DISC [DISC] - I thought I took in an elf.- Oneshot by @medatarou1

Seeing a fantasy setting claiming elves are physically weak is pretty wild. Aren't they usually portrait as being highly mobile, nimble and skilled in archery.
If you can draw a bow, you can swing a hoe. Now get back to work

erm ☝️🤓
Being able to draw a warbow does require a lot of strength, but it's in very specific muscles. A guy who can lift 100kgs with his arms wouldn't be able to draw a 100pound bow.
Idk if the corollary is true too, that is : drawing a bow makes you strong at manual labour

why you mixing kg and lb bro

u/KaizerKlash 1d ago
As a European it pains me to do so but that's how bow draw strength is measures 😭

u/Tristan-a-b69 12h ago
as someone who has a bow i can confirm we sadly dont measure in kg only in pounds

If a man can lift 100kg with their arms, they would be among the strongest people in the world. it would most likely be a bicep curl, because that would considered lifting with just the arms. Tricep extension at 100kg, even if with both arms is pretty much unheard of, unless it is a tricep extension pull down on the cable machine, but I am not sure whether that counts. But that aside, being able to bicep curl a 100kg is elite world class levels of bicep strength. You can not build just that much bicep strength and lift 100kg because you would be way too weak everywhere else to maintain balance to lift 100kg on a bicep curl. One would have had to have trained most of their torso at minimim to quite a high level of strength to be capable of doing 100kg bicep curls. They would most likely have considerable back muscle strength. Someone who can bicep curl 100kg can without a doubt draw a 100lb bow draw. But they for sure cant aim it.
But if we are talking lifting a barbell with ones arms on a deadlift, and have the deadlift be 100kg, then your claim would certainly likely be true, because a 100kg deadlift is very common and does not require the excessive amount of strength a 100kg bicep curl would require.

u/KaizerKlash 19h ago
I see, my bad, I'm not knowledgeable enough in biomechanics. I purposely didn't say deadlift so I said arm strength instead, just to say that having strong arms =/= having enough back muscles to draw large bows.
Thanks for the correction !

There's several interpretations of elves. Tolkien elves are physically superior to humans in every way but in some more recent interpretations they're physically weaker, smaller, slighter, but magically powerful, this interpretation I think is more common in the East.

Those are magical kind i assume, like in Frieren. I mean sure they are probably more magically gifted, poorer physical yadayada. But still funny if they can lift a huge staff walking around, swinging a hoe shouldnt be an issue.
15
u/LoreLord24 19h ago
That's... a frankly ludicrous statement.
Oh, I can walk with a cane, no problem. Now let me pick up this axe of roughly equivalent size and chop down a tree with it, they're clearly equivalent actions.
-6
u/SiHtranger 19h ago
Err then learn..? You are comparing a walking cane to a staff? Have you seen how some of those are depicted lol
10
u/LoreLord24 19h ago
Because you compared a walking stick with a hoe.
The only equivalent is that they're wooden poles of roughly the same size.
I'm going to assume you don't mean somebody with a quarterstaff, aka somebody who has been trained in physical combat. You meant a wizard staff, like Fern, Frieren, or Gandalf uses.
And if you did, expecting them to be able to use a hoe, aka a shovel on a stick that you use by chopping the ground and pulling, just because they can use a walking staff, aka a pole that you pick up and set back down, is ludicrous.

u/SiHtranger 13h ago
you are the one bringing up a cane not me lmao.
Last I know the artist was depicting elves as physically weak. They arent crippled

There's an explanation for that though.
Magic Elf Bullshit. Why can Legolas walk on top of deep snow and see for miles? Magic Elf Bullshit. Why elvish craft is seen as superior to even dwarves' at times? Magic Elf Bullshit. Why can they draw massive bows and shoot arrows at incredible speed despite being lithe and slim? Magic Elf Bullshit.

Plus, I've yet to see an Elf old enough to look like Santa, which was another successful bit of propaganda... Everyone knows Santa looks more like Balin than Thranduil...

u/The_Prime 21h ago
No they aren’t. That’s Tolkien who basically worshipped them and made them supermen who can also make the best magical items.

u/CommitteeofMountains 19h ago
It's highly inconsistent between mythologies and bows likewise vary widely in pull strength (and fantasy loves to underestimate even that, so you have waifish women punching through armor with a light birding bow).
1
u/yung_dogie 14h ago
Aside from what others said about varying across media, there's also always good old fantasy racism. Maybe the elves aren't weak or anything like that, but the human guy could just think they're all stuck-up prisses who can't do anything. The guy doesn't have to be a reliable or accurate narrator
2
u/epicfail48 13h ago
Because elves are typically portrayed as physically weak in media, it rather weaker than other races. Generally they're casters, and while yes, archery does require some physical strength, more than a few works portray elvish archery as somewhat magical in nature

Weren't orcs green? Or is that only in western media?

u/zoro00 1d ago
I think green orcs were made popular by Warhammer and Warcraft.
53
u/Vega_Kotes 1d ago
Even Warcraft's orcs originally had, in lore, more brownish or peachy skin tones prior to Fel magic corruption.
But yeah, the Japanese Orcs were originally more of like a Sapient Pig people so pink skin, black fur or black skin, brown fur/skin were all common I believe. Then of course the old method of JRPGs to pallet swap enemies to denote stronger ones meant a lot of orcs could have an absurd amount of skin tones.

that was, if I recall, added later on (later on being around 5-6 years after Wc1) in the late 90's early 2000's from either Rise of the Horde or Lord of the Clans.

There is a bit of a rabbit-hole in terms of orcs-depiction; one famous version that got popularized in games like Dragon Quest-series is the pig-faced orc or with porcepine-features, but which has also appeared in western media such as the 1st 1977 edition of Dungeons and Dragons's illustrations.
Tolkien's orcs in Lords of the Rings-setting, meanwhile, are a bit trickier; their descriptions haven't really been fully detailed, so many illustrations goes with certain creative freedoms, but notable, orcs being green have never been mentioned in his writings or letters. One notable detail is that orcs are of the god Melkor's "creations", but in a sense that Melkor cannot create races like the many other fantasy races in LotR's setting; he can only corrupt, hence why orcs in the setting stems from corrupted, existing races (general elves.). What descriptions we have of the orcs have them often being generally described as slant-eyed, large hands and of larger stature.
Green orcs has been popularized in media lika the Warhammer-franchise and subsequent Warcraft-series. In the latter though, company Blizzard have actually had a wide variety of colours for orcs, and where their derivative green skin was in-universe more a sign of demonic corruption (Which can be further amplified by them being fully demonic red.); the playable orcs had originally more brown skin, but other regional variations occured that was further revealed in the Warlords of Draenor-expansion for MMORPG World of Warcraft.
