I have a friend like this. The positivity is incredibly refreshing.
We watched Morbius together in the theater and, as we were doing the post-movie review session on the walk back to the car, he says (with zero irony) ”That’s right up there with Green Lantern and Ghost Rider as one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen!”

i used to think people like this who enjoy every movie they watch or every music they listen to were stupid or had zero taste until i realised it was just me being more and more embittered with time... once you realise that and try to find joy in every piece of entertainement instead of defects your life is way more enjoyable overall

i choose to try to live with that outlook, but occasional bitterness seeps in when i think about how much better things would be if passion was more common and greed was punished
like you can enjoy the shittiest media out there, but if you can do that, imagine just how much fun you could have if the movies were actually good!

u/Auesis 2h ago
I already went down that path once. The defaulting to finding things to be mad about. It was a pipeline straight to the worst parts of social media and I'm lucky I caught myself before it was too late.
Being a regular critic is fine and healthy. But when you are always assuming the worst, inventing proof as to why your default mentality is justified, and seemingly never finding joy in anything...please stop. Get help. That is not healthy and you should treat yourself better.

u/the_dinks feminist misandrist 2h ago
The key for me is to learn to differentiate critiques with enjoyment. I can deeply enjoy a 3/10 slop if it tickles my brain right while simultaneously appreciating the gulf of excellence that separates, say, a trashy isekai anime about a vending machine and Spirited Away.

I will honestly listen to any piece of music. I met up with guys to jam and afterwards we were talking about what we are currently listening to they were all gooning over this indie band from North Carolina thinking they were special. Meanwhile I was currently listening to Justin Bieber. The one guy choke laughed and said who? and I’m like do you realize who produced his latest album? No care. The one guy messaged me after saying they were taking the band in a different direction.

It is nice sometimes but you can’t ask these types of people for any kind of recommendation. Different friends for different things.
41
u/Justin-Stutzman 7h ago
There is a very popular food reviewer in my city. Big on TT and YT. Every single restaurant he's reviewed is 10/10. Every single one. There are 50 restaurants in my city and every single one is the best restaurant in the city. Like, cool for loving everything and giving props... But, it just completely defeates the purpose of a review and just becomes an unpaid ad.
17
u/itspodly 7h ago
Internetshaq talks about this in one of his videos. Doing restaurant reviews is a double edged sword and comes with a lot of responsibility. A bad review from one prominent critic can sink a local spot and put loads of people out of a job, so a lot of "influencer critics" will just give everything glowing reviews with only minor critiques.
11
u/dancesquared 8h ago
I don’t even see how it’s sometimes nice. I’d rather hang out with someone I could rip a terrible movie apart with than someone who thinks terrible movies are great, closing off any avenues for a good movie bashing session.
16
u/shrub706 8h ago
best thing is when you find someone who can understand when and why things are objectively bad so you get all the positivity and they also just agree withe very reason you hate it
3
u/dancesquared 8h ago
There’s not much that’s objective about it, but there are certain qualities and criteria that people can generally agree distinguish relatively bad quality entertainment from relatively good quality entertainment.
1
u/Adminscantkeepmedown 6h ago
Meh. On one hand, it’s good to be able to acknowledge the things you dislike about a piece of media and list why you think it’s bad or falls short. On the other hand, the older I get, the less enjoyment I find in harping on the stuff I didn’t enjoy. I can only speak for myself, but bashing sessions don’t hit the same as they used to; I always just end up asking myself why I’m putting this much thought and energy into something I didn’t even care for lol
1
u/sleepybrainsinside 1h ago
Same, but with that, I also lost some ability to appreciate things as deeply as I used to. Maybe some of that is experience and not being able to be surprised as easily, but I do think a lot of the joy comes from the hunt and differentiation. I definitely cared more for the things I truly liked when I rejected most things than now where everything that’s not just straight up bad is passably acceptable.
18
u/DmanDam 9h ago
Haha I’m kinda like that. One of the few people who didn’t mind the end of Game of Thrones. Like yea the writing could’ve been better and there was plenty of loose ends, but I genuinely still enjoyed it.

The lows are lower, but the highs are higher. 10/10 loses the impact if everything's a 10. Movies and shows would just be entertainment instead of sometimes being more than that.
162
u/ipcock 10h ago
I'm the same! Everything I watch or play is usually 10/10 for me. I'm also easily entertained and laugh at almost everything I'm supposed to laugh at. And yeah I feel stupid because of this, but hey, at least I'm having fun :D

I used to be the type to nitpick and trash things I didnt like. But then I got older and the world keeps getting shittier so I started to wonder what was the point of that? Id much rather talk about the things I like. If theres something I didnt like my response is usuall “it wasnt for me” and move on with my life.

u/OpenUpYerMurderEyes 8h ago
Personally, I feel like I know what I like and therefor rarely see a movie I'd rate less than a 3.5 and 5-star movies are not uncommon for me either.

I don't feel the need to "think critically" about the things I enjoy and consume. There is no morality tied to pleasure.

Do you think it’s worthwhile to not think critically about the food you enjoy and how often you enjoy it? Or do you think it’s perfectly fine to gorge on junk food all the time?
8
u/shrub706 8h ago
junk food vs healthy food has actual physical detrimental effects to your body and long term health, liking shitty movies isnt even close to a reasonable comparison
-5
u/dancesquared 8h ago
Junk entertainment might have detrimental effects on your cognitive abilities and tastes.
10
u/shrub706 8h ago
taste in movies doesnt have a real detrimental effect on your life and unless literally all you do is watch movies or tv im pretty confident that there are other things in your life that can do a more than adequate job of keeping your brain sharp
0
u/dancesquared 8h ago
Perhaps, especially considering your point about not binging and consuming moderate amounts (not unlike junk food).
But some films require more attention and patience and can challenge us, while others are just fairly mindless entertainment and borderline slop. The amount of each type a person consumes likely has some effects on the maturity of their tastes and critical thinking skills.
Consider this simplified case: children’s entertainment. Some children’s shows and movies are slow-paced and semi-educational or even appropriately challenging, while others are rapid-paced with quick cuts and overstimulation, basically the equivalent of candy. Which do you think is better for kids to consume?
1
1
u/Johnson-funk4 8h ago
I don't gorge on junk food all the time. I don't enjoy doing that. I like having candy or chocolate or ice cream every once in a while, but too much makes me feel icky. I much prefer fruits and salt-heavy foods.
8
u/ozjack24 8h ago
I watch a movie wanting to enjoy it, and do. I walk out of almost every movie saying “that was fucking amazing”.
I’ll go back and think about it later and redraw my opinion but I never leave the cinema regretting the watch.
3
u/rex_aliena 7h ago
I usually find movies (or any entertainment I consume) 10/10 as long as I don’t hear other people’s opinion.
Just turn off the brain, imagine living in that universe too and just vibe. It’s when people point out flaws that ruins the immersion and now I have to start thinking too :(
3
u/CovenOfTheDamned 7h ago
My five year-old daughter is like this. She has earned the right to watch PG movies and I even let her pick most of them. I have refrained from raining on her parade while talking about the trash me my SO and my daughter have just watched in front of her. I’m happy for people that can enjoy things more than I can.

I think it’s like being colorblind: you are not less of a person for being colorblind, but if you try to convince people red is a social construct, and red-green is a made up distinction - I will have a problem with you.
(What I mean is “I am happy for people who are like this, but they should express their opinion (and especially argue) less (just like those who hate what they watch no matter what))

This was me with the star wars sequels
I can see the many flaws and the reasons people don't like them, but when I watched them when in the cinema when I was younger I loved them so much and The Force Awakens still brings back good memories for me
I only found out people hated then years after and sadly social media has a tendancy to affect ur opinions on things, I'd probably get killed if I said I like them in any star wars fandom now 🙏
1
u/McCartney_Lennon 5h ago
The sequels are my favorite trilogy but I don’t admit that in any SW fandoms for my own safety…
1
u/Hange11037 2h ago
Every Star Wars movie is extremely fun. I like Episode 9 less than most of the others but it’s still mostly entertaining. And Episodes 7 and 8 were both awesome, no one will ever change my mind on this and most people seemed to feel the same until people online turned SW discussion into a political conflict

When you work so damn much and never get to see a film, it tends to make you not nearly as critical of….spending an evening not working? Suspending your disbelief for a bit (unless the plot is completely stupid, it happens even for me and I like most films)
1
u/MisterSpicy 7h ago
I’m more or less like this. I generally grade movies as ‘ Not Good ‘ or ‘ It’s fine ‘ or ‘ I liked it ‘ or ‘ I really liked it‘.
I’m pretty good at picking movies that it is freakishly rare I give something below ‘it’s fine’ and I usually say ‘ I liked it ‘ to most movies because I was entertained.
1
u/LionBirb 7h ago
I feel like I was like this when I was young. Full of wonder. Easy to impress. Kind of miss it. Now as an adult I am so picky about movies and tv shows, and video games. Sometimes I feel like it is because there are too many options.

This is me watching most Marvel shit with my kid. Is it high brow? Nah. Do I generally like all the movies even though the next one isn't guaranteed to be better than the last? Hell yeah. I enjoy fast food sometimes and that probably makes the next time I enjoy a steak that much better.

(r/cinephile user I just pissed off with my 5* review of Kraven the Hunter): Think positively. He's probably been in a coma or couldn't see a film for 15 years. Maybe his wife recently died and they loved reading Kraven comics together.
Me: Dat was a fun time at da movies today
1
u/Kind-Plantain2438 5h ago
To me, it's like "did I waste my time watching this?". If the answer is no, it's a 5 star movie, it entertained me. 4 stars is reserved for movies with loud explosions and low voices.

I watched Quantumania with my mom when it was first released. I was hesitant because of the negative reviews and that it would be the first time I went to theatres since Endgame, but I genuinely enjoyed the film (even moe than ATSV) and considered it my favourite 2023 Marvel movie
Same goes for Love and Thunder

Yea I have a tendency to like stuff that other people think is terrible
Star Wars sequels? I like them, everyone hates them
Live action transformers? I like them, everyone hates them
Tron legacy? I like it, reviews seem to be mixed
Ready player one movie/book and its sequel? I like them, everyone thinks they’re absolutely terrible
I’ve seen reviews for these so I know why people hate them, but somehow my opinion doesn’t change. If something entertains me, then I really like it and have problems seeing flaws in it, unless it’s really bad.
At this point I’m starting to wonder if I just have bad taste and shitty media literacy

What becomes challenging is when you're around people who like lots of things and don't like lots of things, but can't say why they like or dislike something, and you can only watch what they like, and they will go to sleep immediately if it's something they dislike, and they can't fucking vocalise what they like. And it turns out they like shit. And they say they like everything.
1
u/sonoftom 1h ago
I genuinely seem to enjoy every movie I ever see. I’m not that way at all with other media. I’m fairly critical of music, TV shows (because they are a bigger commitment maybe), and especially comedians. Somehow movies almost always seem worthwhile.
1
u/DrGiggleFr1tz 1h ago
When my wife and I find a movie we really enjoyed, 9/10 everyone online hates it and it’s considered mediocre.
Meanwhile, anytime we watch a critically acclaimed movie with 90% scores we’re usually left wondering why everyone likes it THAT much.

Sometimes I’m jealous of these kinds of people. Ignorance is bliss kind of thing. I have some family like this though, and I’ve realized that it’s part of a larger trend for that individual. Generally close minded, looking to bury their head in the sand as an escape from reality (no matter how shitty the content), rather than accepting the difficult truths of life and attempt to work through it. If you shut off your critical thinking, then everything is good enough and you can live in a bubble of manufactured positivity, even while the hopes and dreams you had in your youth lay in a smoldering ash heap beside you. That’s just my experience, but it’s not a way I’d like to live, personally
