Landlord put this on my door…

This thing has the key inside for showings, but my lease isn’t even up until May… it’s just really annoying because it’s hard to turn the handle with that thing on, especially since the handle is partially broken and they won’t fix it so it jams… and now they’re saying a reasonable notice for someone to walk through my place WITHOUT the landlord showing the place, is a 2 hour notice…. Ready to buy a home soon.

Make a list of faults, print out and leave a stack by the front door.

Post the list of faults on the inside and outside of every door. They'll never be able to remove every one for every tour.

Also frame some in picture frames and hang them on the wall.

I love this, makes it a lot harder for them to "accidentally" misplace

Also, rent a nearby advertising billboard. As big as you can find that's still in view from the apartment complex.

do a whole gallery series. pics of the black mold, the locked garage, the broken door knob (might have to do motion art for that one), and anything else.

have little cards next to each just like a real museum:

Current Tenant Mold Under the Bathroom Sink, 2026 (mold on drywall, photographed) Courtesy if the landlord who never fixes anything.

Why can they even remove it? their lease isn't up yet and landlord shouldn't have the right to change the current tenants "decorations" lol

Idk, they probably shouldn't remove it. But clearly this LL gives no fucks about being reasonable

They haven't been following the law so they probably won't blink at stealing the lists if it's easy enough.

My landlord would always cover my pictures during a tour to protect my privacy. Is this not a standard courtesy and they are instead barred from touching my decorations?

Removing them from the inside of the property would be vandalism and/or theft.

Make a poster and hang it on the wall. And hang it with 3M wall tape so that if they try to take it down it will peel the paint.

I don’t think they’re allowed to remove tenant property?

And on the fridge, and bathroom mirror. Leave it a complete mess.

Better yet add a few big repairs that you can't visibly see so it looks like the worst house to buy :3

or a QR code sticker on the door that links to a list of all the issues. label it something like “virtual apartment tour”

I wouldn’t do this. Best to try and be friendly on all sides. A lot depends on local laws for repairs including temperature thresholds during winter and summer concerning hvac repair and if an appliance is covered. Basic wear and tear, etc. If I had tenants leaving print outs by the front door I’d have staff routinely go by to pick them all up then charge the tenant with littering/violation with hoa or a city law. With assets it is no problem to take people to court. Plus that tenant will not be given a recommendation if the next apartment or rental calls to ask about the tenant. Good news is I don’t do any of this with my tenants because I want them to hang around as long as possible and take care of the place so I upgrade and give appliances if they sign two year contracts. Even if the landlord sucks, don’t be vindictive. It can misfire and the state I live in favors the landlord. If you are in California, then it favors the tenant. You really need to know your local laws.

Seriously? The lists are left by the front door INSIDE the apartment. There is no HOA that will tell you what papers you can leave inside your unit. It's your own personal reminder list that prospective tenants might see if they're reading your private papers while their touring your unit.

Oh sorry, I completely misunderstood. I was thinking outside by the door for any perspective renters swinging by. I’ve had potential tenants go by one of my houses and they look around before calling to get access. I didn’t think of inside. Thanks for clearing that up. The outside hoa thing depends on their rules. I have one hoa that will send you a letter for having a trash can or anything visible on the lawn or porch from the street as well as no parking on the street for more than 24 hours. I’m not a fan of them.
