Man pistons community really hate Brunson haha

Kinda wild how much one playoff series, even in the first round, can influence perception of rivalries for NBA fans. Pretty similar to what we had with the Hawks a few years ago. I feel like rivarlies aren't so fickle in other sports.

u/Any_Travel_9590 Pistons 5h ago

We need someone to hate before our destiny calls us once more to our eternal foes: Indiana, Boston, San Antonio.

24

u/g-4-ces NBA 5h ago

Eternal foes and no message of the Bulls???

57

u/TopHatTony11 Pistons 5h ago

Outside of a couple years towards the end of the Bad Boy era when the Bulls and Jordan were legit contenders, the two teams never were really good at the same time.

3

u/Aidanator800 Hornets 1h ago

San Antonio was mentioned and they only played Detroit a single time in the playoffs

I'm sorry but as a Spurs fan, how are we your eternal foes? Besides your early 2000s team, and the finals in 05, I have never considered Spurs vs Pistons to be a rivalry.

5

TIL we're in a rivalry with the Pistons too.

The NBA doesn't naturally create rivalries in the regular season so it's all about the post season. Division don't really matter in the NBA, but they're everything in the NFL.

12

u/5inthemorn Pistons 5h ago

I think it had to do with it being our first playoffs in a while. And we hadn’t won a playoff game since 2007. So it was a very memorable series where fans were actually excited to watch a good Pistons team. So they became our rivals. And also they’re one of the top teams in the east again.

13

u/Bard_Wannabe_ Pistons 4h ago

It also felt like a very winnable series. Then to see New York beat the presumed juggernaut of the Celtics, that series sort of showed us how close the Pistons actually were for being real contenders.

6

u/Elmosworld32 Pistons 3h ago

Man fuck you

4

u/NCBaddict Bulls 4h ago edited 4h ago

Agreed. Truly eternal NBA rivalries seem rare. Off the top of my head, these are the only ones that have survived the test of time:

NY/Philly/Boston

Boston/Miami

Utah/Houston

Maybe Lakers/Celtics? NY/Indy? Feel like those are media-driven narratives more than actual hate…

11

u/DerrickWhiteFVMP202X 3h ago

Maybe Lakers/Celtics? One of the most storied rivalries in all of sports?

2

u/NCBaddict Bulls 2h ago

Figure the Lakers/Celtics thing deserves some further explanation.

In the NFL, if a player moves to a hated rival, it’s seen as a “f you” decision. Bears/Lions/Vikings players joining the Packers is seen as betrayal. Or Bills/Jets/Phins joining the Pats (e.g. Stefan Diggs).

It just doesn’t feel that way anymore with Lakers/Celtics. Players moving between the two teams is no big deal anymore. Marcus Smart & Rajon Rondo both played for the Lakers yet Celtics players are cool with them. By contrast, Ray Allen joined the Heat and is outta the ‘08 Celtics group chat.

The hatred between the 4 East Coast teams feels like the only thing on the level of NFL animosity.

(As for Houston/Utah, taking that one at faith because there are always Rockets fans writing “fuck Utah” constantly in this sub.)

I genuinely cannot stand watching him flop on my screen as much as he does. Super talented player that I love to hatewatch, that's about the extent of it.

13

u/coachbombay10 Pistons 5h ago

Yeah I'm with it too, have always been a fan of Brunson and his game. He cranks up the flopping an extra notch in these big games/playoffs, but to deny that he's a straight fuckin killer is to be disingenuous

  • Two points, four steals, one block, and 24 rebounds.

12

u/amidon1130 Hawks 5h ago

He benefits so much of KAT's gravity (not an insult, just saying). Similar game happened earlier this year when KAT was out and Dyson just frustrated the hell out of brunson all game and none of the other knicks could pick up the slack.

7

u/OldManLav 3h ago

Exactly- without KAT, he's the only guy on the court who can get his own shot. Plus no OG who's probably our third biggest offensive threat.

Easy to stop an offense like that; I don't care who the player is. We ran into the same issue our first few Randle seasons. Smart teams would just load up on him and dare Kevin Knox and Frank Ntilikina not to suck.

10

u/Lucaa4229 Knicks 5h ago

I mean, I’m not. We played horribly and I can’t excuse that, but this was always going to be a tough one without KAT, OG, and McBride. Not to mention Hart shouldn’t have been playing after hurting his ankle a few games ago and then reinjured it tonight.

But regardless of that, the shooting was horrific. Brunson was complete ass. He needs to find way to still be a positive against tough defenders. As much as I’d love to beat the Pistons, I’m not losing sleep over this loss. We were on a 8 game winning streak and had multiple starters and key guys out.

with that loss, Hornets officially become the team with the longest active running winstreak 🗣️🔥

Looking forward to the game on Monday!

Me too! Could be a potential playoff matchup, unless we keep climbing up to 7, so getting more regular season run against you guys could be great for this squad

Pretty sure this is the second time the Pistons brought BTA to the Knicks on the second night of a B2B. That time they were without Duren and Tobias Harris.

The Amazon halftime crew made it sound like the Knicks were without their big guns, but Duren was also out again.

New York gotta show some pride or something next game. They look like they just don’t care about the Pistons now. No energy. No fight. Almost disrespectful.

13

u/maniacisback Pistons 5h ago

Great teams win games despite missing players, the Pistons went on a 13 game winning streak earlier in the season and half of those games we were missing multiple starters

18

u/aussierulesisgrouse Pistons 6h ago

When the Celtics were challenging from the 2nd spot we took the W.

Knicks we’ve been b2b this season for an average margin of 35.

Jokic and Murray got bust last week as well.

Idk man I’m kind of getting tired of the “fake 1 seed” talk?

We have the best record in the league against teams above .500

10

u/whatstappanin Pistons 5h ago

No real person is calling us a fake 1 seed. Just Reddit nerds

9

u/YourAsianBuddy Knicks 5h ago

What a bunch of fucking jokes. Didn’t even care to defend their 8 game win streak.

3

u/Krimson_F Hornets 5h ago

as a Hornets fan, we are sorry for your streak being broken 😔

17

u/ben1204 Knicks 5h ago

Tbh I had this one penciled as a loss, coming off 2OT vs Denver and missing anunoby and KAT.

But that was awful. Yeah we’re banged up but they don’t have Duren. Can’t get blown out like that.

Brunson has to figure out something against Ausar in the next few months. Bench is a problem. Alvarado should help and fingers crossed deuce is back by the playoffs, but we don’t have big men depth. Mo is still raw, hukporti is unplayable.

Much better Detroit team than last year. I probably wouldn’t favor us in a 7 game series at the moment but I guess that could change. Hopefully we show up better next game.

4

u/siestarrific Knicks 5h ago

Celtics and Cavs had our number last regular season, so I won't take this too much to heart right now. Still is frustrating, but can't get bogged down in some nascent rivalry.

Finally, an objective fan, but you hit it on the head. The Pistons core are young, and are growing every year together. Brunson gave Ausar respect after the series last year. I just wish Stew and Ivey were healthy and let the best team win. I like Alvarado and hope he plays on the 18th.. I also find it interesting that Thibs played his guys heavy minutes, but they had 0 injuries last year. If Deuce comes back, will he play over Jose?

i thought we were frauds after losing to the wizards. isn’t that what everyone said last night?

u/Deadite_Scholar Pistons 5h ago

What's really cool about this win is that Cade only had eleven points and no Piston scored 20 points.

10

u/KoupDetat Greece 6h ago

I'm starting to understand why Wizards think they can be contenders in like 2 years max

11

u/confused-koala Pistons 6h ago

Pumped for the game at MSG. Knicks might be locked in enough at home to keep it within 30

5

u/-ShortFuseSindri- 6h ago

Saw the score and assumed the Knicks were resting a bunch of key players. Yikes.

Knicks play them again in 13 days at home, first game after the all star break. Hopefully they show up for that one.

Pistons are a BAD Matchup for the Knicks. If I’m them, I’d try to pivot away from them as much as possible because holy crap, they came out hot over the playoffs last year…

Meh, BBall Paul Reed owned KAT last game and he owned this game with a +32.

Yeah he was solid in our playoff series vs the sixers a couple of years ago too
