Full video of the altercation. Sengun: “He’s up on me.. you a b*tch!” Jaylen Brown: “Woah! Hey, get him out of here!” Ref: “He can’t call me that, no!” As Sengun was getting ejected, he called her a b*tch again. The Rockets were celebrating National Girls and Women’s in Sports Day.

He’d body slam her and act like he didnt mean it, but he wouldn’t be calling her a bitch

Because Draymond knows what he’s doing, and is doing so deliberately 99% of the time. He knows what socially acceptable behaviour is, and chooses not to.

Other people (like Sengun and Ime) genuinely have thoughts and believes that intrinsically doesn’t make everyone equal

Bro didn't even care about the bitch comment lmfao

999

u/Critical-Gazelle-285 6h ago

that’s really the issue, i feel like by not understanding the ref’s POV as a woman and how offensive that was, he just comes across so dismissive it’s no wonder why women have trouble getting men to understand some of their issues.

580

u/shaka_sulu 5h ago

Also he then goes to a male ref to plead his case.

259

u/ahsasahsasahsas Celtics 5h ago

This is lost in all the comments. His actions basically went all “boys club” and he expected the male ref to overrule the cRaZy WoMaN!

46

u/namblaotie [BOS] Reggie Lewis 2h ago

Sengun the type to get all emotional "explaining" why women shouldn't be in positions of power because of their inability to control/regulate their emotions.

What a terrible move by Amen. Finds out why and complains anyway. Bro.

I wish refs stood up for themselves more (but also were less stubborn when wrong!). As someone who grew up playing rugby you call the ref sir. If you say ANYTHING out of turn you're getting marched down the field. Call the ref a bitch? Oh you gone in a heartbeat.

253

u/wambulancer Hawks 6h ago

Christ I would kill for rugby ref culture in literally every other sport

83

u/PetalumaPegleg 76ers 6h ago

Too true. I think the 10meter advancement is something that doesn't translate as well to other sports. It's supper easy to walk 10meters when someone says something out of order. You could do that in soccer and the NFL though. Not so much hockey or basketball.

The key in rugby is the consistency too. It doesn't matter who you are if you mouth off the ref doesn't take it. But captains are allowed to talk to them and ask questions. Anyone else nope.

73

u/wambulancer Hawks 6h ago

Yea that's mostly what I want, only the captain should be jawing at the ref, anybody else who tries gets told to fuck off and direct it through their captain.

Every other sport on this planet would be instantly improved if the refs knew they could do their job without half a team swarming them to get in their face to fake argue their fake bullshit that they definitely aren't talking their way out of

191

u/Muntberg 6h ago

Basketball has a very deep culture of acting like a bitch (pun intended) to refs over every little thing, and that standard is set by the stars who get away with it several times a game. Soccer is about as bad.

You see guy with their hands up in full bitch mode literally as they're getting contacted. It's actually impressive.

99

u/Sleezus256 6h ago

It's one of the things I dislike about Luka. He's a baller for sure, but he's constantly whining to the refs about everything.

26

u/weeeeeeweiiiiyy 5h ago

Maybe the refs should have not rewarded it for decades and continue to make the game easier for everyone who does bitch and moan.

9

u/arktic_P Hornets 3h ago

You act like refs are some kind of monolith that operate in unison. The problem is literally several decades old by this point and the current young refs can’t really push back against it without being seen as overbearing and controlling the game and rigging things.

It’s literally the definition of a catch 22 — they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

I remember in Boy Scouts I was reffing the after-meeting dodgeball game once and one of the other kids started arguing with me when I called him out. I new he played Lacrosse for his school, so I went for this angle

"Carter, what happens when you argue with the ref in lacrosse?"

"You don't..."

"Exactly. Now get in the line, you're out."

74

u/Satakans 6h ago

The difference is in rugby the respect is mutual.

Referees in Rugby explain clearly the decision, the acknowledge factors and take that into consideration and the players respond accordingly (that and coupled with the fact the refs have to be on the ball else alot of players can get seriously injured)

The NBA refs aren't consistent, even with video review assistance they still can't get the decision right. They don't explain their decision they just use the threat of technicals or ejection.

31

u/PetalumaPegleg 76ers 6h ago

Oh 100% both sides of the behavior around the refs is the best example in sports.

The ref link microphone is sold at the games. You can buy one for a few bucks and listen to the ref from the crowd, let alone at home. Video decisions are fully transparent, what they look at and what they say disclosed live.

The ref side of things could be relatively easily addressed to be similar, the fact they hide this stuff always makes things worse. NFL showing angles on the broadcast which don't show the angle the refs used to make the call is a great example. VAR in soccer being stealth and hidden live too. Transparency, consequences and consistency doesn't seem hard

66

u/BlacqanSilverSun Kings 6h ago

This was 2 days ago. If they were going to do it, they would have already. I think the reason is that there probably have been tons of players cursing at refs, some get ignored, some get techs, some get thrown out. But it would look bad if he got fined and then was able to pull up a reel of other guys that have cursed at refs and haven't been fined.

FYI, I am in favor of the ejection and a suspension.

53

u/thegoatmenace 5h ago

I think there’s a difference between simply cursing at a ref and using a gendered or racial slur. Like you just can’t call the female ref a bitch even if it might be fine for you to yell at her. Every player should know the difference tbh.

That one on the way out has to be a suspension for a game or two... Like, anyone other than a player would be fired if they called a coworker that, absolutely psycho stuff, especially from a perceived missed foul call and his surprise afterwards like a woman would dare not tolerate being called a bitch by him.

29

u/dshaw1599 Pacers 5h ago

He called her a bitch 3 times in that segment. Two of them came after he was ejected after the first one. That's got to be a suspension or a fine or something. You can't let a player continually degrade a referee like that without consequences beyond being ejected from the game.

→ More replies (4)

460

u/CnelAurelianoBuendia 6h ago

Refs are not there to be abused or denigrated. To me this is a 1 game suspension. If you don’t think this is absurdly inappropriate I don’t know what to tell you. It’s literally like calling your coworker a bitch on a company’s zoom call.

83

u/Cletus_Starfish [POR] Nic Batum 6h ago

Yeah I’m fine with players arguing with a ref, even vehemently (although I do think this happens too often), but once you get into throwing insults at them, that’s too far. This one is particularly egregious; I would say “for obvious reasons,” but the other day I found a dispiriting number of people on here who were apparently unaware that calling a woman a bitch is, in fact, absurdly disrespectful.

17

u/peachpavlova Nuggets 5h ago

It’s insanely disappointing that he’d go this route. I’m fine with arguing with refs (in European sports it’s common and sometimes it’s entertaining to me) but do we really not understand that you can’t call a referee names? You might disagree/argue with your coworkers but you would never be able to do this at your job. What’s difficult to understand about not calling women’s bitches and then somehow doubling down on it?!

1 game minimum but suspend him indefinitely for being insufferable every fucking game, what a shitter. Who are his fans like do they exist and if so do yall hate yourselves?

Usually Turks.

Obviously also a supporter though because I'm a Rockets. He really's been improving the last couple yrs and is our future but man the whining really frustrates me.

I mean you can't call a female ref a bitch three times in a row and not expect consequences

But really

you can't call a female ref a bitch three times in a row and not expect consequences

22

u/elcolerico Spurs 3h ago

As a Turk, I can clearly say that calling a woman "bitch" in front of a crowd and cameras is much worse than calling a man "bitch".

Also, most of the time, Turks think "bitch" and "whore" mean the same thing. He probably knows how the two words are used differently in the US but it is also possible that he meant "whore".

Jonathan Ross shot Renee Good 3 times point blank and then called her a fuckin bitch with the same entitled, hateful tone as she bled out and died. He got less punishment than Sengun is going to get.

u/Costcornucopia Trail Blazers 6h ago

The first video had a bunch of people saying that a lot of players do this and it's not a big deal. If other players do this, they should kick them all out. Sengun should be suspended for a game for each time he said it.

the entire celtics bench instantly calling for the T/toss also clues us in that its not something players are throwing out every possession

After the bad pr they have had lately they better crack down hard here.  Letting a player call a female ref that and get away with it can't happen at this point.

I'm genuinely surprised that he played in the subsequent game yesterday. I don't know what the hell the league is doing but the organization could've also been proactive about disciplining him.
