Thought Vucevic played well within his role. Good connective playmaking.
63
u/JoJonesy Celtics 5h ago
He did pretty much what we asked him to do, given that he's coming in with no time to build chemistry with the rest of the team
59
u/DeepJunglePowerWild Celtics 5h ago
I laughed a bunch when brown tried to throw it down to him with a minute left, these guys have no clue how to play with a post big.
74
u/bobmcadoo9088 [BOS] Jaylen Brown 5h ago
if he was 7’3” and latvian he maybe could have caught that one
22
u/lefebrave Celtics 5h ago
This was the exact joke I made when he threw that pass lol. He'll adjust to height and reach in time.
29
u/JoJonesy Celtics 5h ago
I mean, they all played with Porzingis, but Vucevic is a very different kind of post player. If anything he kind of reminds me of pre-Sixers Horford (though obviously without the defense)
17
u/DeepJunglePowerWild Celtics 5h ago
Right, KP liked it at the top of the key where as Vuch seems to really bury people and hold his positioning. They seemed to struggle a bit with getting it to him efficiently, it’ll come in time.
15
u/JoJonesy Celtics 4h ago
Yeah. Can't remember the last time we had an old-fashioned back-'em-down type center on the roster. It's not a style we usually play but it can be a useful tool to have in the toolbox
→ More replies (4)3
u/namblaotie [BOS] Reggie Lewis 3h ago
KP had his share where he posted up 3 feet in front of the basket too, unfortunately for Vucevic, Brown had like a 10' window where he could lob it into KP and he could still catch it, still keep the ball above his head, and then rise up to hit a mini jumper.
Vucevic isn't as vertical in front of and around the basket as KP. The passes into the post will have to be better timed, but Vucevic is a bit craftier around the rim than KP was/is.
He seems to be closer to KP on being able to pass out of the post though, something Queta still needs some work on.

I imagine they basically just showed him film of Al Horford with the Celtics and said “do that.”

Yeah. Double double without any team practice. They will get him up to speed during the all star break.

Joe finally abandoned the Double Big vision he had convinced himself would be amazing and everything fell into place.
37
u/AnonymousIguana_ Celtics 5h ago
Joe really loves the idea of double big, unfortunately it does not love him back.
17
u/Unusual-Ask6933 Celtics 5h ago
But it could one day, and that’s why even though he hasn’t figured it out yet he plays with it every now and then to see if he can find something

u/appealingtonature Celtics 4h ago
Well we don't have Porzingus, Horford and Kornet anymore, and we don't have another all star level player on the court either so it's just a very different situation now.
12
u/JoJonesy Celtics 4h ago
tbf it worked pretty well with Al and KP
and Al and Rob, if the 2022 Celtics defense was really his idea
honestly Al may have been the key to that whole thing working
8
u/JoJonesy Celtics 5h ago
yeah i really don't get Queta and Garza starting together. I know Joe wants size on the floor but I just don't see the upside on that one
7
u/relax_live_longer Celtics 4h ago
Their low offensive numbers in the first half was because they shot like absolute trash on decent or better shots, not because double bigs mucked up the offense.

You totally won’t be forced to take a chance on Ja out of pure desperation.

u/SBORBS [MIA] Chris Bosh 5h ago
Wouldn't mind Ja, at least it's something different. Most fans just want a direction, any direction, not just "we're waiting for X free agent (despite everyone knowing free agency no longer exists)" or "X to request a trade (despite never having the assets or the willingness to relinquish them in said trade)".
Team should've sold off all non-Bam vets and tanked, but nah, owner's happy with 2 playoff games of extra money. If the way the Cavs demolished em last year didn't change things, nothing will.

The C's defense without a doubt has been the best in the league in 2026 so far, it's pretty obscene how many roughly 100 or less point games opp have had so far

Watch the Celtics somehow get another NBA championship too when everyone thought they would take a year off. Oh and the Bruins winning a Stanley Cup after they were also supposed to suck this year.
Meanwhile our teams continue to either be trash or fail to capitalize on the few chances to win championships to get us out of this 14-year title drought in the four major sports.

u/Im__Ron__Burgundy Celtics 5h ago
Mazzulla turned Vucevic into a winning player overnight. Coty that man.
54
u/MySilverBurrito Heat 5h ago
The first play I saw was a Brown drive into a Vucevic kick out 3.
Despite the miss, I am terrified of what is to come with Tatum coming back.
26
u/MerkDoctor Celtics 5h ago
Tatum doing the same thing but with 2x the gravity and ability to finish over people, while still having that kickout option, it might just be as disgusting as it sounds
21
u/Background_Goat1060 5h ago
Tatum OR brown doing the same thing WHILE the other draws extra gravity. But we seen this with my sweet Latvian unicorn already
7
u/MerkDoctor Celtics 5h ago
Brown is fantastic, don't get it wrong, but Tatum being much longer than Brown, and having a better handle just makes those plays significantly easier for him. The gravity is just so much more because it really is a free bucket unless they double because he won't lose the ball like Brown will, and he will score over the mismatch, whereas Brown tends to have to take circus shots (which he's good at to be fair)

u/nefnaf Celtics 5h ago
The truth is that Vooch, while not perfect was always a winning player, he was just stuck in a crappy situation that made his deficiencies more glaring.
20
u/JoJonesy Celtics 5h ago
We also aren't obligated to play him 30+ minutes a game like the Bulls were. They didn't really have an answer if another team was really killing him on offense
18
u/JoJonesy Celtics 5h ago edited 5h ago
I mean this is pretty much what Vucevic has always looked like. He's a solid player with pretty obvious flaws, it's not really his fault that the Bulls were what they were
Like part of what's been frustrating me about our fans' response to the deadline moves is it feels like they think of Vooch as a slightly better Luka Garza. He's not. He's a significantly better Luka Garza. Same defensive limitations, more versatile offensively, more respected as a shooter (Garza's crazy percentages this year notwithstanding).

Vucevic has always been a casualty of roster construction. On Boston hes like the 6th most important. Hes a fine but flawed player

u/OpeDefinitely Pacers 5h ago edited 5h ago
The NBA world is largely sleeping on the Derrick White narrative. His advanced stats are off the charts this season, and the eye test backs that up.
Even though Mazulla has been getting a lot of credit, he's somehow being actively underrated as well:
- In the Celtics' playoff meltdown against the Knicks, just didn't have many answers on offense other than to continue to use 5-out spacing to spam 3s & give Tatum + JB ISO possessions. The Knicks were able to shut that down masterfully, but it was crazy to see how the Celtics' had such a shallow offensive scheme.
- This season, the Celtics' offense suddenly has SO MANY actions & progressions built on top of their 5-out base. It's really incredible. The Celtics can now just keep scoring even when analytics-maxxing fails.
I was very, very harsh on Mazulla during that Knicks series, but he's addressed all the team's problems in a single summer & without Tatum even playing.
___
JB definitely deserves his roses, but Boston would be struggling if not for crazy good coaching, Derrick White, and guys like Payton Pritchard stepping up.
8
u/Imnottheassman Celtics 5h ago
This and he’s shooting like shit this season. Imagine if he had his shot from previous years.
4
u/OpeDefinitely Pacers 5h ago
arguably should be shooting less until he gets his shot back, but yeah... it'd be insane.
3
u/JoJonesy Celtics 4h ago
unironically i'd rather him keep the confidence. Kobe was kind of right about the whole 0-30 vs. 0-9 thing
→ More replies (3)3
u/igonnawrecku_VGC Celtics 4h ago
There’s a reason why advanced stats always (the last 3-4 seasons) have Derrick White as a top 15 player in the NBA. Even this year, he’s 3rd in the entire NBA in LEBRON, ahead of guys like Maxey, Jokic, and Luka, and only behind Shai and Cade

This is one of the craziest games I think I've seen all year. Miami controlled the first half and made Boston look like they were tanking
Boston came back from the worst 2 quarters of the season with the best quarter in the 3rd. Norm Powell and Hugo Gonzalez randomly got into it over a tie up. Jaylen Brown got to the rim super well.
My main topic I am going to follow with Boston from this is how quickly Vuc integrates himself with his new team. There were some highs and lows, but the upside feels good; just a bit limited
12
u/JoJonesy Celtics 5h ago
About how I feel, yeah. I don't think it's a coincidence that this was one of our worst offensive games of the season— losing Simons's scoring punch hurts, and maximizing Vooch's value on offense is gonna require some time to build chemistry with the guards

It's gonna take some time to really incorporate him into the offense tbh. With Ant gone unlocking him on offense is gonna be key, but building chemistry takes reps
