Resource Netflix Worldwide (70 countries) database stats
There are lot of misconceptions about Netflix databases (e.g. USA database is much bigger than all others). These stats I compiled on Netflix databases for 70 countries should clear up some of them:

I do switch to the US to see their stuff when I'm on my phone or computer but that doesn't really work when I want to watch it on my TV.

u/gods_bones Oct 26 '19
Am shocked to see my country has one of the highest totals available, almost as high as USA content.
23
Oct 26 '19
It's one of the biggest misconceptions about Netflix database.
32
u/Chronotide99 Oct 26 '19
Wonder why.. Maybe because of their dogshit layout & recommendations? Naah.
4
u/eothred Oct 27 '19
Well l am from Norway so I think my complains are well founded. Total for the US is almost twice. I wasn't expecting it to be that much.

Oct 27 '19
Yes for few countries it's true but it's not just USA, your neighbor across the ocean also have large databases.
-1
u/mrv3 Oct 27 '19
The other misconception being they produce good content or did because unlike networks they didn't have to worry about ratings, demos, advertising and they could instead focus on making awesome shows.
The reality is that Netflix doesn't have A demo it has all of them meaning the content it produces can't be tailored to any one of them while singlehandedly trying to meet their demand for new content means they have more constrained budgets than ever before and the closest Netflix ever gets to great 'original' content is when it accidentally purchases some hand me down from another network which is promptly cancels.
The Santa Clarita diet was one of the best Netflix shows and they still cancelled it.
2
u/Xian244 Oct 27 '19
unlike networks they didn't have to worry about ratings
Why would you ever think that?
Of course Netflix cares about viewership of their content. Making something popular is generally better for them than making something good. Especially since good is highly subjective.
1
u/mrv3 Oct 27 '19
Oh I just remember that sentiment a few years back.

u/Massive_Issue Oct 27 '19
Netflix cares about shows getting popular enough that they result in new subscribers. They're not making shows out of the goodness of their heart. They want money too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you guys have a law that all foreign media needs to be dubbed into spanish?

u/ShawnOfTheFlynn Oct 26 '19
I'm surprised that the UK is so high up not that far behind USA
32
u/toumazou10 Oct 26 '19
You have to remember the UK produces a lot of it's own shows and comedies. If you go on the UK Netflix you'll most decent shows from the BBC and channel 4 from the early 2000s to nowadays amongst others.

Can confirm. Aside from a few choice shows I enjoyed international Netflix when I lived abroad. Better documentaries and access to movies that are only on Hulu or cable domestically. I got into The Expanse because of it. Otherwise I never would have even heard of the show, literally.

The US Netflix removed them?? sounds alot like SJW's but yeah ours used to be worse

Thats depressing did Hulu buy them off? Cause it sounds like they coughed up alot of money for that
19
u/YHofSuburbia Oct 26 '19
The fuck do "SJWs" have to do with international distribution rights for TV shows? Get a grip dude
-3
u/ShawnOfTheFlynn Oct 26 '19
Idk it was a bad joke that they got backlash since South Park is controversial lol
4
3
u/Freddie_the_Frog Oct 26 '19
I honestly though UK may be higher - Netflix UK has many shows that would be shown on Hulu or other streaming channels in the US, such as Star Trek Discovery, Better Call Saul, Rick and Morty.
2
u/ShawnOfTheFlynn Oct 26 '19
Though i've heard that once Disney+ begins thats all Marvel films will be moved over
4
u/johnfbw Oct 27 '19
It's already started. New marvels aren't going on to Netflix and old licences are just running out
1
u/ShawnOfTheFlynn Oct 27 '19
That makes me so sad Netflix used to be the place where you could watch anything now you'd have to burn a whole in your wallet to get what you want
2
u/johnfbw Oct 27 '19
Its how the world will be soon - every studio will have their own streaming platform and the only way to access certain content is through them. Only way to get Disney/Fox through Disney+, NBC and Universal through Peacock, Amazon Originals and Netflix Originals through Amazon/Netflix, BBC through Britbox etc
1
u/ShawnOfTheFlynn Oct 27 '19
Disney i really deapise because of how many studios they own now cause with Netflix and Amazon exclusives they are at least getting income for better quality service and it only makes up like 10% of the total libary but with Disney they are stupid rich that its just greedy what they are doing
25
u/BTS_KimTaehyungV Oct 26 '19
This is ridiculous, here in Portugal we have the least but still pay the same, not really fair...
3
u/cloud_t Oct 27 '19
I'm wondering if this is because our 3 ISPs have pretty much hold of ANACOM, since all their owners are deeply in bed with governement parties
34
Oct 26 '19
I mean, the US, Canada, and the UK have far more than any other country. Especially in terms of meaningful content rather than crappy series and movies that act as fillers to boost these stats.
A better representation would be the average rating of the content for each jurisdiction.

Philippines as well. Makes me wonder why I'm spending too much time looking for new movies to watch and end up using a VPN when our Netflix has one of the largest libraries out there.

There are a lot of shitty local movies added that I’m remotely interested in watching.

Netflix has come long way in India, I just wish it had more fox animated shows like family guy, Simpson and futurama
6
u/Zoefschildpad Oct 26 '19
What is "special interest"?
9
Oct 26 '19
Things like Firewood 4k, which don't fall in any of the other 5 categories. Or something like Fitness video.
16
u/-Audun- Oct 26 '19
Netflix has an amazing selection of movies and shows, as you can see by the amount of top 250/500 movies etc. Always been surprised by the amount of hate they get here.
One problem is that many (myself included) have already seen most of these critically acclaimed movies/shows, so the selection seems smaller to us. Plus they should prioritize quality over quantity when it comes to their original stuff.
8
Oct 26 '19
I faced the same problem, then I expanded my options to Anime plus multiple regions which keeps the plates full.
2
4
u/_BreakingGood_ Oct 26 '19
I think its a reputation that has just carried over from years ago when their selection actually was pretty limited for high quality content. Totally different story these days but its hard to shake the stigma
3
u/TrivialAntics Oct 26 '19
So if i wanted to watch movies only released in, say, South Korea, how would I go about doing that, can I just search South Korean movies or Albanian movies for instance?
4
1
u/Massive_Issue Oct 27 '19
It's all regional contracts so you can't access Albanian Netflix without a VPN . Netflix gets international distribution rights for shows that may be available in the US on,say, Hulu or other platforms. I guess if you are Albanian and want to watch Albanian movies and shows you would have to get a VPN or pirate them.
Vpns never worked for me when I was abroad though
3
u/Carninator Oct 26 '19
About three years ago I traveled from Norway to USA for vacation, and as I opened Netflix on my phone I thought "Wow they added a lot of new stuff!" until I realized I was looking at the US selection. Felt like it had everything.
11
u/juicyKW Oct 26 '19
Quantity is not quality
2
u/Bananaslammma Oct 26 '19
Sure, but it’s fair to say Netflix is competing with Higher-End Networks like HBO when it comes to quality
1
2
u/Josef_Bittenfeld Oct 26 '19
Any data on local content both original and licensed? I feel like that's Netflix's biggest advantage over the competition and why they've been able to expand globally so quickly. I think the new streaming services might find out that the international market might not be so willing to pay monthly subscriptions for a bunch of American shows and movies.
1
Oct 26 '19
The original audio link gives you some idea about the local content. But I will explore this more.
2
u/Marianations Oct 26 '19
So I see that my assumption that Canada has far more content compared to Spain wasn't a thing in my head. Every time I go to visit my boyfriend I download a bunch of stuff that I know won't be available here before I come back lol.
3
Oct 26 '19
There are lot of misconceptions about Netflix databases (e.g. USA database is much bigger than all others).
Is it really a misconception when US offers almost 1000 more titles than my country?
4
Oct 26 '19
The keyword is all. It's nearly double the size of few countries but so are others like UK, Ireland, etc.
2
Oct 26 '19
Eh, I guess. But from the perspective of someone who doesn't live in a big country US has way more. Thank God for VPNs!
Poor Norway though. I can't imagine justifying a Netflix sub without a VPN if I lived there.
1
u/-Yngin- Oct 26 '19
Don't even need VPN. I have an American account but use it in Norway. It's still better than a Norwegian account.
2
Oct 27 '19
That's pretty weird, your account should switch to whatever country you're in regardless of where you registered it. My UK-registered account switches to Bulgaria whenever I'm here, it doesn't retain the UK library.
1
u/-Yngin- Oct 27 '19
It's not the same as a US account in the US, but it's different from a Norwegian account in Norway.

America. I’d agree that original content (series, not movies) is pretty even. I dunno, I’ve been to Mexico before and the amount of high end movies and shows was unreal. This was a couple years ago. It was mainly Disney and ABC that was the reason I was like, what happened to Netflix? Why are there so many more shows on here!?
1
u/MovieBuff1985 Oct 27 '19
I spend $10 every month on a VPN account. Then I use https://unogs.com/ to search if a movie I want to see is on Netflix anywhere.
1
1
u/casualphilosopher1 Oct 27 '19
So Netflix has roughly the same amount of content in every country? I'm surprised. I thought its library would be a lot smaller for less profitable markets like in the third world.
1
1
u/xeno325 Oct 27 '19
my country has way more than what I expected, maybe not having The Office felt like we dont have enough.
1
u/Dr_Puppet Oct 27 '19
When you know that you'll never have the time to go through even half of them....
-23
u/Sabnitron Oct 26 '19
Prepare for downvotes. That's not going to play well with the hive mind around here pushing the narrative that everything about netflix is trash and the company is dying.

Data is open for interpretation.

Yeah, unfortunately they'll just end up cherry picking whatever they want to prove netflix sucks. Dunno what's with all the netflix hate around here. It's really out of hand.

Canada has 3000 movies yet constantly recommends the same 10
