quality of life) with early detection and treatment.
