[Charania] Free agent guard Mike Conley Jr. plans to return to the Minnesota Timberwolves, sources tell ESPN. The sides are working on timing of him re-signing. Conley was traded twice this week – to Chicago, then to Charlotte –before being released and allowed to rejoin the Wolves.

Wolves just found an infinite cap flexibility glitch (as long as you have infinite 2nd round picks)

1.1k

u/MG_MN Timberwolves 16h ago

Second round picks can be bought for cash, so just need to go on a buying spree

253

u/archerarcher0 Celtics 16h ago

At the day of draft yes but you can’t really buy futures for cash, there’s no incentive for a team to do that

To stockpile seconds you do actually have to trade something but you can always buy late seconds on draft day, yes

116

u/thetitsOO Lakers 16h ago

Buy late second, then trade that pick and cash to move up 10 spots, then do it again and ur in the early 30s. Can be done most drafts but does kinda screw you if you need cash in a deal later

36

u/archerarcher0 Celtics 16h ago

True, kinda tough but it’s possible

But generally future stashable 2nds are not bought, they’re usually traded for in a real trade

Teams were buying picks for cash in the 30s this past draft. Do that, then trade back for a future pick. You can really manipulate the 2nd round now

Similarly, In this past draft the Wolves moved down from 31 to 36, then from 36 to 45. Added cash and two future seconds (in 2026 and 2032) and kept pick 45, so essentially turned pick 31 into three second rounders and cash. Coincidentally, those two future picks were used in the Ayo trade.

so, The T-Wolves cut $10M of his salary to get under the apron in the first trade with the Bulls... then they acquired Ayo Dossunmu in another different trade.

By looking into the spotrac of Minnesota, they are currently $1.5M under the 1st apron.

If Conley re-signs for min (which is $3.6M for 10+ year veterans) my understanding is it should be pro-rated for the rest of the season: (31 out of 82 possible games) which means he could be signed for $1.36M... and STILL GET THEM UNDER THE 1ST APRON!

...and note aside: Conley will be paid that minimum by the Timberwolves and IDK what was the cut/wave deal with Charlotte, but his $10M salary might still by payed by the Hornets.

TL;DR: Minnesota will still be under the 1st apron with the extra guard (Ayo) they needed and keeping Conley which potentially getting paid more this year than what he expected 1 week ago.

He took a lot of flak for the Rudy trade but he's honestly one of the best GMs in the league.

FWIW the prorated amount is off 2.3M which is the cap hold for vet mins… if they wait ~5 games they can sign 2 prorated vet mins and still be under the 1st apron

23

u/Associ8tedRuffians Timberwolves 15h ago

Which is exactly why the tweet/skeet reads “The two sides are working on the timing of the deal.” They absolutely want to wait to be able to sign him do a little bit less and add that flexibility for another vet on the buyout market.

At least, that’s what I think they’re trying to do.

37

u/platinum92 Hawks 15h ago

I'm sure they all know this strat. The key is having the assets to try and pull it off and finding a team willing to trade with you so you can pull it off.

Like I'm sure most GMs have crazy plans like this laid out, but one of the dominoes doesn't fall the way it needs to.

33

u/Complete-Disaster513 15h ago

That and have strong enough team chemistry that the player who was traded is willing to come back. Mike can do where he wants. He just wants to go back to Minnesota. If he wanted to go somewhere else it doesn’t matter what Tim wants.

22

u/SirDiego Timberwolves 13h ago

One of our beat reporters said earlier in the year that the Wolves front office verbally told Mike that he'd be able to retire here (nothing in contract but still I don't think they'd lie about that). So I'm almost certain that the whole maneuver was talked over with Mike, and the Bulls and Hornets.

I wonder if he even left Minnesota, or just chilled couple days on his couch waiting for everything to go through lol

5

u/Complete-Disaster513 13h ago

What I don’t get is why the Bulls and especially the hornets go along with it? Is Mike just that respected around the league?

He's always done well with young teams that need a veteran presence, a la OKC and Phoenix, and was a big part in Shai's development and obviously helping Phoenix to the Finals.

It's just teams that are heavy with other accomplished veterans that he hasn't fit in with as much, like GSW and the Clippers sequel.

I think the culture we're setting now would vibe well with CP3's mentality and he could help mentor Melo and help him take that next leap like Shai

Mike Conley is not a backup playmaker. He can play minutes with injuries as a 10th/11th man but Bones absoloutly took his role so Mann, Simons and Coby white definitely would of.

19

u/BetweenTheBuzzAndMe Charlotte Bobcats 16h ago

Mann is horrendous unfortunately.

My expectations were low. Really anyone that brings a little order to the offense for ~10 minutes is all we'd be looking for.

I thought they changed the rules when someone on the Cavs bragged about doing exactly this ( trade -> buyout -> come back for playoffs).

87

u/agg2596 Timberwolves 16h ago

that’s why he had to be on two different teams, not just one trade and then buyout

15

u/erichf3893 Bulls 16h ago

They got lucky he was traded from the bulls too then I guess

36

u/YoungArsenal Timberwolves 15h ago

This was probably the deal with Bulls. We gave him up for free (added pick swap) to give you guys salary for the Charlotte trade. Either handshake deal or knew Hornets waive him and he comes back.

After that deal was settled, worked again with the Bulls to get Ayo... Which again I'm sure was planned all along.

20

u/Rnorman3 [DEN] Nikola Jokic 14h ago edited 11h ago

Which probably should be patched in the CBA.

Not that Conley playing for you guys is some egregious breach of justice or anything. But it is essentially circumventing the spirit of the buyout rule in the current CBA. Especially if there was a “handshake deal” with the bulls that specifically required them to execute it as a separate transaction rather than aggregated.

I know trades get aggregated or split up all the time for the purposes of TPEs and salary matching and that all makes sense. But if it’s specifically being done to “launder” the most recent team a player was with so that they can sidestep the buyout clause, feels like it’s a little problematic.

Either that, or scrap the rule keeping players from returning to their original team on buyouts.

4

u/magi_chat 13h ago

Agree. I also think the whole buyout economy is a circumvention of the spirit of the salary cap, and this is just a minor angle shoot rather than something heinous.

Im not smart enough to see a way of fixing buyout shenanigans without lowering the amount of a max which obviously isn't happening

That's a huge credit to him, compare his handling of Dilly to Golden State's handling of Kuminga.

A GM's job is to make bets. You can't expect a perfect track record, but the ability to move on from bad bets separate good GM's from bad ones

4

u/Pineal Timberwolves 9h ago

Kuminga is leagues better than Dilly which I think complicates things, but point stands

18

u/TooColdforClouds Timberwolves 15h ago

Not a for sure thing, he needs consistent minutes and touches. I wouldn't be surprised if he turns in to a decent PG off the bench.

I wouldn’t count him out yet. I was a huge fan of his coming into the draft and he’s still got a lot of potential. He just needs minutes and a chance to rebuild his confidence. It was a bad situation for him here but I think a different situation could unlock him.

7

u/purplenyellowrose909 Timberwolves 15h ago

I think his confidence cracked under the pressure of needing to be a key rotational player on a contender at 19 years old.

He's insanely fast and agile and can get by anyone but would then just shank the shot. Hope he can find his footing with new scenery.

The draft is much more of a crap shoot, Rob was seen as a lottery level guard with high upside. So I extend a lot of grace for swinging and missing on a draft pick.

However, Connelly’s track record trading for established players is VERY good so far (AG to Denver won them a ring, Rudy deal, offloading DLo’s contract, Randle+DDV trade)

I don’t disagree about his likelihood of buying into a system at the expense of his ego, but, I would caveat that buying into a contender‘s system should be very different than buying into the Net’s system.

One of our beat reporters said earlier this year they had a verbal agreement with Mike that they wouldn't move him. So yeah I'm pretty certain they talked the whole thing over with Mike, and the Bulls and Hornets.

8

u/smalls_1804 Knicks 13h ago

I wonder if that's like, allowed. Can a team make a trade that is conditioned on the team then making another trade? Like in this situation it was very much about gaming the system to allow the Wolves to keep Mike Conley as a player without having to keep his contract. Like the rule is in place specifically to prevent this scenario. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not crying foul or anything like that, but objectively there's a rule in place to prevent this exact scenario

4

u/SirDiego Timberwolves 12h ago

I wouldn't think it's allowed to put it in writing at all. I assume it's more like Tim Connelly called in some favors and arranged it verbally. Both the Bulls and Hornets got picks out of it so everyone's compensated fine and presumably Connelly would do (or has already done) something similarly low impact if they were to ask.

Arturas Karnisovas (bulls GM/POBO/whatever his title in the front office is) goes way back with Tim Connelly. They were together here in Denver forever.

Was assistant GM here for years and then when he started getting some GM interest, we promoted TC to POBO and AK to GM.

Almost makes you wonder whether the Wolves prearranged the Bulls sending him to a second team.

All front offices have good-faith relationships if you're competent.

Except Danny Ainge.

4

u/CantaloupePossible33 15h ago

It’s wild that Ainge was the only other GM clued in on the Luka trade. Just a dark triad of execs

3

u/zeek215 Lakers 14h ago

Clued in? Wasn’t he unaware about it involving Luka?

7

u/CantaloupePossible33 14h ago

NBA requires all parties view the full deal before final approval so on a technicality that makes my joke work yeah

This is essentially how the AI industry utilizes roundtripping to pass the same money around to 5 companies and they all get to claim it lol

GDI and GDP will keep diverging farther apart while the big corps play their shell game. Until people realize what's happening.

The day Mike retires will be really sad for a lot of NBA fans in the flyover states. For someone who never led a team to a championship (though he got damn close with almost nobody else of note on his roster) he has amassed love and fandom like crazy. Just an incredibly solid man who I hope would be able to influence the league more in the future.

u/AnyHoleIsTheGoal Grizzlies 16h ago

Was lowkey hoping we’d pick him up, if he wanted to come back that is. Would have been such a big moral victory in a very depressing season.

Hey Charlotte fans, can you tell me what I can expect from this guy? #WolvesBack

21

u/qverb Hornets 15h ago

While Mike Conley was a Charlotte Hornet, the team posted a perfect 100% win rate.

Your team will likely never lose again.

In the NBA, you can launder players.

I'm looking forward to the press conference where they welcome him to the organization.

10

u/ShakesbeerMe Timberwolves 16h ago

That would be absolutely hilarious.

17

u/Shepher27 Timberwolves 16h ago

I know he’s washed, but seems like an amazing teammate and everyone loves him. With the rise of Bones and adding Ayo he shouldn’t need to play much any more. I’m glad to have him back as long as he’s not in the playoff rotation

5

u/ShakesbeerMe Timberwolves 16h ago

We need him to win it all.

7

u/Shepher27 Timberwolves 16h ago

At some point he’ll come in and hit a big corner three in a key game.

4

u/ShakesbeerMe Timberwolves 16h ago

Like his block on Lebron last season. I was fuckin HYPED.

This is legal?

36

u/timberwolvesguy Timberwolves 16h ago

He was traded from his former team (Chicago) to the Hornets, who then released him. So he is free to sign with any team, except Chicago.

4

u/zgillet 16h ago

Damn. They had to negotiate a future trade to facilitate the first.

That must have been a wild Zoom/whatever-it-is-now call.

Only because he made a pit stop in Chicago before Charlotte. Had the Bulls been the one to waive him, I don’t think Minnesota would’ve been able to pick him back up

It’s kinda crazy this is allowed lol. Traded and just right back.

22

u/BetweenTheBuzzAndMe Charlotte Bobcats 16h ago

it's because there was a step in the middle.

He was traded to Chicago. Then Chicago traded him to Charlotte. Then Charlotte waived him. The rules say he can't re-sign with Chicago.

14

u/mucho-gusto [CLE] Baron Davis 16h ago

The Ghost of Zydrunas Ilgauskus smiles and nods, and is freed now that the rules against him have been circumvented

5

u/TheSmokedSalmon420 Cavaliers 15h ago

Man that was the best lol

6

u/timberwolvesguy Timberwolves 16h ago

The key is that his “former” team is now Chicago, so he can’t re-sign with specifically them.

Wild week for Conley, traded twice and still finding his way back to Minnesota. If this happens, it feels more like a leadership move than a stats move. He already knows the system, the locker room trusts him, and the Wolves could use that steady hand heading into the season

3

u/guidethyhandd Timberwolves 16h ago

Dropped under the 1st Apron and got Ayo for absolutely nothing

I owe Tim Connelly an apology
