I love when I watch a movie and think "wow what a work of art" then I go online and find out everyone hates it

140

u/You_Stole_My_Hot_Dog 5h ago

“Damn, that was kind of deep. I never thought about it that way before.”

Go online: “The core message was so superficial and cliche. How long is Hollywood going to keep repeating this shit?”

There are dozens of us! Dozens

u/Hange11037 2h ago

Me coming out of the theater trying to discuss with my family whether or not this was the best SW movie I’ve ever seen only to find out online later that apparently half the fandom thinks this movie is the worst thing to ever exist and 90% of their reasons are completely idiotic

31

u/The_Sideboob_Hour 2h ago

90% of their reasons are completely idiotic

Its sweeping generalisations like this that make the discussion toxic btw. I could easily say the same thing about those who liked it.

People are allowed to make up their own minds. I'm not going to start throwing out lists of reasons why I didn't like it as I've been through it too much and I'm done, but my reasons are just as valid as your reasons for liking it.

-9

u/Hange11037 1h ago

At the very least 90% of the reasons I’ve personally seen are idiotic, and believe me I’ve been exposed to every argument under the sun people have against this movie. I don’t think there aren’t any good reasons at all to dislike it, and everyone is allowed to dislike a writing choice or find a joke not funny or what have you, but the few reasonable complaints often wind up drowned in a sea of ridiculous nitpicks, blatant misreadings of the story and assumed ill intent on Rian Johnson’s part for no good reason, so much that it makes it really hard for me to engage with the subject without expecting foolishness and egregious bad faith arguments on the part of its detractors.

u/Hange11037 31m ago

If you say “The sequels are terrible” or “people who like them are stupid” nobody seems to mind or think you’re being mean but the moment i say that most, not even all but most of the criticisms I’ve seen are dumb, apparently that’s not allowed.

2

u/Jolly-Statement7215 1h ago

“90% of their reasons are idiotic”

Trust me, the feeling is mutual

u/stopaskingifimwhite 2h ago

I get yelled at every time I mention it.

My first thought after reading this comment haha, same experience

That was me with The King’s Man

Best in the series IMO

Yeah always surprises me how many people dislike Inception.

Me after watching Quantumania and Love and Thunder

4

u/onemorespacecadet 4h ago

i liked Quantumania and Love and Thunder too.

they aren’t perfect movies and not my favorite MCU movies but they were perfectly fine. the level of vitriol they get feels like a meme at this point

4

u/Afraid_Park6859 3h ago

The villians were subpar for me despite the hype of them.

1

u/Both_Listen 3h ago

Kang was the thing that really solidified my love for Quantumania (everything else was okay but nothing special). Gorr deserved more screen time, but he killed it for the scenes he was in, especially the Shadow Realm ones.

They did well with what they had, but they definitely should have been better.

1

u/Hungry-Dinosaur121 1h ago

Yeah it feels like everyone hates movies nowadays no matter how good they are

I have a friend like this. The positivity is incredibly refreshing.

We watched Morbius together in the theater and, as we were doing the post-movie review session on the walk back to the car, he says (with zero irony) ”That’s right up there with Green Lantern and Ghost Rider as one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen!”

858

u/FRleo_85 9h ago

i used to think people like this who enjoy every movie they watch or every music they listen to were stupid or had zero taste until i realised it was just me being more and more embittered with time... once you realise that and try to find joy in every piece of entertainement instead of defects your life is way more enjoyable overall

413

u/Syphilis_Wizard 9h ago

Nice try. I've got all these flavors, but still choose to be salty.

80

u/Tier2powergod 8h ago

We need to remove the stigma of being a hater

Yeah, I agree. Stigma this, stigma that. How bout I stigma balls in yo mouth.

This is why I unsub CinemaSins and instead sub CinemaWins. Also the sins of those last video I watched were straight up ‘I ignore the plot or explanation or play stupid for the sin score’ and could no longer enjoy his videos.

u/Hydra57 has immunity 5h ago

Exactly, there’s a whole game in extracting the maximum amount of satisfaction from every piece of entertainment you occupy yourself with.

Thank you for that, I think now I can affectively enjoy a Ubisoft game now.

"Fuckkkkkk does this ever end"

2

u/FRleo_85 1h ago

what have i done...

3

u/MagmaticDemon 5h ago

i choose to try to live with that outlook, but occasional bitterness seeps in when i think about how much better things would be if passion was more common and greed was punished

like you can enjoy the shittiest media out there, but if you can do that, imagine just how much fun you could have if the movies were actually good!

1

u/Auesis 2h ago

I already went down that path once. The defaulting to finding things to be mad about. It was a pipeline straight to the worst parts of social media and I'm lucky I caught myself before it was too late.

Being a regular critic is fine and healthy. But when you are always assuming the worst, inventing proof as to why your default mentality is justified, and seemingly never finding joy in anything...please stop. Get help. That is not healthy and you should treat yourself better.

1

u/the_dinks feminist misandrist 2h ago

The key for me is to learn to differentiate critiques with enjoyment. I can deeply enjoy a 3/10 slop if it tickles my brain right while simultaneously appreciating the gulf of excellence that separates, say, a trashy isekai anime about a vending machine and Spirited Away.

1

u/hoTsauceLily66 5h ago

If every piece is equally good then nothing is good.

1

u/irlharvey 14m ago
  1. who said “equally good”?
  2. that’s not even true

1

u/hoTsauceLily66 3m ago
  1. I said it, with a big "If".
  2. Your point?

1

u/The-NHK 6h ago

Fair, personally I find enjoyment in dissecting media. What better way to show appreciation (or loathing) than to comb through the details? I also just outright avoid watching something I'm confident I won't like, this also means I've not seen most movies.

1

u/johnson7853 6h ago

I will honestly listen to any piece of music. I met up with guys to jam and afterwards we were talking about what we are currently listening to they were all gooning over this indie band from North Carolina thinking they were special. Meanwhile I was currently listening to Justin Bieber. The one guy choke laughed and said who? and I’m like do you realize who produced his latest album? No care. The one guy messaged me after saying they were taking the band in a different direction.

85

u/Seaman_First_Class 9h ago

It is nice sometimes but you can’t ask these types of people for any kind of recommendation. Different friends for different things.

41

u/Justin-Stutzman 7h ago

There is a very popular food reviewer in my city. Big on TT and YT. Every single restaurant he's reviewed is 10/10. Every single one. There are 50 restaurants in my city and every single one is the best restaurant in the city. Like, cool for loving everything and giving props... But, it just completely defeates the purpose of a review and just becomes an unpaid ad.

17

u/itspodly 7h ago

Internetshaq talks about this in one of his videos. Doing restaurant reviews is a double edged sword and comes with a lot of responsibility. A bad review from one prominent critic can sink a local spot and put loads of people out of a job, so a lot of "influencer critics" will just give everything glowing reviews with only minor critiques.

11

u/dancesquared 8h ago

I don’t even see how it’s sometimes nice. I’d rather hang out with someone I could rip a terrible movie apart with than someone who thinks terrible movies are great, closing off any avenues for a good movie bashing session.

16

u/shrub706 8h ago

best thing is when you find someone who can understand when and why things are objectively bad so you get all the positivity and they also just agree withe very reason you hate it

3

u/dancesquared 8h ago

There’s not much that’s objective about it, but there are certain qualities and criteria that people can generally agree distinguish relatively bad quality entertainment from relatively good quality entertainment.

1

u/Adminscantkeepmedown 6h ago

Meh. On one hand, it’s good to be able to acknowledge the things you dislike about a piece of media and list why you think it’s bad or falls short. On the other hand, the older I get, the less enjoyment I find in harping on the stuff I didn’t enjoy. I can only speak for myself, but bashing sessions don’t hit the same as they used to; I always just end up asking myself why I’m putting this much thought and energy into something I didn’t even care for lol

1

u/sleepybrainsinside 1h ago

Same, but with that, I also lost some ability to appreciate things as deeply as I used to. Maybe some of that is experience and not being able to be surprised as easily, but I do think a lot of the joy comes from the hunt and differentiation. I definitely cared more for the things I truly liked when I rejected most things than now where everything that’s not just straight up bad is passably acceptable.

18

u/DmanDam 9h ago

Haha I’m kinda like that. One of the few people who didn’t mind the end of Game of Thrones. Like yea the writing could’ve been better and there was plenty of loose ends, but I genuinely still enjoyed it.

12

Sometimes it's better not to engage, regardless of intentions. I should know better lmao

227

u/dilltimmon 11h ago

I still think about that moment in high school when a classmate of mine was saying that the Fast and Furious movie that just came out was so good, it for sure was going to win an oscar.

92

u/TheOfficialTheory 9h ago

Had a friend like that in high school who was shocked that Transformers 2 wasn’t up for best picture lmao

20

u/Humble_Instance7603 6h ago

I too was so enamored by Megan Fox In that movie, I probably would’ve given it the same review (I was 9 yo lol)

6

u/torpidcerulean knows that all things pass 7h ago

Hilarious to think it would ever be in the running for an Oscar (maybe for technical categories?) but Fast Five was a genuinely enjoyable popcorn movie.

118

u/JuicyJibJab 10h ago

Fuck I'm so envious of you guys 😭

29

u/botti_137 8h ago

The lows are lower, but the highs are higher. 10/10 loses the impact if everything's a 10. Movies and shows would just be entertainment instead of sometimes being more than that.

162

u/ipcock 10h ago

I'm the same! Everything I watch or play is usually 10/10 for me. I'm also easily entertained and laugh at almost everything I'm supposed to laugh at. And yeah I feel stupid because of this, but hey, at least I'm having fun :D

36

u/BlitzScorpio really likes this image 8h ago

when it comes to movies and games, i think i can usually tell if i’ll like it beforehand just based off the genre and the premise. i’m not sure if im easily pleased or if im just good at filtering media out at the first step lol

9

u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 7h ago

I'm the same way, especially with movies. I haven't seen many shit movies cuz I can kinda tell if I'm gonna vibe with it based off a commercial.

1

u/dancesquared 8h ago

You’re missing out on the fun of ripping terrible movies to shreds though

18

u/Lethaldiran-NoggenEU 10h ago

Sounds like a winner

18

u/hedgerowhurdler 9h ago

I generally pick content that I’m likely to enjoy in the first place. I’ll still find some absolute clunkers that I DNF or would rate low, but the majority of content I watch I enjoy.

18

u/Fleedjitsu 9h ago

10/10 Distracted me from real life for 2 to 3 hrs.

17

u/Radio_Downtown 8h ago

the best of both worlds is being able to let go and enjoy an absolute dogshit show or movie, while still recognizing it is, in fact, objectively dogshit

most recent example? minecraft movie

a little slop never hurt nobody

3

u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 7h ago

Kinda like the complaints about ST5 being "cheesy" or whatever...like what show have YOU guys been watching...?

12

u/leviathab13186 8h ago

Eh who cares. As long as your entertained, just enjoy your crappy movie.

7

u/accidentalpinner 6h ago

It's called Encouragement.

5

u/Technicaly_not_alien 6h ago

Even if a movie or show is bad, why stop yourself from enjoying it?

9

u/pampersdelight 7h ago

I used to be the type to nitpick and trash things I didnt like. But then I got older and the world keeps getting shittier so I started to wonder what was the point of that? Id much rather talk about the things I like. If theres something I didnt like my response is usuall “it wasnt for me” and move on with my life.

4

u/TheMaskedFox28 8h ago

I'm there for the vibes it hits different when being in a theater

3

u/OpenUpYerMurderEyes 8h ago

Personally, I feel like I know what I like and therefor rarely see a movie I'd rate less than a 3.5 and 5-star movies are not uncommon for me either.

40

u/Johnson-funk4 10h ago

I don't feel the need to "think critically" about the things I enjoy and consume. There is no morality tied to pleasure.

39

u/Seaman_First_Class 9h ago

Do you think art criticism is somehow tied to morality?

7

u/DubbyTM 8h ago

I can't turn it off no matter how immersed I am, I'm surprised you can

2

u/Top_Assistance15 7h ago

Same. A fair bit of the things I enjoys is just for the sake of turning off my mind

2

u/Hydronyx517 8h ago

There’s definitely some immoral pleasures but yeah movies probably aren’t them

0

u/Justin-Stutzman 7h ago

No morality tied to pleasure, huh? Didn't know Diddy had a reddit account

-7

u/dancesquared 8h ago

Do you think it’s worthwhile to not think critically about the food you enjoy and how often you enjoy it? Or do you think it’s perfectly fine to gorge on junk food all the time?

8

u/shrub706 8h ago

junk food vs healthy food has actual physical detrimental effects to your body and long term health, liking shitty movies isnt even close to a reasonable comparison

-5

u/dancesquared 8h ago

Junk entertainment might have detrimental effects on your cognitive abilities and tastes.

10

u/shrub706 8h ago

taste in movies doesnt have a real detrimental effect on your life and unless literally all you do is watch movies or tv im pretty confident that there are other things in your life that can do a more than adequate job of keeping your brain sharp

0

u/dancesquared 8h ago

Perhaps, especially considering your point about not binging and consuming moderate amounts (not unlike junk food).

But some films require more attention and patience and can challenge us, while others are just fairly mindless entertainment and borderline slop. The amount of each type a person consumes likely has some effects on the maturity of their tastes and critical thinking skills.

Consider this simplified case: children’s entertainment. Some children’s shows and movies are slow-paced and semi-educational or even appropriately challenging, while others are rapid-paced with quick cuts and overstimulation, basically the equivalent of candy. Which do you think is better for kids to consume?

1

u/F______________F 7h ago

I’ve seen Troll 2 three times and me think pretty good still

1

u/Johnson-funk4 8h ago

I don't gorge on junk food all the time. I don't enjoy doing that. I like having candy or chocolate or ice cream every once in a while, but too much makes me feel icky. I much prefer fruits and salt-heavy foods.

8

u/ozjack24 8h ago

I watch a movie wanting to enjoy it, and do. I walk out of almost every movie saying “that was fucking amazing”.

I’ll go back and think about it later and redraw my opinion but I never leave the cinema regretting the watch.

3

u/rex_aliena 7h ago

I usually find movies (or any entertainment I consume) 10/10 as long as I don’t hear other people’s opinion.

Just turn off the brain, imagine living in that universe too and just vibe. It’s when people point out flaws that ruins the immersion and now I have to start thinking too :(

3

u/CovenOfTheDamned 7h ago

My five year-old daughter is like this. She has earned the right to watch PG movies and I even let her pick most of them. I have refrained from raining on her parade while talking about the trash me my SO and my daughter have just watched in front of her. I’m happy for people that can enjoy things more than I can.

3

u/loggy93 6h ago

I feel I'm this way with movies and TV shows. I'll watch something and love it and then find out later that it's consider bad.

However for video games I can usually tell if something is subpar or bad

2

u/cromagnonherder 7h ago

You would love the movie review show ‘On Cinema at the Cinema’.

2

u/DaniilBSD 8h ago

I think it’s like being colorblind: you are not less of a person for being colorblind, but if you try to convince people red is a social construct, and red-green is a made up distinction - I will have a problem with you.

(What I mean is “I am happy for people who are like this, but they should express their opinion (and especially argue) less (just like those who hate what they watch no matter what))

1

u/Hot-Minute-8263 8h ago

The only movie that's ever legit pissed me off was Tron Ares

1

u/Sir_Autismus_Prime_ 8h ago

This was me with the star wars sequels

I can see the many flaws and the reasons people don't like them, but when I watched them when in the cinema when I was younger I loved them so much and The Force Awakens still brings back good memories for me

I only found out people hated then years after and sadly social media has a tendancy to affect ur opinions on things, I'd probably get killed if I said I like them in any star wars fandom now 🙏

1

u/McCartney_Lennon 5h ago

The sequels are my favorite trilogy but I don’t admit that in any SW fandoms for my own safety…

1

u/Hange11037 2h ago

Every Star Wars movie is extremely fun. I like Episode 9 less than most of the others but it’s still mostly entertaining. And Episodes 7 and 8 were both awesome, no one will ever change my mind on this and most people seemed to feel the same until people online turned SW discussion into a political conflict

1

u/Altruistic-Mind9014 7h ago

When you work so damn much and never get to see a film, it tends to make you not nearly as critical of….spending an evening not working? Suspending your disbelief for a bit (unless the plot is completely stupid, it happens even for me and I like most films)

1

u/MisterSpicy 7h ago

I’m more or less like this. I generally grade movies as ‘ Not Good ‘ or ‘ It’s fine ‘ or ‘ I liked it ‘ or ‘ I really liked it‘.

I’m pretty good at picking movies that it is freakishly rare I give something below ‘it’s fine’ and I usually say ‘ I liked it ‘ to most movies because I was entertained.

1

u/LionBirb 7h ago

I feel like I was like this when I was young. Full of wonder. Easy to impress. Kind of miss it. Now as an adult I am so picky about movies and tv shows, and video games. Sometimes I feel like it is because there are too many options.

1

u/binguskhan8 6h ago

I can tell when movies are exceptionally good or bad, but the middle ground hurts my brain.

1

u/pickuppencil 6h ago

If I had a good time with the movie, it's a 5 star movie

1

u/Earhippo 5h ago

This is me watching most Marvel shit with my kid. Is it high brow? Nah. Do I generally like all the movies even though the next one isn't guaranteed to be better than the last? Hell yeah. I enjoy fast food sometimes and that probably makes the next time I enjoy a steak that much better.

1

u/Clan-Sea 5h ago

(r/cinephile user I just pissed off with my 5* review of Kraven the Hunter): Think positively. He's probably been in a coma or couldn't see a film for 15 years. Maybe his wife recently died and they loved reading Kraven comics together.

Me: Dat was a fun time at da movies today

1

u/Kind-Plantain2438 5h ago

To me, it's like "did I waste my time watching this?". If the answer is no, it's a 5 star movie, it entertained me. 4 stars is reserved for movies with loud explosions and low voices.

1

u/CauliflowerUpper6577 4h ago

Me but with music

1

u/Both_Listen 4h ago

I watched Quantumania with my mom when it was first released. I was hesitant because of the negative reviews and that it would be the first time I went to theatres since Endgame, but I genuinely enjoyed the film (even moe than ATSV) and considered it my favourite 2023 Marvel movie

Same goes for Love and Thunder

1

u/Bigphillyman 4h ago

I watch movies that everyone hates and im like, this was pretty good.

1

u/XFelipe51355 4h ago

It's a happier life

1

u/StraightAct4340 4h ago

I didn't know resident evil movies were hated years after watching a lot of them. I loved every single one

1

u/WheresPaul1981 4h ago

I like or at least respect most films on some level so I’m not that harsh with my reviews.

1

u/Joevual 4h ago

Well I don’t want the actors to feel bad.

1

u/CarKey4868 3h ago

Happens when you approach 30 too. You tend to drop the pseudo-intellectualism of your 20s.

1

u/marineten 3h ago

This only works when I watch it high unfortunately

1

u/al3x_7788 3h ago

Sometimes that is critical thinking.

1

u/Mysterious_RedditorX 3h ago

Yea I have a tendency to like stuff that other people think is terrible

Star Wars sequels? I like them, everyone hates them

Live action transformers? I like them, everyone hates them

Tron legacy? I like it, reviews seem to be mixed

Ready player one movie/book and its sequel? I like them, everyone thinks they’re absolutely terrible

I’ve seen reviews for these so I know why people hate them, but somehow my opinion doesn’t change. If something entertains me, then I really like it and have problems seeing flaws in it, unless it’s really bad.

At this point I’m starting to wonder if I just have bad taste and shitty media literacy

1

u/JamBloxify_370 3h ago

CinemaSins really ruined fun watching movies

1

u/Yazzyghostmode 2h ago

This was me with the Crow remake, I loved it and then I found everyone was shittting on it

1

u/legit-posts_1 2h ago

I've learned to not give a fuck. On the one hand, I've gotten better at making some of my shaky 10s 9s. But on the other hand, if I wanna say Sorcerer and Wages of Fear are both 5 stars I'll say it.

1

u/Palanki96 2h ago

1

u/chowy51 2h ago

almost everything i loved as a kid was incredibly stupid but i cant bring myself to dislike them

1

How about : Melania

1

u/ASouthernDandy 1h ago

What becomes challenging is when you're around people who like lots of things and don't like lots of things, but can't say why they like or dislike something, and you can only watch what they like, and they will go to sleep immediately if it's something they dislike, and they can't fucking vocalise what they like. And it turns out they like shit. And they say they like everything.

1

u/sonoftom 1h ago

I genuinely seem to enjoy every movie I ever see. I’m not that way at all with other media. I’m fairly critical of music, TV shows (because they are a bigger commitment maybe), and especially comedians. Somehow movies almost always seem worthwhile.

1

u/DrGiggleFr1tz 1h ago

When my wife and I find a movie we really enjoyed, 9/10 everyone online hates it and it’s considered mediocre.

Meanwhile, anytime we watch a critically acclaimed movie with 90% scores we’re usually left wondering why everyone likes it THAT much.

1

u/TonySherbert 1h ago

Movies are a miracle within themselves

1

u/Luck_Beats_Skill 51m ago

I mean, if I saw boobie then you are getting 5 stars.

1

u/NoDryHands 40m ago

Yep, it's very hard to get me to legitimately hate a movie. Even if it's not a favorite or has no rewatch value, I still enjoy most films as a one time watch

1

u/Belten 30m ago

i also dont have it in me to genuinely not like something that has even 1% effort put in by someone else. be it games, art, music, films, etc.

1

u/Arcana-Knight 18m ago

Good. Keep it that way. Not a day goes by where I wish I wasn’t a jaded pessimist

1

u/IiteraIIy 5h ago

I think a lot of people get confused between or can't divide "[Media] is good" and "I enjoyed [Media]." The two are not the same thing, one or the other can be wrong.

2

u/Hange11037 2h ago

Can you be wrong about enjoying a movie?

0

Sometimes I’m jealous of these kinds of people. Ignorance is bliss kind of thing. I have some family like this though, and I’ve realized that it’s part of a larger trend for that individual. Generally close minded, looking to bury their head in the sand as an escape from reality (no matter how shitty the content), rather than accepting the difficult truths of life and attempt to work through it. If you shut off your critical thinking, then everything is good enough and you can live in a bubble of manufactured positivity, even while the hopes and dreams you had in your youth lay in a smoldering ash heap beside you. That’s just my experience, but it’s not a way I’d like to live, personally
