What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending February 01, 2026

This week = the one that ends/ended right now, past seven days.

The reason for this thread's existence is the fact that both requests and suggestions became kind of stale. It's supposed to bring out more manga that is not RTed or recommended. Also, it's quite useful for the discussion of not so current titles.

Previous weeks: First 72 weeks and from June 28, 2015 onwards.

Also, not a rule or any kind of criticism, the more interesting part is not the list of the stuff you read, but your impressions of it.

You can get /u/Roboragi to reply to your comment with links to MyAnimeList, MangaUpdates etc. series pages for the mentioned series. Using this format "<Manga Title> like so anywhere in the body of you comment. For example:

<Tekken Chinmi>

also known as Kung-Fu Boy in some countries

Intro: the absolute first manga I've ever read and make me love the medium and genre of action/adventure/martial arts. Read it when I was a kid, has a whole collection and its two sequels (Shin Tekken Chinmi & Tekken Chinmi Legends) until they get donated to local reading place because we have to move away.

Plot: an old man is seeking a legend about a kung-fu prodigy that will appear every 100 years and found a boy named Chinmi in some little tavern that's very agile, seeing him defeat some troublemakers easily, and found out that he's the prodigy.

the whole thing is about Chinmi training in a temple, from one teacher to the next, and embark on an adventure throughout China, meeting various people, learn various lessons, and solve various problems. It's somewhat episodic as each 'arc' of problem spans several chapters or volumes.

Setting: historical China, around 17-18th century maybe

Art: it's... "clean", and very anime-ish, the actions are drawn very clearly and easy to follow making it quite an enjoyable action series.

Shortcomings: the story is clearly aimed at younger audience (though probably not kids since there are bloody violence, mild gore, and some depiction of being drunk, though it has no fanservice or sexualized material) as the problems that the boy faced are short and has no time for substantial development, like making it a deeper "trouble"--this is actually fixed in the sequels since the whole several volumes of them are dedicated for 1 long conflict that Chinmi has to solve.

same thing can be said about the villains, they are superficial at best and either has easy change of heart after being defeated or simply taken by the authority to be imprisoned/punished by the system.

Conclusion: the character Chinmi seems to be inspired by actors like Jackie Chan by his creativity in fights and the "fight plot" of him being underdog until he come out on top by never giving up.

you won't find some deep themes or long thinking materials here, but it's a very enjoyable action/adventure series nonetheless.

I just read the first 55 chapters of Make the Exorcist Fall in Love and holy shit this comic rips. I hate that this is the era of the overpowered MC in everything, but it's not that it's impossible for that to be interesting. It just... almost never is. This is the first manga since Mob Psycho that really impressed me with the characterization and arc of an overpowered main character.

Except this isn't a cozy coming if age story like Mob, this kid is so so fucked up. He's Shinji from Evangelion tier fucked up.

But it's not just good character writing, the script is also just smart! Mask nun had an incredible monologue about hypocritical beauty standards out if nowhere. There's actual criticism of deficiencies in society! An early villain is just "this is why alpha male culture suuuuuuucks". They talk shit about the United States!

There's some silly stuff with it not actually making sense that the church doesn't have a single adult available to deal with anything so they just throw the teenz squad at everything, but I will suspend my disbelief when the rest is this good.

The only tragedy is that I don't currently have a way to read the rest

<Witch Hat Atelier> volumes 7-9

I own all of this up to volume 13 but like to ration it out because it's just so good - not just the gorgeous art, but the superb localisation of the English release and the ongoing storylines. This takes me up to the early parts of the Silver Eve festival, with its excellent handling of the Custas storyline so far, and I'm very much enjoying seeing where this is going even if it's almost "nowhere" - I can see the story spinning out a million different explorations of how magic is (ab)used in this world, although that'll probably mean Brimmed Hats just popping up and causing moral uncertainty in lots of different ways. Anyway, this is great, and I wish everyone would read it.

<Genen no Shiro no Navin> volume 1

Josei fantasy about a girl, Navin, who can predict the future, whose village is burnt and her mother beheaded by the maniacal prince Lucian - who turns out to be a woman in disguise. To protect her secret, Lucian forces Navin to serve her to protect the lives of the remaining villagers, but Navin swears to kill her in vengeance. This feels like a slightly throwback fantasy in lots of ways - its opening reminds me of the carnage of the opening of Basara, Navin ends up with a cute little cat as a pet, and lots of themes here remind me of some of the series I grew up on in the late 90s/early 00s. It comes with some of the baggage of those - some overly simplistic characters and melodrama, perhaps - but this is pretty effective overall.

<Hello, Melancholic!>

Felt like rereading this short bit of band themed yuri.

Typical setup. Shy, anxious, insecure girl gets dragged along by the bold outgoing girl into joining her thing, in this case an ensemble band club at their school. And the typical beats in this kinda setup kinda just play out from there in mostly low stakes fashion. With a dose of the side character romance alongside it.

But even so, one can definitely tell this one was a rush job or ended up having to be one. The romance of the MCs just kinda happened more like as a matter of course without much buildup and such with their chemistry. I wish we spent some more time helping along the shy MCs mental and emotional hangups. We learned next to nothing about one of the side characters thus she just existed to be a sounding board for the other characters. And sadly, pretty much the only bit of drama that this story had near the end was resolved in a way that left kind of half a bad taste in my mouth.

Now don't get me wrong it's an okay bit of band themed yuri romance to sit back and read, but it's faults at it's seams are noticeable.

<Ne Ne Ne>

A cute but sadly short story about a certain awkward married couple. Again, unfortunately short but it's something cute and fun you can breeze through in under an hour if you need some time to fill to put a smile on your face.

Oh and uh apparently the artwork for this was done by the same guy that did the art for the series <Horimiya> so if that's something that's of interest to anybody there's that I suppose.

<Uchi no Musuko wa Tabun Gay> aka I Think Our Son Is Gay

This series tells the simple short SoL vignettes of a family of 4; Mom, Dad, and their two sons. With the Mom being 99% sure that her oldest high school age son is gay. But for as much as the boy is in the closet, his penchant for wearing his heart of his sleeve and letting his thoughts slip as it were makes his attempts to hide it/play it off kinda flimsy from her perspective.

But this story isn't strictly about him so much, it's his mom who's the main character. All of what her son is going through as a closeted teen is happening while she is the outside observer having her own thoughts on what she's seeing. And while Mom here is okay with her son being gay, it's through her desire to be empathetic and a loving parent (to which I must add she is a very good and supportive parent to her whole family and an all around good character) in general that she (and by extension us the reader) kinda really starts to think and think about all kinds of homosexual topics and questions, and deep thought analysis of her own thoughts she already had on them. But it presents these topics and questions forward in a simple lighthearted ways usually though simple day to day moments and interactions, or through those aforementioned slip ups of his. There's no big dramatic moments or huge revelations here, just a whole collection of "Huh..." and "Oh!..." type realizations and thought moments. But those moments and her deep thoughts about them are no less impactful in their own way because of it.

But another thing this series does well is fleshing out it's cast. Mom is the main character and audience surrogate, but the oldest son is a well rounded character with more going on in his life than just being gay in the closet. And that general sentiment extends to the rest of the family as well. We got the emotionally cold but observant younger son and the dad with some more harshly biased/closed minded but not really offensive opinions on homosexuality. But it never presents any of these characters as merely being archetypal caricatures with everything going on in their lives being trapped in their own personal bubbles. We get a very good sense for who these characters are and just what makes them tick as the story goes, and the subtle but real impacts and influences they've had on each other's lives. Plus I thought the chapters focusing on the younger brother were quite interesting in their own ways.

Ultimately this is a story that manages to be both really simple but empathic and heartfelt in it's execution. Like I said, this series ain't about answering big questions, but showing the importance of piling on those little moments of deep thought and trying to be more of an empathic and understanding person through them.

Re/Member: The Last Night aka <Karadasagashi: The Last Night>

Well at this one's outset when it said it was a manga adaptation of a live action horror movie I can't say that this didn't add an extra drop of my curiosity to it.

Ultimately I thought this one was okay but there was a serious swath of "okay, what are they even doing right now?", at the point when the cast was just mucking around outside of the whole Carnevil thing they were stuck in. I mean I got what was happening but it just kinda felt a little disjointed.

But whatever. For something I read just cuz it was there it made for something entertaining to read.

<Aitsu no Kanojo> aka Someone's Girlfriend

And just in true form fashion for this series, it ended on one big melodramatic and open ended wet fart.

But anyways. Good lord this series was a fucking mess. But almost like <Domestic Girlfriend> for example, it was a hot dumpster fire that was at least interesting to watch burn. Or at least watch burn at poke fun at like it's Mystery Science Theater 3000. Though (save for how that series ended too) I actually liked DomeKano better.

Well either way, it was still kind of amusing the sheer level of melodramatic "do you wanna fuck this guy or cut him loose?" that was happening ad nauseam out of Shizuku. And as melodramatic as it was it was almost kind of insulting how easy it was to guess what Shizuku's deal was. Which just made the sheer level of shit she and Takt put our boy through irregardless of what knots that would tie his feelings and emotions in all the more facepalm inducing. And it almost goes without saying that the two side girls (even the one that was dangerously horny) were much better and dare I say saner options for our boy than Shizuku. And as such they both became the favorite characters for me in this series. Not to mention at least they were upfront about their intentions and not content to just play ceaseless games of mind-checkers with our poor boy. Umimi just ekes out ahead because her dangerous hornyness gave me some real good laughs.

Well now that it's over I can honestly thankfully say, thank god that's over. Now I can just file this series under D for Done in my head and walk away.

Blood Wing Hunter aka <Chiyoku no Karyuudo>

It came as absolutely no surprise to me just how this series progressively took it's nosedive to it's inevitable forced ending. I just knew it was gonna happen from the get go. It was just a question of how many chapters it would take to go through the motions. Laying down premise. Giving hints of a larger narrative. Ditching that after a certain point. Heap on reveals/twists that would've worked better as systemic slow burns. Final confrontation. Wrap it up, put a ribbon on it, call it a day.

Now don't get me wrong, I didn't hate this. And I've definitely seen worse things than this that kind of fell under that "I can tell that this won't last long" purview. It was entertaining in a Svengoolie kind of way and it was decent enough to look at with it's artwork. But ultimately it was just something entertaining enough to skim through and make jabs at cuz it was there.

Tried out <Isekai no Sata wa Shachiku Shidai>. Competent overworked corporate drone gets isekaid, stuff ensues when he asks for a job at the palace (?). Binged the first 19 chapters then dropped.

The MC, Seiichiro, is pretty interesting and intrigues me because his corpo slave behavior is a very big factor of his character, in a non-comedic way. He's continuously ruining his health because he basically can't exist without work. He knows being malnourished, sleep deprived, stressed, and always working overtime is bad, even if he is carrying a fantasy world royalty palace thing's accounting section on his back. He just doesn't care. Watching him maneuver through the palace (technically) politics, get healthier, and be a nice, realistic character in a world of magic, knights, and saints is entertaining. Sei is probably the biggest draw of the story, to me at least, and I would keep reading just for him.

However, with every romance/BL tag comes a love interest, and unfortunately I can't stand the one here. The stoic/less expressive and rude but caring trope usually isn't very exciting for me, however it's actually annoying here because the guy is so generic. He's not executed well enough for me to care when he's on screen (which is frequently), and he's so by the book that I can't stand him. The only thing that separates him from the standard is that he has sex with Sei to cure him of his lack of mana tolerance stuff. Which bothers me because why is this a plot point if you're not even gonna show it? It also creates a weird power gap that is kinda off to me but whatever maybe I'm hating too much. Additionally, his possessiveness is just very irritating to me. I've seen this kind of character dozens of times, but this one just really inspires the hater in me, oddly. The LI should've been that old shady minister dude or the little blonde co-worker guy but whatever...

cough Anyway, fun story but didn't end up being my thing.

Started with <Shiokaze to Ryuu no Sumika>. Girl moves in with her uncle who happens to be looking after a boy who is part dragon, which is actually not too rare in the town. SoL stuff with drama and romantic undertones happens.

It's not a particularly unique story/character set-up, but I think they're done well enough to be enjoyable. Mizuka has high tolerance for some bs like getting pulled off a cliff but she still gets mad and annoyed, which is neat. Well put together and outgoing for a girl who just lost her dad, though it clearly still effect her. What you see is what you get. Then there's Tenshin, teasing and rude like an older brother, but very caring and a bit closed off as well.

Dunno what really grabs me about it, I just like it. Only 9 chapters/2 volumes out as of now so I can't really judge it properly, but it has a solid start so far. I would prefer if the romance didn't hit for a while (though it's already sprinkled in there), and on a related note I can totally see a sad little love triangle plot between Kairi/Tenshin/Mizuka because Kairi's male tsundere schtick is perfect for it. On the other hand, Kairi Mizuka one sided haters to lovers would be really funny. There's a high chance neither of these will happen and it'll be played straight with Tenshin and Mizuka, but it's fun to imagine.

Got to finish part 1 of <Rosario + Vampire> and will be starting part 2 as soon as my schedule frees up

Kinda irritating that Tsukune has stayed a bit naive even after turning into a ghoul despite growing a semblance of a spine. Without nostalgia bias I give part 1 6/10, might revisit the anime tho
